Not gonna lie, games like MGS and Conkers, or games that broke the 4th wall in general, taught me a lot about what it means thinking outside of the box. Just the overall mindset; wasn't prepared for any of it as a kid due to really comprehending the purpose. As I'm older, I absolutely appreciate it since its like the devs never were afraid of getting weird, considering the serious tones.

its what made them so great they messed with the player in a way that if you did not know anything about how games were made and or expect weird things to happen would really mess with you for me and my friends it helped we played a lot of games that had more than one outcome to every event in the game so we were always expecting something weird

I'm amazed you didn't include StarTropics for the NES. It came packaged with a letter from a relative that the game later requires you to literally run under water to reveal a secret passcode to progress!

StarTropics is such an underrated gem. Bought a retro console specifically so I could play it again (built up my NES catalog afterwards).

I kid you not, that Scarecrow mission in Arkham Asylum had me take out the CD and put it back in multiple times before I finally gave up and just let the game continue. Only when I saw the weird moonlight shadow I realised something was different. I genuinely thought the game was broken.

The one with Conker... That's just the ending. There's no more gameplay after that "game-stopping moment"

The "game stopping moment" in that one is the heavy machine gun encounter. So, so many deaths trying to get through that part!

That moment in MSG2 when, they fake Game Over during a big fight was mean. It doesn't pause the game unfortunately but it did make me stop.

I'd like to add another entry to this list - 1997's Nuclear Strike. It's the fifth (and, so far, final) game in a helicopter combat series from EA. Anyone who had played one of the previous titles in the series knew what they were getting - bad guys attack, you retaliate, meet mission objectives then fly home - but the writers of the fifth game had an ace up their sleeves. As you might deduce from its title, the player is tasked with stopping a terrorist organisation from detonating a nuclear device. Nothing to worry about for veterans of the previous games. Except... you can't stop them from setting the bomb off and you find yourself playing through a final level surrounded by devastation; although some landmarks still remain on your world map, the greater part of it has been destroyed in the explosion. It's a jaw-dropping moment that suddenly changes the player from "let's stop the bad guys!" to "AVENGE THE DEAD!!".

1990, Star Tropics NES. The first time I remember this happening. The game came with a letter from the protagonist'suncle, who you go on a grand adventure to find. It's a nice bit of story for the early 90s. It's not until half way through where you're stopped by a password, the only clue of which is "dip my letter in water". If you dip your uncle's said real letter in water, you get the other half of the code.
@Stratelier
@Stratelier Жыл бұрын
Fun fact: on the digital Wii release, the game's digital manual included a copy of this letter, with a clickable link at the bottom to show the password. It even featured a small "dipping in water" animation.

When I got MGS it arrived busted in the post, the game was fine but the box was shattered beyond repair so I traded the discs over to a normal CD case and through everything else away. When I got to the bit with needing Meryls code I was gutted 😂 Luckily there’s only 200 codex frequencies you need to look at minus the numbers you already have so didn’t take that long. Also if you start at the lowest number 140.00 you only need 16 tries to get to 140.15. Added note on these vids I seriously can’t believe they are being censored now. How ridiculous!

Obligatory _Undertale_ mention: When the true villain tries to take over the game, on console versions this will "fake reset" the game, as a prelude to its final boss battle. BUT if you are playing the original PC version... ...then the game _actually shuts itself off_ at this point, no warning no explanations. You are allowed to assume the game legitimately crashed, and have to actually restart the game to proceed to the final boss battle.

on the emulator i have it gets to that point and does it itself via a built in command in the program well it was a thing on my old computer that died cant remember which emulator i was using but it did that with any game that had one of those weird things in it as did my ps2 NES one and the others it was within the settings of the programs and required you understanding the system within the emulator

What about one of the best Nintendo games ever Startropics? You had to retrieve a letter that came in the Nintendo case and submerge it in water to get one of the sub codes. If you didn't have it, you couldn't compete the game.

Yea it's tough to argue with #1. That absolutely got me for a few seconds when I first played. Brilliant fakeout and is easily one of the highlights to an all-time classic. It's still my favorite of the series. Also shoutout to the "hint" in the game over screen. I was laughing hysterically by that point. It really doesn't get the love it deserves.

Startropics should've been on this list. Also there is more than one point in Doki Doki Literature Club that everything sort of stops and breaks that wall. Would Undertale qualify if you're on that genocide route?
@Stratelier
@Stratelier Жыл бұрын
Undertale may already qualify for Flowey taking over the Neutral Route (console versions perform a "fake reset", but the PC version actually shuts off and you must restart it yourself to proceed) ...

When I first played RDR, I knew nothing of the ending. I reloaded my save before the door opens probably 10 times. I ended up putting the game down for probably two months before coming back to actually finish the game.

It's so pathetic that you have to censor the violence in videos now to avoid demonetization. Because KZbin thinks kids might see it even though they already made a separate platform for kids.

All of the Life Is Strange games have moments where you can just sit and watch the surroundings while the soundtrack plays in the background. The images get repetitive pretty quickly but they’re great moments to just stop and think.

I did try brute forcing the CODEC entry in MGS 1. Went through the whole spectrum and tried them all and didn't get it. I mean, of course I either missed one or skipped past it too fast, but I still spent the time of going through them all.

One of my favourite but most frustrating gaming stories is borrowing mgs from a friend in a disc pouch just before the summer holidays. I spent hours backtracking and searching everywhere for a cd case before having to go to a local library and finally get the code online. Its now a piece of information that will never leave my brain 140.15
