I'm assuming there is a clear line between people who love this game and those who don't get it. And that line is age, if you didn't grow up playing the Genesis game, you won't appreciate the funky grooves of TJ&E.
@markokabra8 жыл бұрын
The 90's aesthetic is probably also lost on the younger crowd. Anyone expecting ToeJam and Earl 3 is probably also taken aback by the top down isometric style (which I hugely prefer). I hope all the naysayers give it a chance.
@MrNateMinier8 жыл бұрын
The first TJ&E is one of my favorite games of all time. Every TJ&E game afterwards has been utterly forgettable. Panic was decent, but I don't really dig platformers myself. I know the creators had to deal with publisher interference, but I wonder if they didn't creatively plateau with the first game. Back in the Groove looks awful to me so far. The music and sound effects are like torture. The line between those who like this and those who don't is not age. While some people might be happy just to see TJ&E again, others are looking at the total package. And the total package here looks like it fell of the back of a truck, screaming in agony.
@shimmy19848 жыл бұрын
Wrong. I love the first two games. Especially the first one, played it coop loads and still rate it as one of my fav games of all time. However I think this looks bad, going with this art style which looks like it would only just cut it for concept art and the 2d cutouts on he 3D terrain just looks terrible. Look at the box art for the first game for comparison. Then imagine that in full 3D, which is quite possible with game engines of today, unity included. Now that would have been the Toejam and Earl game I've been waiting for. Infact this current style reminds me of early/mid 2000's flash games :-/

I grew up playing both of the Genesis games, and this just feels weird to me. The graphics in general look straight out of a 2002 flash game, and as others have said, the animations such as the walk cycle, just look strange. For a game with 500k funding, it looks really cheap.

I'm officially thrilled for this now! I still love the original on SEGA Genesis and I have to say, this looks and sounds awesome so far. I like the music that they are using here and the artwork and animation definitely scream 1990's. It appears to be based mostly on the first game with some elements from Panic On Funkotron thrown in as well, a great idea for a modern TJ & E remake. I hope this turns out as good as it seems.

As much as I love Toe Jam & Earl, I'd have LOVED to have seen this remake depict Earth as actually LOOKING like Earth; a round planet with countries on top of water and NOT as a collection of islands stacked on top of each other floating in space accessible by way of elevators

The original is what makes me love this so much, but I just don't like the overall look of this. The 90s cartoon feel is fkn awesome but I hate that the world is some 3D Pixar looking terrain. Having it all look cartoony would even make that close up view (4:33) look more interesting, not that I understand that at all. Gah.. I want to like this more.

Suggestions: This is a FANTASTIC start, but it needs changes. Graphics/Audio: (1) "no-butt-crack-mode" should be an option. (2) Either rebalance the audio or have audio controls. (3) Hyper Funk Zone needs to be improved, it looks like an early beta of it, maybe the area under the blue ground, can be shaded with a very faint translucent light blue (if you don't want () solid), so represent the "ground" that was present in TJ&E2, if you refuse to do that, then at least make the blue/yellow lines you run on have a slightly translucent background, so that it creates higher contrast so you can tell what is the ground and what is everything else easier. (4) inconsistent 2D with 3D looks bad and confusing. Pick an art style and stick with that theme. If not, it breaks immersion. Animations: (1) Earl looks like he is floating/sliding, I think his walking animation needs to be sped up and sometimes his shoes go through the ground. (2) I think after entering the elevator, the animation of is disappearing should include more sounds and animations. Also, the transportation scene should be animated more, it looks horrible and choppy. (3) I think it needs more "arcade action" stuff, like over-the-top flashy effects, because the world seems too lifeless. (4) Maybe add footstep/tire trails or smoke/dirt puffs behind while moving. (5) The "presents" menu looks too choppy/restrained, maybe have them tilt farther left and right in the animation. PROS/PRAISE: (1) The contrast is okay. (2) The colors are okay. (3) ship piece adding/prize animation is okay. (4) Player Stats and MiniMap are okay. Please be aware that I own both TJ&E games and I'm very familiar with the games. I listen to TJ&E2 music while I get ready for work every morning! I "want to" want to buy this game, so I want it to be a huge success, not just a "I want to like the game, so I'll buy it anyway" while people who don't know the game, will have no interest. To make this a game that fans will love and new people will enjoy, you have to make some changes, like the ones I listed. I know this video came out 17 months before this comment and many (unknown to me) changes have been made, but this is the first full (non-clips) gameplay video I've seen of this game, so regardless I want to express my opinions ASAP because of the potential release this year on Steam.

wow everything you mentioned is spot on for me. looking at the quality of the animations on the genesis vs this, these look very incomplete. i can understand the choice to go in this direction with the art style due to budget restraints thou. at the start i had issues with the art style but i supported the kickstarter anyway and i'm glad that it went through. even if this game isn't totally polished but gets finished to the best of their ability i am still happy to support it.

