10 Most HATED Foxbody Modifications! An Infamous Opinion - TIP204E21

This video is strictly my own opinion and I respect anyone who is an enthusiast and believe we should all do what makes us happy. A lot of people hate the way I mod my cars and that's OK!
So I decided to come up with my own list of hated Foxbody Mods to share with you guys so that you know where I stand. I get it, my opinion may differ from others but that's what makes our Foxes all unique! Let me know what your most hated mods are!

I was never into the GTS head/tailight covers on euro cars but love them on 4eye cars. I like the GTS side window "rain" shields(?) though.

My most hated mid on a fox are stuff that just don't belong. Cheesy fender vent(non functional type). Stuff. Over exaggerated cowl hoods have always been an eye sore to me.

@@5150madawg you do understand that during the 40’s - 50’s there was one hot engine, the flathead; then followed by the SBC. Manufacturers have come a long ways since then. No need to cross breed any more. I’m a Ford guy, but also a car guy; don’t like seeing a BBC in a classic Firebird either. To each their own though.

Top hated mods..... 1- The shaved door handles your gonna do to lemon dropped. Ya I know....low blow..... 2 - One piece head lights 3- Saleen whale tail 4 - cowl hoods over 1 inch. 5 - Weld drag lites...the ugliest wheels on a fox...you might as well have a mullet if you own these 6 - Monster tach screwed to the dash 7- Non original paint colours, murals, Skulls, tribal graphics, etc.... 8 - Euro tail lights 9- Non Ford engine swaps....Example...LS swaps 10- The people who cut their GT skirts to get tail pipes out the back.

I agree on the carb swaps and a big one for me is the "ac delete". Drives me nuts when someone takes a perfectly functioning ac system and rips everything out. Serves no purpose.

My philosophy is “Less is More” ! My home built airplane is a perfect example, polished aluminum simple instrument but necessary equipment. Always receives compliments and photos. This is same with my Fox too clean and simple. Great content Chris keep up the good work!

EFI is full of crap because of the wiring involved for example one wire goes bad the car can run like crap or not run at all witch makes it difficult to diagnose and work on not to mention these wires are like 30 years old .. carb is so much more simpler to get your car running and less bullshit to fix it. Go watch uncle tony garage he has video explaining it.

The most hated for me... Are non mustang specific wheels.. And I don't mean Borbet or ROH wheels. I mean like a modern wheel that no one would ever put on a fox like niche or something. Also anything larger than 18s bother me.

oh and just a little pat on the shoulder for me back in late 90,s they held an event called the 5 liter shootout where any mustang with a 5 liter could enter the event from bone stock all the way to full blown race car , the event took 3 full days from morning to 11 pm with 800 plus participants , well me and my little 91 lx and yes my carburated 5 liter with 3 guages in the dash pad vent and i drove the car to the track and back home with slicks in the back seat and hydraulic jack in trunk... I WON THE 5 LITER SHOOTOUT ...how many people do you know that can say that , , well 1 now seeing as im on your channel , im old school and ive seen it all and personally saw and spoke to and raced with all the greats that people heard of and read about from back in the day in the magazines , i was featured in one of the muscle mustangs and fast fords magazines in a small article back then and refused to be in any more magazine adds because i didnt want people to know all my tricks and mods and driving techniques etc etc cause they would write up all your mods and it took me a while to perfect the car and my driving and i didnt want to do all that work so some other guy can simply just do what i did with zero effort in r & d , my secrets still remain my secrets :)

oh and as for guages in the car some are really needed for a carbed fox , shift light is needed when shifting above 6k to 6500k cause the factory rpm guage goes wackko after 5800 rpm and to be consistant for bracket racing its truly needed even on a strip street car , oxygen sensor hooked up to a rich lean guage is need if you want to tune your carb ..carb jets , spark plug gaps and heat range etc this guage wil;l help you tune , vacume guage very important on a carb car , for tuning the carb and it also tells you if you have any miss fires due to bad coil bad plug bad wire even tells you if you blew a head gasket etc and 3rg guage in the guage cage like they called it back then that goes into the vent slot on dash board the 3rd guage is fuel pressure and no you dont look at guages all day while you drive.. the guages are there to help you tune your carbed fox like i said earlier we didnt have tuners and dynos back then , we did everything on our own with the help of the 3 guages in the guage cage , what i find stupid today is a guy driving down the street in his mustang and instead of a hot girl riding shotgun with him he has a laptop in the seat instead hahahahaha

