Yeah. I suspect we will see a significant grading scandal come to the surface in the next few years. The grading companies are waaay too cozy with the companies whose cards they are evaluating. Panini Encased has already been proven to have Beckett rubber stamping 10’s without looking at the card.

This is the best nerd card channel for sure and I mean that in a good way! Too many channels just talking about flipping and not enough people talking about the stories about why they're in the hobby in the first place. Really enjoy this series as it reminds me why I got into the hobby in the first place.

Great video. Drooling a bit over that Koufax, as 1950s Baseball is a focus of mine. Incidentally, PSA absolutely sucks with pre-war slabbing - allowing the Chance card to tilt like that in the holder is an abomination.

Love the stories behind your cards, Chris! Your Ripken signing reminds me of going to Yankees Spring training games as a kid. I grew up in Ft. Lauderdale and would go to games when the old-timers were in town to try to get their autos. I got all the greats on 3x5 index cards and my absolute 2 favorites were Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. I always kept my 2 best ones in a safe place and a couple of years ago decided to get them framed with a nice pic of the 2 legends. Like your Cal card, I've always known they were real because I personally got them, but I figured it would increase their value if I got them certified. I took them to a TX card show that JSA was at and they were both rejected as fakes. I was really frustrated because I know I stood at a fence to get these signatures in the early 70s as a 10 or 11 yr. old kid. I asked the JSA rep if there was anyone I could talk to and he said he'd see what he could do, but couldn't make any promises. He took pics of the autographs and sent me on my way. A few days later I got a call from someone at JSA and they asked me a bunch of questions about the origin of the signatures. After I told the guy my story, he said he'd send me a letter of authenticity. That made me a lot happier, but it just goes to show you that sometimes even the experts think real signatures are fake. Keep the videos coming!
@collectorinvestordealer
@collectorinvestordealer 3 жыл бұрын
Really interesting story! Its possible they weren't familiar with Mantle's and Dimaggio's auto from the 70s as some players auto changes over time. But that sort of makes yours even cooler.
@mberman61
@mberman61 3 жыл бұрын
@@collectorinvestordealer Yeah, I thought the same thing, but from what I can tell, Mantle and DiMaggio's circa 70s autos remained relatively unchanged up until the time they stopped signing (back when the stars seem to take pride in having a pretty signature). Anyway, I'm a huge fan of your channel...look forward to all the videos, especially the "good stuff!"

Thanks again Chris for the analysis of 10 cards from your pc & why they mean so much to you. Also enjoyed learning how subjective the grading can be by PSA staff, as evidenced by your example of the Koufax card. Great video. Love the back stories and the NBA/NFL footage. Also got laugh out of no need to get Ripken auto authenticated. At that age Thurman Munson was my favorite player. I met him once at Yankee Stadium with my dad and brother. I have autograph from that moment as well as photo of me standing with him while he is doing the actual signing. No need to involve Beckett or PSA there either. Thanks for sharing your collection - be well.

I love clutch players and really admire players like Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling for the same reasons. Reggie Miller made those Knicks series into epic dramas that were so compelling and fun. He was a pure showman on and off the court. It was fun to watch him all game running around and off screens the entire game, and even though his total points in the games don't jump off the stat sheet, it was still an achievement against the Knicks and how hard he had to work for every single one. His off day interviews stoking the flames were awesome -- he would always say these crazy things with a smile on his face. Spike Lee gets credit too for getting involved in an organic way -- I still remember it being a story that Spike Lee had arrived in Indiana for a game at Market Square Arena and saying funny things to the media as he was walking through the airport. I was entertained. I haven't seen anything like that in any sport since.

Reggie Miller is my favorite Basketball player. I got to see him from Row 5 midcourt against the Timberwolves. A cool bonus was it was Kevin Garnett's Rookie year and they were giving away a life size poster to kids 14 and younger. I was in my 30's so no poster for me but after the game I walked up and down the aisles looking under the seats and I found one. I don't think there could have been more than a Thousand or so given out. I have checked on Ebay over the years and have never seen one for sale. I still have mine in the original tube, hoping it's worth something.

A real bugaboo of mine is how “objective” PSA grading really is or is not. Case in point in this video!! You send the 55 Sandy K in and it comes back a “2”. Then you resubmit it and it gets a “7”. How is that big an error made from trained-objective graders. Or how many times you see a gem mint “10” that’s off center or obvious edge ware? How many “8”’s look absolutely perfect. I, for 1, always inspect the card myself before just excepting a PSA grade. By the way, Reggie Miller was a spectacular player who, mainly with his efforts, made the pacers a successful club in the 80’s and 90’s!

Yep. Darrell Green was the best cornerback in the 80s. He was also known as the NFLs "fastest man". They didn't throw the ball as much back then so the position wasn't given as much attention as it is now. That changed with Deon Sanders who made sure everyone knew his name. That Darrell Green rookie card comes from one of the best rookie card classes ever. I love that 1984 Topps set.

PSA going from 2 to 7 is unreal! haha As a newcomer to the hobby PSA seems like one of those companies you will either defend to the grave or absolutely despise. AI seems to be the future. They're not perfect but I really like what HGA is doing. They are the "anti-PSA" in a lot of ways. I've recently submitted a batch of vintage football/basketball cards to SGC as well and am interested in how that turns out. I'm curious what others think.

This is what i hate about tpg. How could your 55 koufax be a 2 then a 7? The gap between is so large. I got a card back as a 1.5 and resent and got a 6. Makes no sense.

That Koufax - nice! But - that story - it goes to show you, that grading is pointless. I mean, it creates value, but... with it being THAT subjective at times, or even that it is subjective... it's nonsense. especially on newer cards.

If you go through a large collection and stumble across a raw Gretzky rookie do you feel that there is an obligation to let the seller know it was in there?

I have done that sort of thing before, although I didnt with the Gretzky. I dont remember the details of the Gretzky collection or who I bought it from.

@@collectorinvestordealer it’s part of the business and at some point you can’t babysit the seller. But, when I’m looking around for deals I always cave and say “you get what you have here, right”. Maybe that’s how you go from a collector to a investor/dealer. You just can’t be that way all the time if your meal relies on it.