The 2d sprites in a 3d environment can work very well. Reference Don't Starve and Party Harder. I think the big issue with the art at this state of the TJ&E build is the way the sprites are animated. And that they take up SO MUCH of the screen. They look better when you zoom out to the further setting. This Earl sprite is like, twice as big as a Don't Starve character sprite, and like 10x the size as a party harder sprite.

@JojoMonReturns918 жыл бұрын
I have been ignoring those haters lately since most people can't enjoy a game without bawing into a full hurricane of hatred, sadness, and ignorance. READ THIS! And for those that say this game, Toejam and Earl Back in the Groove, is a full fledged remake, let me remind you what is a remake and what isn't a remake and what isn't. Remember Ducktales Remastered? You know, the game that got a 4.0 out of 10 at Gamespot (don't believe these idiots since at that time, their review was full of bs and not realizing that the game was difficult to begin with). Ducktales Remasted was a remake since it only had a couple of differences that "enhanced what the game was either missing or had problems to begin with. That and it was meant to bring back the memories of how the game was to those and gave newcomers what made it a classic for those who played it in the 80s. That and it didn't go stray away from what made the game an underrated classic for those who loved the cartoon series as well. Keeping in mind that this was the last time that Scrooge Mcduck was voiced by Alan Young. And you tell me that this game is a remake. Here's another remake. Splaterhouse. Remember that game back years ago when Namco brought that back more gorier and over the top and keeping what made the sequels well done for Xbox 360 / PS3? It had more combo attacks that made it a well made remake that knew what made it a classic as well as brought new material to keep it fresh and original while keeping in touch with the franchise and its controversial material (such as having Jim Cummings as the voice of the mask, cursing and being more like a badass Darkwing Duck combined with Pete and such). It was more of a remake of what made Splatterhouse so fun on the Genesis as well as the Arcade. And you tell me that this game is a remake. Now le't s bring in the more spiritual successors. Rocket Knight. A Big Spiritual Sequel to the classic Rocket Knight Adventures game that not only had the aesthetics of what made the games a classic to fans all around, but also revived the series that was mostly forgotten by the social media and such. It also had alot of new material that was built upon of the mechanics it decided to go around while keeping the charm of the games like Sparkster, its sequel. And you tell me that this game is remake. Now let's go to the current gaming side to bring this full circle. Sonic Mania, a new game that was made by one guy (ironically)for Sega. The game looks amazing and is inspired by the 3 game of Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Knuckles, as well as having alot of tributes to also Sonic CD with how the music is set up as well as the Sonic OVA and cartoons it had over the years. Yet some people think it's a full fledged remake of Sonic 1 since its inclusion of Green Hill Zone, yet it follows what good Sonic fan games have been doing, like Sonic Before the Sequel as well as After the Sequel, lately. Even with Green Hill Zone Included, it's a different game all together really since it had different mechanics that really stood out lately. And I NEED to repeat this again, you think of Toejam and Earl Back in Da Groove as a remake of Toejam and Earl 1. I know that the skin of Earl throws most people off since it's his "retro" look he has in the past games, but for those who watched the "Trailer" for the Kickstarter, he wears his clothes similar to his "Mission to Earth" base he had in that game, indicating he finally got with the times. That and also the game also borrows elements from the other games. Here's some interests from the sequels: From Panic on Funkatron: [X] HYPERFUNK ZONE! [X] Peabo returing (the green three eyed alien is Peabo and was a key character to helping you finding Lamont's Favorite Things as well as teaching you how to dance) [X] Construction Workers (never appeared in the first game as far as I remember) [X] Lewanda (red one eyed female girlfriend of Toejam) From Mission to Earth: [X] Houses (in which in this footage you can get cash as well as presents) [X] Sushi Guys (might be based on the first game but still is from the third game). [X]Latisha is playable (third character playable in the storyline of the third game) I could go on and on about how this game is more of a "spiritual" successor than Panic on Funkotron and Mission to Earth as well as the spin off game with the Tomato gun. But in reality, this game is what I consider a return to form since it puts new materail that most fans wanted for years and years. Making this game really more of a grand return and not a remake. It also has remixes of the music as well (though Mission to Earth did this as well, so it's not new). The gameplay is similar, but it's more likely it has alot to do with the fact that Greg Johnson listened to the fans and gave them what made Toejam and Earl AWESOME! (No Pun Intended). To me, I think it's just like the haters who hate Pokemon and Yo Kai Watch, they don't know what made it popular and it might be because of how they have heard of the game, yet it keeps popping up being obxious. Yet for the lucky, once they play it, they at least stop listening to the whinings of those who just want Shooters Shooters Everyday and start realizing there is more genres of games out there that don't get explored daily and lately, being brought back because it worked so well in the past, so why needing to bury it when it should be brought back. I don't hate the artwork of Toejam and Earl in this game since it looks great to me and is really what I wanted to see in a long time (with alot of 80s material coming back, it's time the 90s also make a comeback too). Greg Johnson really did listen well and even then, the game didn't look like this back in their proposal video (it looked more like a prototype, but the idea still works). The gameplay really is becoming more and more like the first game and its wonderful. At least I love how the 90s vibe it's oozing out since the art style is good here. No complaints there. Sure Adult Swim is producing this, but at least in this footage, there's no Rick and Morty references (which most people would have cringed on since some people may or may not like that show), stupid bad jokes like in some of their other stuff, and at least it keeps it fresh and funky as always. :) So in reality, I wanted to say this cause I will be getting this on console soon and this will bee as good as the old games (might want to hook up with my friends to this as well.) But alas, this is the internet where there is opinions free of charge. And I don't mind it. As long as you appreciate the game and don't "FORCE" down your opinion onto others as if it is FACT. (Most people tend to forget this concept ALOT). So if you hate the game, it's fine, but I won't complain. Just as long as you don't force it like most fans have lately. And besides, who knows how this game can turn out as it might be a nice comeback of this type of genre. :) I know this comment went on too long, but I want to prove a point. I've seen gamers being winey and complaining, but they must also appreciate games coming back in a time where all hope is lost somewhat to this unfortunately old school gamers. It's time to WAKE UP! and realize that complaining doesn't make you as smart as a peanut or a hip as weiner, more like as lame as a doornail paint drying through the wall and doing nothing good or special. I know I might be wrong, and I'm happy it that. But let me ask you this, do you wanna end up playing a game that is broken and is riddled with problems? (No Man's Sky) Do You want to play another boring let's play of a game that has been done so many times? (Call of Duty). Do you want to end up having alot of unhappiness when playing it with a best friend and yelling at him for sucking? It's time to bring togetherness all around! As Happy Potter Once said: "Checkmate."

