Reimagining Dahl’s beloved story for a modern audience, Robert Zemeckis’s visually innovative film tells the darkly humorous and heartwarming tale of a young orphaned boy who, in late 1967, goes to live with his loving Grandma in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks our young hero away to an opulent seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world’s Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe-undercover-to carry out her nefarious plans.
The film stars Oscar winners Anne Hathaway (“Les Misérable,” “Ocean’s 8”) and Octavia Spencer (“The Help,” “The Shape of Water”), Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games” films, “The Lovely Bones”), with Kristin Chenoweth (TV’s “Glee” and “BoJack Horseman”) and award-winning comedy legend Chris Rock. Newcomer Jahzir Kadeem Bruno (TV’s “Atlanta”) also stars, alongside Codie-Lei Eastick (“Holmes & Watson”).
Based on the book by Roald Dahl, the screenplay is by Robert Zemeckis & Kenya Barris (TV’s “black-ish,” “Shaft”) and Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”). Zemeckis is also producing, alongside Jack Rapke, del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Luke Kelly. Serving as executive producers are Jacqueline Levine, Marianne Jenkins, Michael Siegel, Gideon Simeloff and Cate Adams.
Zemeckis’s behind-the-scenes team includes his frequent collaborators, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”), production designer Gary Freeman, editors Jeremiah O’Driscoll and Ryan Chan, Oscar-nominated costume designer Joanna Johnston (“Allied,” “Lincoln”), and Oscar-nominated composer Alan Silvestri (“Polar Express,” “Forrest Gump”).

She doesn't blow smoke up his arse, establishing thier emotional relationship. Good writing and great directing. I I had not listened to all the silly fuss, I should have seen this.

As much as I didn't really like the film itself, I still had fun watching it and watching Anne play a psycho villain. Also thought she looked amazing especially her meeting dress and the dinner dress.

@@slytherinmember1009 Honestly it was kinda hard getting passed the bad CGI and the bad acting from a few of the actors but overall, I still enjoyed watching Anne Hathaway even though I felt like the other witches didn't really show much admiration towards her character unlike the witches from the 1990 movie.

If it was Tim Burton who directed the movie, maybe a remake could have worked. Because while the first film is a classic, it didn't live up to the ending which this remake did - one of the few things I have to give it credit for.

@@foxteen8721 Did you know he specifically made sure the screenwriter for *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory* was someone who never saw *Willy Wonka* and went off of Roald Dahl's tale? And Felicity doubled down on it. They should have done the same thing here. As much as it keeps the effects of their magic potent and permanent, it goes off track with almost everything else. Yet this is the movie to have the author's name in the title.

@@TheNotverysocial Very interesting trivia there. Someone who has not seen the film but knows the story, very wise so not to take advantage of something else. I think the strongest issue of this adaptation is that everything is rushed, the meeting for instance. The Grand High Witch makes her complaint about seeing children in the hotel, makes her mouse plan short and sweet and we cut straight to Bruno coming to claim his "chocolate". What also fails is the lack of tensity, like how the Grand High Witch smells Luke even before the meeting begins. The suspenseful tensity is lost.

@@foxteen8721 There are a number of problems with this movie, and Chris Rock's narration, as others pointed out is near the top of the list. That voice works for something outwardly comical like *Osmosis Jones.* It's less suitable for a much more somber story like this one. And that's far from the only thing to make this look like a farce. The witches are capable of doing a vast range of things in the original, while in this film they overrely on offering potion spiked sweets to potential victims. This is their main plan in any version of this, but this one lays it on so heavily, even the bedtime story tale goes into it, while the original had the child banished into another dimension by unknown means. Kristin Chenoweth even states this outright and kicks herself for being an idiot. Sending them off to another plain of existence would prevent any retaliation from those particular victims.

Chris Rock's narration is too silly for this story. They could've gone with a more suitable, more calm voice. It feels like he's performing a stand up comedy. If I were a child, I wouldn't believe his words, even if a talking mouse was talking to me. When I was a kid, I really loved the book and I hoped to meet a witch one day to make a deal, she and her fellow witches can do anything they want with my school bullies, and in return they should spare me and my friends, which, back when I was little, did not had many. I was the one who was picked on by the whole school. Also, I always loved everything that was about witches, so they would most likely spare one kid.

Ooooohhh - can’t wait. I wasn’t overly keen on the first movie. Bit corny for me. Am hopeful 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 this delightful looking version exceeds expectations. Only downside to trailers, is that they are akin to being allowed to lick the mixing bowl of the left over cake mix : tastes great, gets you excited, but it doesn’t really compare to the final result (which can go either way). I hope 🤞🏻 this will prove better any bowl of over cake batter. 🧑‍🍳🍰 mmmmm cake
