Butterflies are so beautiful. Several years ago some friends & I were hanging out next to a small stream when something nearby on the shore caught our attention. Upon closer inspection we realized it was a mass of monarch butterflies just chilling out opening & closing their wings. After about 10 minutes they all took flight together. It was one of the most magical events I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. I'll never forget it.

A swarm of Monarchs came through my backyard in SoCal. about 5-6 months ago ( about March/April, 2019 ). They must have come back from a migration - there were thousands of them. Some stopped in my neighbors orange tree, some landed all over my back yard, but most kind of appeared out of nowhere, all from the same direction, and just kept going North West. Truly unreal how they just appeared seemingly out of nowhere visible for a short time, then disappeared as they left my yard. Truly magical :)

Make sure if you purchase milkweed, AKA "butterfly bush", make sure the nursery you get it from dose not use pesticides on it. If you have a section of your yard to spare, plant a butterfly garden with native plants to your area.

There are groups, such as iNaturalist, for which you can post observations and contribute to our knowledge of insects. I have two degrees in entomology and have made it the main part of my career, but I learn a lot from people who simply have an interest, make observations and share what they've seen.

I raise monarch's so of course I am partial to those beautiful being's. I released around 160 last summer, and this summer ( 2019) I released roughly around 200 healthy beautiful majestic butterflies. They are an honor to raise and release. Please plant your milkweed! When milkweed flowers, there honestly is no prettier heavenly scent.

I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and the beautiful Monarch Butterfly is native to this area. He mentioned the name “Milkweed”, that’s because these butterflies love the milky white fluid that oozes out of the plant.. So if you live in this part of Pennsylvania and want to attract the Monarch Butterfly to your garden, plant plenty of the Milkweed plant and once they know where it’s growing, they’re come back to your garden every year, especially before they migrate.

You should grow milkweeds and goldenrod--the former is the larval food plant although adults feed on its nectar, and goldenrod is an important source of food for the adults as they migrate in the late summer and autumn. You can also watch females lay eggs on milkweeds, and then collect the eggs to rear the caterpillars to adulthood.

@@bobjacobson858 We make sure the milkweed plants aren't cut down in our yard. And lots of goldenrod grows here too! I was lucky enough to watch several Monarchs lay their eggs on the milkweed plants this past summer! It was amazing!