This one feels like they wanted to do another version in the series, but didn't have the resources to match the last version "mission to earth", so they just spun it as get'in back to the original. There's really nothing wrong with that, but personally I would've really wanted to dive even further into their 3D reality (imagine what could've been done with today's technology.) Hopefully this creates an interest level that inspires a true update down the road...

This is definitely 90s inspired. The abstract weirdness reminds me of Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network’s golden age (Rocko’s Modern Life, Aaah! Real Monsters, Cow and Chicken, etc.). I grew up with the original games and this feels like a natural evolution of the franchise. Updated sounds and visuals, but otherwise, gameplay looks intact with few new mechanics. I like it.

Looks really good. Takes aspects from the first two games.

Guys please darken the colors. I hope it's not too late. The aesthetics are close but not right.

ok so the devs have listened a little since the last prototype was released. the game looks a little less ugly like a 5 year old drew it and they put the starry background in :) but its still a bit iffy. the blend of 3D and 2D is very jarring :/ super flat 2D images on a 3D platform just looks wrong there's no consistent art direction here so it looks lazy and fan made. some more cell shading on the 2D objects might make it less jarring or just make the platform look 2D and flat and basic like the rest even if it is still a 3D model. also Earls walk is awful and very off, he does not appear to have any weight and is just floating along, in the old games he leaned back and stuck his belly out and had to lunge forwards with a strut and it looked great and suited the character. I really hope they fix all this because were in an age now where rebooting classic old things is the norm weather its games or movies and for the most part they always fail to deliver and its getting frustrating

what the heck? How did this come out and I never heard about it? Me and my 10 yr old have been playing the genesis version of this off and on so this is a great thing to find.

Once you're in control of these characters I got a feeling you will feel right back at home! I used to love getting lost in the game and wandering round off to level 0 with the hula ladies loved it and only completed it when I bought a sega again whilst at uni! But then it came out on ps3 so I sold it but then it hasn't reappeared for PS4 YET! Waiting for this!

The first one was my game back in the day. Though, thanks to my little cousin who was four at the time, we have and forever will call the elevator, the 'Modulator' because that's what he called it for....whatever reason.

I'm extremely happy to see this return to form, I hold original to be one of the greatest couch co-op games of all time. That said, I do find something about the graphics for this new game offputting. I think it's the way the player character is being treated as a 3D model despite being drawn 2D and traversing a visually 2D isometric plane but in a 3D game engine. I also agree with commenters saying the walk cycles seem off, and I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the larger issue. I don't really understand the visual presention being used here, it seems messier than going all 2D. I'm not sure if it was done to be visually unique but I don't think it's a good look.

What do people not like so much about TJ&E 3? I think it’s pretty clear from looking at this that they would have had much more success with a more modern 3D game like the 3rd game. I had a ton of fun with that game back in the day and it was quite funky

the movement seems a bit a awkward, but i'm not dissin the game by any means. the attention to detail is insane, the inclusion of panic's highlights. absolute hype.
