Hi Ovela, i believe what he meant was "scared" instead of "rude". There were times especially on remote rural areas where we rarely see foreigners, we become shy and all and scared that we might make mistake with our "English" so we choose not to talk to foreigners instead. Basically it is more effective that foreigners make the move first in opening a conversation coz we will be obliged to respond but that will make us feel more comfortable though.. 😊

No. I believe he didnt say "Filipinos are rude that is why they dont approach foreigners" What was meant is that "Filipinos have this perception that foreigners are rude"
@seolwah20982 жыл бұрын
I beg to disagree but I think rude is the right term. Not because you don't think the same way is it's already not the way it is. I'm Filipino and working closely with foreigners. They are indeed very rude and demanding. A lot from my circle specially avoids dealing with Americans. I mean, they are called Karen for a reason. But I also agree that a lot of us are shy talking and approaching them. But still, there is a great number that has a view of foreigners being rude.
@kimmyspecs2 жыл бұрын
You have another point. Me as a filipino, I do not believe we were "scared" or thinking they're "rude" but many locals do know or understand when someone speak english but it is a fact that locals cannot reciprocate english conversatons that well. I would rather call us "shy" than "scared".
@kimmyspecs2 жыл бұрын
At some point, maybe, I can say that we are "scared" of foreigners for we know some of their traits. But I don't think we are literally "scared" or afraid of them but in the sense we are "scared" what we might do to them if they cause us harm.
@juliebelleazpa35172 жыл бұрын
Generally, this is a fact, most Filipinos are SHY. We sometimes don't do the first move to make friends with foreigners because we intend to observe the person first in order for us to know how to deal with them. Basically,it goes with the saying, "My behavior depends on how you treat me"

As for my observation Filipinos are the quiet type specially in interacting like talking to a foreigner. We usually experience silence from Filipino counterpart whenever we have a meeting. But that doesn't mean they don't understand they can deliver a certain task with fying colors, they just don't want to talk and discuss.
@cristopherrushbalo52452 жыл бұрын
I also dont agree that most Filipinos think foreigners are rude. Its case to case basis but i may generally say that filipinos are shy to start or spark a conversation (for many reasons like language barriers) but if a foreigner approaches a filipino in a nice way, filipinos would usually respond. We love foreigners visiting our country. Its just a simple rule: be nice and everyone will also be nice.
@bimbam96032 жыл бұрын
@M J no, we assume that if you are a "western, indian or african look" foreigner you speak english, cause in our head English is a universal language, so whenever we start a conversation to foreigners that we didn't know, we speak english and not our own language. If you are asian looking we might throw some konichiwa (old filipinos of japayukis) and anyeong (young filipinos bcause of kpop) this is so funny.
@MrJacksuper2 жыл бұрын
filipinos specially in the provinces are typical shy. Altho they love to be your friend as foreigner, most of them are hesitant to approach you first because they are simply shy. but once you start to say hello to them, they will give a smile and a hello in reply and that's the starting point of a conversation. Very seldom that a filipino would approach a foreigner for the worry of, that they might be ignored/disregard or even shut off.
@JancelTv2 жыл бұрын
Filipinos are very welcoming..the reason why we don't start and approach foreigners is just because some of us don't know how to start our conversation in English,because not all Filipinos can speak English well..but if you try to ask or approach a conversation with us,we speak hard and try our best to have a good conversation with you😂we are very friendly and we are very happy if we see a foreigners coming in our country..

When I was in my late 20's or early 30's, my family and my brother's in Laws went to a restaurant, forgot the name but that restaurant has waiters and waitresses that sings to their customers so definitely its noisy but its fun. While we're eating 2 foreigners got angry at one waitress and said why are you all noisy, can't you see that we're talking here. First of all, the restaurant is a noisy restaurant to begin with because of the songs they are singing to their customers especially if there's a birthday celebration going on. Second, if they are going to talk in a quiet place, why in hell did they go there in the first place, they should have gone to a cemetery or in a church or something. The funny thing though is that when those 2 foreigners made a ruckus and shouted at the waitress, my family and my sister in laws family looked at me right away, like all of them and its like they think I'm gonna do something about it like kick those 2 foreigners out of the restaurant and even get them deported out of the country....lol but yeah, that was the first time I've experienced rude foreigners and I've never seen anyone like it after that so not all foreigners are rude. I'm a shy person, I don't go and say hi to a person first but if they talk to me like asking directions, I'll definitely talk to them and help them with that.