I think the carb thing isn't bad. People get tired of the old electric and computer, surging etc. I'm thinking of doing it one day and it's not crazy expensive. That's just my opinion and totally appreciate and respect yours. I just love these cars. What you think about replacing an old warn out 32 year old engine and going with a crate?

efi to carb , heres why , back in 1993 was common because back then if you did a cam change and bigger injectors and bigger throttle body and mass air meter and shorty headers or long tubes bigger fuel pumps etc your mods would not be at their 100 % capability because of the stock computer , in order to optimise your mods you needed to buy the ford motorsport piggy back system and a lap top to tune your fox , well back then those 2 items alone would run you about 10 000 dollars which was rediculous but what was more rediculous was the fact that noone knew how to tune on a laptop and people would spend days and weeks on the phone with the ford racing hot line guy trying to trouble shoot your piggy back system via a laptop , remember this is 1993 when 1 % of the population knew how to tune on a laptop , this is why many many guys opted to throw in a e303 cam a performer rpm intake and a 650 dp holley carb a set of 373 gears and run low 12,s all day long and if you were daring enough you would put in a nitrous kit and with under 1000 dollars you had yourself an 11 second quarter mile fox , there ya have it ...thats why people back in the day converted from efi to carb ,,oh and yes vortech and paxton supercharges were available back then and those who used them could never do a clean pass down the track cause noone knew how to tune back then and yes they all pulled their paxtons off and went the carb route and were happy fox body owners ,,earlly to mid 90,s was hell for the efi street strip enthusiast so they all went to a carb setup or just threw in a set of heads a cam and nitrous and stayed with their efi

I agree on the gauges, tire profile/sidewall sizing, exhaust tips, aftermarket hood, 5.0 emblems, 1 piece headlights, removing all of the trim and quarter windows, switching to carb and door molding removal, not so much on sway bars or led bulbs.

It bugs me so much when the roof rail moldings, window frames, and rubber on the quarter windows are painted the same color as the car. It’s even worse when someone does a complete color change and they don’t spray the engine compartment. It doesn’t look good when you respray the car white and the engine bay is red.

100% valid list of no no for a Fox Mustand. Hey if caborators were the bomb. Ford would do never switched to EFI. I get it EFI is more expensive to modify. But man I hate seeing EFI Fox Mustangs turned into carb Fox Mustang. And there dumb line. I want to go faster I went carb. Or it is more simple to tune. Heck even Nascar left carburetors and are running EFI.

Can’t stand when people cut up the rear bumper of a GT for tailpipes. I’m ok with carb swaps, there’s certain situations that I can understand.

I concur. Great content. These cars were so affordable new (full page ad in Toronto Sun @ Summit Ford for $14k). When I was in my teens, I didn't know any better on the tasteless mods. This is good advice for the younger guys getting into the foxbody game.

Great video, Chris! I agree with all of those mods. I would also add to the list: over-sized tail pipes welded onto small/stock over axle tubes, sticker overkill, loud accent looming in bright colours under the hood, poorly painted and improperly maintained caliper paint jobs, poorly fitted aftermarket wheels that do not compliment the body lines of the car and chrome door handles. My list is in no particular order. Like you, my OCD twinges with some things. Keep up the great content.

I hate early 80’s front ends bolted on 87-up cars, I hate when shitty non mint 79 Pace Car Recaro’s seats are put in 87-up cars, and I can’t stand colour themed engine bays and motors based on flashy colours or even worse white, and some ass clown throws on a set of thick yellow Accel plug wires with red boots and thinks he just rebuilt the motor. I’m gonna stop there it’s crazy how emotional this makes a guy. Great segment as usual!

Lol I'm "guilty" of two offenses on my 93 Reef Blue Metallic coupe. I have a (real) Saleen wing on my car AND I have Fobra badges as well! My badges are actually carefully mounted 3/4 in. beneath the side belt trim, directly beneath where the 5.0 badge would mount. But I'm not concerned about any opinions regarding my styling choices because ot looks kool to me. Harwood hood as well. Fits perfectly. Lol I know my ROH SNYPERS are approved and they're staggered and MINT, probably one of the nicest sets in the country that are in use.

