Once a year between October and December, the arrival of about 10 million fruit bats takes place in Kasanka National Park in northern Zambia after having migrated for thousands of kilometres. This incredible spectacle is known as the world's largest aerial mammal migration. It is also the world's biggest overall migration as it involves more individuals than the famous wildebeest migration across the Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya.
Kasanka is a small and rugged park. The fruit bats emerge at dusk - you can watch and hear them flying overhead from simple elevated platforms. The spend the night feeding, returning to their roosts at dawn to spend the day sleeping. This is another wonderful time to watch them, especially as the sun rises over another beautiful day in Zambia.