Hi ovela. For 10, Filipinos won't usually approach you unless you approach us first because we don't know if the person would want to be alone and we don't want to unintentionally intrude on their privacy. As for vloggers, when we see them and their cameras we know that they are making content so we know that they are open to interacting with us and that's when we usually say hi first.

instead of saying "Rude" it's more like they feel intimidated by foreign people, especially tall, white or black people, where they get awed by them (in a respectful, hopeful way) something like seeing your favorite basketball player on the streets
@Zee_10032 жыл бұрын
i disagree with #10. it's more like Filipinos are just shy or intimidated or they're afraid to have a conversation because they can't express themselves in English that well. the one thing i agree with in this last bit is that Filipinos genuinely want to talk to foreigners and get to know them.
@nhellyuzon85482 жыл бұрын
The fact is most Filipinos especially in rural areas are not used to meeting foreigners and struggle to communicate in foreign language although they understand it. Aside from being shy, its the situation where most Filipinos feel more pressured because they might be judged by fellow Filipinos when they speak in english. We are more than shy to our fellow Filipinos rather than the foreigners. The major problem of communication is the language barrier. You know, most Filipinos like compliments, so if a Filipino speaks English fluently, its a plus points. But if your not that good, might as well avoid conversation to foreigners than get embarrased by yourself and to the people around you. That's a real fact. But in times when foreigners ask for help or directions, all Filipinos are more than willing to assist you to the best that they can, even if they are getting troubles to communicate in english. Some use sign language if possible😅. If they can't really communicate, Filipinos will call for someone that will be able to do so. In this regard, Filipinos are genuinely capable of helping others, not just to foreigners but to fellow Filipinos as well.. As to communication, we value english more than our own language. That's saddening. But because our country has more than 111 dialects spoken, english tend to be an important role in our communication. Even parents nowadays, would prefer their child to speak in english at birth😅 than our own language. Because its a plus points even more in academics. But that's how it is. This is based on my own understanding and observations as a Filipino, it may be different to others, but having differences and personal preferences makes communication really interesting.

I definitely agree with number 10. I can see that a lot of people in the comment section is denying the rude part and wording it as shy or scared. That's one characteristic of Filipino that always happen when we feel that we offend someone or that they may think badly of us that's why they are wording it on a more lighter perspective. Although being shy and scared are true as well, it goes the same with us thinking foreigners are rude. Specially those from the West. I'm not generalizing the whole population but they are called Karen for a reason. Base on experience as well, foreigners tend to expect themselves to be treated extra special here on our own country and at times very demanding and rude to elderlies. They also don't like extended families while Filipino is known as a close knit family that celebrates gatherings together. One of the husband of my Tita which is an American even ordered for her own child to be left with the grandmother saying he don't want childrens at home because they are noisy. He just wants my Tita to live with him.
@GT-Oldschool2 жыл бұрын
No. Filipinos don't have the perception that foreigners are rude. I don't know why the hell he said that. The main reason they won't approach you is because they are shy since they're not so comfortable speaking english. Even that being said, Filipinos don't tend to be shy approaching and greeting foreigners vlogging. They're actually quite friendly in that respect. I know because I watch a lot of foreigners travelling in the Philippines and you see it all the time. Filipinos are no strangers to foreigners. They love them. They always have. They have loved foreigners for the longest time, witnessing this as a kid growing up there in the 80's. What he said couldn't be anymore false.

Hello Sir Ovela, of course Filipinos are naturally accommodating and very friendly but then, it's also a fact that we cannot make the first move to talk to a foreigner if we feel intimidated. @evepalisada26402 жыл бұрын
no 10 comment: Filipinos esp women are naturally shy...to say that foreigners are rude (in my opinion) is not altogether true... foreigners need to initiate the first greeting/conversation coupled with a welcoming smile in order for Filipinos to open up, or greet back. we are also friendly people.

Some of Filipino are intimidated speaking in English not just to foreigners but also with fellow Filipinos, commonly in class, meetings and other gatherings because of the struggle in construction of phrases and grammar errors. Again, not just to foreigners.

There are many kinds of Filipinos, depending on their regional and cultural background, social status, and personalities, so some might be outgoing or spontaneous but not initially. Some might just be shy, self-conscious, nervous. intimidated, or overly scared of impressions, imaginary things, and rumors about foreigners. There are a few who would like to stay in the background but there are others who want to do the opposite and just hog the limelight. So feel out what type of people you might be talking to and act accordingly, then go with the flow.

All are ok but it will be difficult to capsulate all in one video. People differ by their personal uniqueness. Most people are friendly but may feel intimidated to make the first personal contact. It is actually because there are many instances where we are seen as lower and dumb. I'm a Filipina but some do feel I am rude because I talk straight. My bad. So I let my youngest sister do the negotiating talks for me. Children are easier to get along with for me.
