Went zero prepared for an AWS interview and got the job. While in AWS prepared for a month for an internal job transition, yet failed miserably. And at that time i was coached by 4 managers inside AWS before the interview, who themselves were hiring managers and bar raisers. The key to getting a job at Amazon or a job at any company is be yourself and present your core technical and problem solving skills honestly. Everything after that is a bit of luck and alignment of stars. All the best

It's a great time to be a woman in the tech industry. At my former employer, women got first dibs on any open management positions. Female engineers are so scarce that they are pretty much guaranteed a spot in many large tech companies. When I worked for a large computer company, HR told us that we HAD to hire a female engineer. We made offers to four different female candidates and we were outbid every time by other tech companies. After trying for almost two years to hire a woman, we ended up finally making an offer to a male college graduate and he is still working for that same company. When I was in college, IBM came to interview but the recruiter told us that IBM would only consider women and minority candidates. IBM hired the worst student in my graduating class. IBM only hired him because there were no women in my graduating class.
@petertrast5 жыл бұрын
I think most great companies want to hire great people, not necessarily great technicians. It must be true because I know I usually succeed where more experienced or better technically qualified people often fail. There is a Venn Diagram where technical skills and people skills overlap. I think it is the sweet spot that opens doors for people like me who are in the top 10-15% of both but not the top 1% of either one or the other. I really preach this to those that I mentor in the IT world and I see it applying across a broad swath of the technical giants. Be a great engineer and someone who loves people, even if you aren't the very best of either...
@GuitarsAndSynths5 жыл бұрын
Amazon only hires two types of people: those on visas that work cheap and 2: those with very AWS certification. They want billable cheap resources from Day 1. Making money is their mantra and not paying taxes. They don't care about anything else. Or you need to be buddies with a VP at Amazon or well connected to bypass the stress day long interview process.
@shawnp62915 жыл бұрын
good point. i had been reading something similar , that its better (easier) to be top 25% in two skills and combine them, than expect to be the top 5% and dominate a very specific field.

I have some general questions if it's not too much trouble. 1. How bad does it lower my chances if I needed hints or help from my interviewer to solve a technical question? 2. I just went on a onsite interview at Amazon. Was extremely annoyed at the behavioral interview. I felt the interviewers themselves would not impress me if I asked them the same questions...And I was proven right. I had asked them the same questions they did but using different words and was not impressed by what they had to say! Tsk tsk tsk I guess beyond the leadership principles it boils down to how the panel rates you (thumbs up or down) or if you raised the bar in their eyes. And that is very subjective as it can disqualify you regardless of how well you adhered to leadership principles or technical aspects. Not sure I want to work at a company like Amazon anymore and will look elsewhere. Also don't expect any feedback. Just a simple "we decided not to go forward"

Distributed systems is a great topic to know in depth. Prep that really helped me was writing down relevant experiences for each of the amazon leadership principles, and remembering to be myself. Studying all the common algorithms on a site like code chef also helped a lot. Remembering to think out loud helped me catch a lot of things I would have done wrong. The interviewer was able to follow my thought process and caught a few things for me, even. Sorry if these are a bit vague, but I don't want to say anything I'm not supposed to.
