For the record, the Seville was not an answer to the 1973 oil crisis, but to the increasing popularity of smaller and more exclusive European cars like Mercedes-Benz. It's development was well underway before the oil crisis...after all, lead times are long in the automotive industry. Bringing an all-new car from conception to market in two years is simply not possible even if they did begin with an existing platform.

In 66 Olds division of GM wanted to rival the Rivi, so they came up with a very state out the art version which had a complex chain driven front wheel drive system. It was called the TORO NA DO. My dad had one of the '70s New Yorker Broughams. His dream car. It was a land yacht. I was in my late teens, 6'1", about 220lbs. I could just about fully stretch out on the back seat. It was also the first car I had ever seen w/ a digital dash. I thought it was soooo cool until he let me drive one night. On I95 in VA, doing about 60 in a rainstorm. The dash went nuts, the speedo and all of the gauges started flashing up and down. Fortunately it kept running. He took it back to the dealer, he had dealt w/ the same salesman for close to 20 yrs. Seems Chrysler sent all of the dashes to production and claimed they didn't have any spares. They had to give dad a loaner for a month while waiting for the part, then another 2 weeks to get a guy in who could reset the mileage on the new dash to match the old.
