In this video, I discuss 10 key ideas from The Bilingual Edge by Kendall King and Alison Mackey. This book is packed with research-backed ideas for raising bilingual children made accessible by these two Georgetown University professors. I focus on chapter 6, "How can you best promote language learning at home?" but the entire book is great and I recommend checking it out! #bilingualkids #bilingualchildren

"As non-native speakers especially, you don't have to know everything all upfront." The perfectionist in me needs to hear this over and over and over.

Yes! We don't have to be perfect, just better than our children (for now) and, when the time comes, we have to know how to find them resources they need to keep growing. Thanks for watching!

Thank you very much for this video! We speak 3 languages at home, but this video encouraged me to become active in engaging with my children in my husband's language which I am studying to enable our children to have more language exposure. It doesn't have to be perfect! I also ask my 3 yo to teach me how to say things in the language and we review words together in everyday situations.

Leena, thanks for watching. I love your attitude! It reminds me of something I read from the Our mL Home blog where Amy mentioned how she stepped in to support her husband's ml of Spanish by reading to her kids sometimes in the language, even though they use OPOL and she provides all the English language input. Your situation displays two important factors--flexibility and fun! Keep it up!

Hi Stephanie, that's a great video! I have published a book together with Ana Elisa Miranda, called "The Toolbox for Multilingual Families" where we share 123 activities and games to do with 0 to 15+ year olds in the target language(s). The communication, the connection is very important indeed, like you mention in this video, as well as the motivation (of the parent and the child!).

Ute, thank you so much for watching. I'm a big fan 😃! Thank you also for sharing your book. I took a look at the preview and I've never seen a book with so many practical suggestions for raising bilingual kids. This goes well beyond the common advice of "just speak." Fantastic!

Hi Stephanie ! I find super interesting your comment on reading aloud. I do it a lot with English but I sure need to do it with our third language from now on. I smiled at your anecdote about the dad counting in Spanish when going up and down the stairs. We picked brushing teeth moment to count in the third language. It may seem ridiculous as indeed it is difficult to pronounce when brushing teeth but in our case the idea was that my son finds it difficult to pronounce words in Russian but it makes him laugh to do it with the tooth brush in his mouth. So I thought it was a fun way of giving him confidence and developing his pronunciation. Thanks for this really great video. I really learned a lot and I m sure it ll help me expose my son more to this third language. Thanks again for sharing your precious knowledge and research with us 🙏🙏🙏

I have read a good number of books about raising multilingual children, but not this one. Unfortunately the library only has a kindle version, so I will have to order one to get the physical copy.

This is such an encouraging video! I have started to learn French this year and I think its always assumed that you can only do the OPOL with a native speaker in the house. I don't have children yet but I have always wished that I could speak to them in French and your videos have been so encouraging. I am obviously at the very beginning of my language learning journey but its so nice to think that there isn't so much pressure of learning it all and speaking it perfectly before having children, if anything how lovely is it to think of learning it together ☺️ thank you so much for this video! ❤️

Amy, thank you so much for watching! I'm glad this video was encouraging to you! There are lots of parents out there raising bilingual kids who don't speak the language themselves or as not what they would describe as "fluent" (see Chocolate Sushi Roll's KZbin channel for how she raises her kids in Japanese, for example). They do rely a lot on outside support, but hearing the language at home, regardless of the level goes a long way for kids. Plus, you already have a head start because you're learning now and already know you want to raise them this way. You have all the tools you need! Good luck!

Thanks for watching and I hope you like the book! It's not specifically for those raising kids as non-native speakers, but it has lots of great information from well-respected professors in the field presented in a really easy-to-understand way,