I inherited my dad's 89 GT convertible when he passed a couple years ago. He committed 5 of the offenses, and it pains me because it is a 90,000 mile car and he was the second owner. I've been working to undo all of the offenses: Monster tach, old school BFG Comp T/A's that stuck out past the rear fenders (actually were rubbing so he installed AIR SHOCKS to lift it!), shitty raised Cobra R hood with the SVO scoop, one piece headlights, AND a carb swap! At least he was clever enough to do the carb swap in such a way that I am easily able to refit EFI to it... he retained the factory fuel pump and distributor, while not cutting any wiring. He rigged up a monster fuel pressure regulator to crank down the fuel pressure. He retained the TFI distributor while keeping the ECU for spark purposes only. He simply unplugged the fuel injection harness at the salt & pepper shakers, and ran 2 wires to the oil pressure & water temp sending units to retain factory gauges.

Carbs is #1 and I've seen it done to other 80's cars like Irocs with arguably one of the sexiest upper intakes ever. Racing stripes drive me crazy. Wheels that stick out past the fender. Pine tree air freshener hanging from mirror lol.

I like doing 4cyl to V8 swaps. I go after the 4 cyl cars. Most don't want to put in the work and by now most 4 cyl chassis are straight compared the V8 cars. Also if some can't get the dash gauges to work on a EFI to carb swap then the don't know electrical. Such a swap can be tastefully done with all gauges working. Even though I'm a master technician, I love carbs.

Chris, thanks for the great video. Hopefully your points will slow people into thinking what the entirety of the project result will be. Some enthusiasts don’t have anyone to bounce their ideas off of and how what’s in their minds eye does to the car. My credo is “Less Is More” others really appreciate the originality of the project. I hate Cowl Hoods too, they're for the strip, not the street. I also agree on the EFI to Carb, this is done because the owner can't fix a surge, or other tuning issue. Don't do that, research, research, research, fix it right!

I think # 1 for me is when you roll up on another foxbody and its nicer then mine, that really errks me! I think the fuel to carb can be just guys buying rollers or converting 4bangers in a lot of cases. Ive never had a carb but i was trying with the idea just for the simplicity of it. Fiber cowl hoods that don't line up... one piece headlights or smoked headlights... any aftermarket tail lamp, but specially the "altezza" style... oversized wheels (anything over 18 just does not look good), mixing 4 Eye car looks with Aero looks (love both designs but do not mix them)

Great list. Im not as particular with wheel/tire specs. I like the modern wheels and have some on my foxbody but they are not crazy huge or obnoxious - do i prefer OEM sure - just happens that i bought it this way. My quick list: 1- Absolutely hate AC Remove'd foxes. i just dont get it. 2- Sloppy/hacked wiring in the engine bay (been cleaning mine up for a yr) 3- Hacked Exhaust I.e. Turndowns in place of LX Tails 4- Gauges and more gauges and extra gauges. Did i mention Gauges??

One thing that literally erks me is when people put cobra emblems on anything other the actual SVT cobras. Why ? It’s not a cobra. I agree it’s your car , do what you want 10) gauges ,unless you need them don’t do it. 9) Tires , meh as long as it doesn’t look silly I don’t really care 8) Exhaust alignment, I agree whole heartily, doesn’t take much more to do it right 7 ) Sway bars are pretty important , unless it’s a strait line car, keep them on. 6 ) Any hood other then the factory is repulsive 5 ) The emblems are so important, placement and style 4 ) Headlights, anything other then factory MINT look like ass , cheap and tacky , includes tails. 3 ) If you paint the car , paint it right , also the bumpers and the trim all needs to come off , no excuses 2 ) If it came fueli from the factory , that’s how it should stay 1) door mouldings should be on all cars , they make the car look better and it’s factory correct.

I go by the 3 F Rule! If you're not Feeding me, Funding me or Fucking me your opinion doesn't matter! LOL Unless I ask for it. The Notch I just bought has all aftermarket gauges. Deleted the cluster, air vents, radio. I am ripping them all out!

#1 for me is cowl hoods. They are like the mullets of the automotive world. Just because every other Fox you see has one, doesn't mean it looks good. #2 is ANY tach installed in a car that didn't have one originally. If you don't know when to shift your car by sound and feel, without a tach and a light, maybe you should stick to driving an automatic. #3 is when you open a hood and it looks like a box of Crayola Crayons puked in your engine bay. A single accent color is okay, but having a red distributor cap, yellow wires, blue hoses or wire wrap and every other color of the rainbow in there just looks tacky. #4 Flowmaster mufflers, again, this is a belly-button mod that every Tom, Dick and Harry out there thinks is so cool. Is it any wonder why you can go on Marketplace and see a ton of these used mufflers on there? They are annoyingly loud and after 5 minutes driving your car with them on, you will wish you had something else on there. #5 is smoked anything (headlight or tail lights). If you think you are going to intimidate people with your "murdered out" look of smoked lenses, think again. It's just looks cheesy. #6 is tires that stick out beyond the lip of the fenders. Having a wider contact patch with those wide tires is great for hooking up, but if your tires stick out beyond the fenders, you may as well be driving around in one of those ricers that do the same thing. Buy a proper set of backspaced wheels and tuck those tires in. #7 putting anything other than a Ford engine in your Fox. Self explanatory, Ford in a Ford is just proper.

