The infamous "pillow hands" (similar to Strickland and some others), dude don't have enough "torque" in his punches and even when he does use his core to punch correctly with full force, he still couldn't knock out Whitaker (who has a weak chin himself). It's funny because Alex Pereira posted footage of his training camp with Strickland, he demonstrated the correct way of punching by using the weight/shoulder movement, still, even if Strickland lands one of those, he will not have enough power anyway, you either born with heavy hands or not

Doesn’t need to set it up as much he just blasts it because the check hook forces southpaws only 1 direction away from costa’s pressure. Issue is there’s not a whole lot of southpaws at middleweight. Costa is still dangerous but without easy access to his best weapons his offense really struggles to land. It showed in the whittaker and adesanya fights he struggles to get the pressure going effectively. At least with strickland if he can get past the jab and front kick he can get some offense going

After the Izzy defeat he lost something… he used to charge forward, corner his opponent against the cage using forward movement and cutting angles, and then unload on them with vicious kickboxing until he overwhelmed them for a TKO victory. Since the Izzy loss, he trades a lot more now, he’s more hesitant and allows fights to be back and forth. He doesn’t have that same aggressiveness and fearlessness.

Ever since the Izzy fight he's fighting only top 5 competition - except for Rockhold, who is unsurprisingly his only win since - so it's no surprise he's not as aggressive. He'll get countered and KO'd blitzing in on these fighters at the top of the food chain. That's what happened to him against Izzy and that's probably why he changed his game up. He was able to overwhelm lower level competition with his size and power. He wasn't fighting dangerous sniper counter punchers like Izzy. He just looked really good against weaker competition.

@asr448 Ok, I'll do analysis: Costa doesn't have an ability to adjust his game plan to fight against certain styles. He can't fight off the back foot and he's not a good counter puncher. His cardio is severely lacking, especially for 5 rounds, probably because he's got a bodybuilder's physique and is carrying too much mass. He just doesn't have the tools to beat the best at 185, and he is too small to move up to 205 but too big to move down to 170 so he's in a tough spot. He'll probably be relegated to being a gatekeeper at 185 for the rest of his career.

He's so fast and explosive. But he always gets tired. It would be awesome if he could improve his cardio, but I don't really think it's possible. The better strategy would be to just pace himself. If you can win the round with 10 strikes. Then do that. No need to throw 30. It's gonna be a 10-9 round regardless unless he nearly stops the fight, but it's risky to use all that energy.
