My teacher is... well... I’ll let my complaints speak. For the current piece: 1. Plays too fast before we even learned the piece 2. Jumps in without practice so we constantly sound a mess 3. Made the 3rd and 4th violins switch to 2nd and 3rd parts 6 WEEKS after we started learning the previous violin parts 4. Didn’t even slow down the tempo to give us time to learn our new parts 5. Rarely plays with the rest of the orchestra, only firsts 6. Neglects our poor viola 7. Separates parts by skill. Obviously firsts have harder parts so they need to be more skilled, but the people who aren’t particularly good at their instruments are all put together so we can’t learn from each other and that part gets drowned out. At least put one skilled person in every part😭

The emotion and the feeling of accomplishment through the pain, hardship and dedication to practice for days on end to achieve a certain level of competence so as to be able to participate in the creation of sound and color from a world never before seen or heard. Okay I genuinely greatly disliked classical music for the longest time. I just thought it didn't have as much soul or emotion as jazz, it sounded 'strict' if that makes any sense. But after 1 week of discovering and binge watching twoset, it's definitely growing on me. I can confidently say, I would love to go see an orchestra live some day :)

There's tons of emotion, but IMO it might be more noticeable in the old-school classical recordings of, say, Fritz Kreisler :)
@andrewbarrett1537

Sometime in the 1940s-1970s(????) classical playing changed and musicians' whole approaches seem to have changed vs the old recordings of the late romantics. However, romanticism has made somewhat of a comeback (starting in the 1980s?) and so there are probably more classical musicians playing somewhat like the musicians of 100 years ago, today, active, than there were say in the 1970s. Actually, they should do a video about this :)
@gianellab.4953
@gianellab.4953 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe it was the type of classical music you listened too? For instance, I realized very young that the more contemporary type of classical music is just not for me. I don't know the terms well (my violonist friend told me but I forgot haha), but that kind of classical music can be more experimental and less melodious or pleasing to the ears. What you say makes sense to me, though. I have always felt that not all classical pieces hit emotionally (or at least, not to the same degree). Part of it is the performing for sure, as Andrew said, but I also think part of it may be the composition.

As an animator, I'm very interested in movement that have curved arcs. And I must say, I was taken aback by your bow strokes. I thought it would be boxy and strait lines. But it was hypnotic and beautifully curved. Eddy was expressive while Brett was more refined. Don't know if that is a good thing when it comes playing the violin, but from my perspective it was very interesting. Will probably do an animation study on you both in the future. So look forward to that, lol.

I don’t even play violin but it was fascinating and sincewatching it I’m very aware of how elbow and wrist move to control the bow, and the SHAPE the arm and elbow makes.. Interesting. I'm a violinist and my daughter has a degree in traditional animation. I don't think she's ever noticed my bow stroke. I'll have to ask her lol. As far as being expressive or refined, in some ways, it matters what type of music you're playing (Baroque as opposed to Romantic, etc.) or if it's the melody or harmony, which can often be the 1st or 2nd violin part.

Have you watched that orchestra episode of Tom and Jerry. I thought the animation of the synchronized bowing was mesmerizing, even tho it's probably simple or generic to an animator's perspective (maybe? I'm not an animator, so...) It's different when you such precise, decisive and graceful bowing up close like in twoset videos, isn't it.

The ironic thing is that most professional violinists can probably play the opening of Don Juan in their sleep given the amount of time they have spent practising it for audition excerpts.

I didn’t realize how much I really needed to see this video. Just got the news that my volunteer orchestra will not be needing woodwinds, only strings, for the season. It was the only musical group of mine that was even thinking of trying to rehearse. I completely understand, of course. You can play strings with a mask on, not clarinet. I was just so looking forward to being slightly uplifted by playing together. TwoSet comment section is the only place I can complain where people would understand just how very sad such news is. Keep posting, gents! I truly appreciate you all. Edit 5Oct2020- You are all absolute darlings. It’s so dreadfully late (or early) in my part of the world and here I am sniffling and crying onto my phone. You know these things can’t get damp. You are all so sweet to respond so to me. Thanks you ever so! To fantasticfungi, I will be looking into the virtual orchestra. With the world as random as it is, I do hope I’m able to participate. Thank you again, you guys, truly. I’ve got to go find a handkerchief or a tissue, or something.

I'm feeling you! My volunteer community orchestra canceled our in person season, and will instead only be doing a few of those virtual mash-up recordings for the year-end holidays to "stay on people's radars". I'm worried that there are so many elderly folks in our orchestra, we might not come back for a long time :( If you're looking for interesting virtual projects though, might I suggest SociallyDistantOrchestra? I emailed the director to join on a whim, and the programming has been excellent thus far. Check us out! kzbin.infovideos In the meantime. Hang in there!

Watching this really reminded me how much I miss going to concerts and being able to see the musicians perform. It really adds to the experience if you're able to see how they feel the music and how it, quite literally, moves them. Honestly I could watch Brett and Eddy perform like this for hours on end. They don't just play the music, they feel it, live it and let it become part of them. Really fascinating and beautiful to watch.

But I would really love to see them attempt some of the viola parts to those pieces, or other common viola audition excerpts... Don Juan is tough enough on a violin, try playing it on a 17+" viola. I immediately recognized the Shosty 5 as we performed it as our unspoken golden piece during our concert last year. Have you guys ever considered trying to come down to Juilliard in NY? I think it'd be awesome for you guys to come visit, not only because of your talent, but to show young musicians like myself how to bring classical music to social media. Anyways, I love your guys' channel and It'd be awesome to see you guys on the campus at some point in the future! Keep up the good work :D