i agree with you, and i think my biggest pet peeve is the one piece headlights and those ugly euro tail lights. to each their own, but those two have to be the worst. Also hate seeing GT turn down pipes on an LX, you want turn downs, keep it under the cars rearend, or cutting the pipes off a 2.25 or 2.5" tails and welding on 3.5" tips but seeing where the transition from the small tube starts from side view. Now am guilty of having to have tips welded on, but only cause i was sent the wrong tailpipes from Borla and they wouldnt fix the order and this was 25yrs plus ago, so i just had the turn downs cut off and new 2.5" slash cuts welded on...

I bought a carb swapped 89 GT with the AOD. I asked why and was told by the previous owner that the H.O. 5L Blew so he swapped in a 351W. After I got it home and went through the car only to realize I have a 84 "hipo" 5.0. The previous owner said the car was much faster than EFI it was his uncles car and unk went to jail sold me his baby for canteen. I have dead gauges inside my Fox and the kid was playing with the carb and timing so now I gotta do my best to bring it back to par. Does anybody know how I get my gauges back working oil pressure, Temp, RPM?

All these circuits are in the black and grey connectors beside the master cylinder. Very easy to figure out.

I hate how people used to start with a nice original 5.0 and then turn it into a gutted out race car. It make ZERO sense to do that. They could have saved some money and bought the same car but with a 4 cylinder for 50-75% less and then made that into a race car and saving an original 5.0 in the process. If you're going to swap all the original engine, trans, suspension, interior, etc. for race car crap there is NO ADVANTAGE to starting with a 5.0.

my pet peeve is hood pins and cowl hoods on any fox that has less than 600hp is mickey mouse ..in other words a huge waste of money and time and destroys the look of the car , cowl hoods are meant for hood clearance and light weight for racing only and not for cosmetics , ive owned and raced my fox since 1991 which i bought new and i am able to drive on the street and back n forth from track which car runs mid 10 seconds and 126 mph and i still have my original hood and my car still has all its original body and interior and original paint and it looks like new

My worst...lesson learned...dont install a body kit that is not made to fit your car..never again.it will look good when its done.but yup.i f#$ked up. Cut and add 4 inches length to front sides and shrink 2 inches in the front..never buy a used kit.

One piece headlights are trash in every application. None of them look good. If you disagree it’s probably because you have a one piece headlight looking face. Go buy some jdm garbage and sell your fox to someone with taste! I agree with the hoods/hood pins especially when it’s strictly for looks. Body kits are a personal preference...as long as they’re done well (hung, painted, aligned etc).

1. body kits on coupes are worse than a prostate exam on groundhog day. 2. unless its a special edition, a rare color, or super low miles, STOCK SUCKS 3. cheese grater and euro taillights are effing hideous 4. one piece headlights blow 5. hatches\fastbacks have ALWAYS been the better looking mustang, since 1964 6. its a perfomance car, lets not make it a grandma car 7. LS swaps are for lazy, cheap, chevy guys. 8. if it dont make it faster, its not really neccessary 9. if your fox is a legit fast street car and not a poser, after market hoods are fine 10. Shelby stripes on non Shelby cars is just dumb. 11. rear tires sticking out, big meats are cool but damn, get the right wheel offset and mini tub it if you have too. 12. not every foxbody needs a black interior 13. super low profile tires, useless 14. 14" gold Dayton wire wheels, useless 15. 2 racing seats are ok on a legit fast street car

Old video I know but I have to add my 2¢, A/C delete and rear seat delete are the dumbest things ever, ever! Don’t do it! Also agree with everything you listed and second the EFI delete. Basically don’t delete and or go backwards. Also don’t make it a ricer, no body kits and don’t lower to a stupid level where you can’t even drive it normal. It’s American Muscle, treat it appropriately or just buy a Honda, lower it so you can’t go over a speed bump, put some stupid graphics on it, some LEDs, a fat can, and big stupid wing.
