Batman was a character who was meant to be for everyone as Bob Kane even stated "Batman should never be only dark and serious, as he and many superheroes were created to be slightly campy, all-ages characters, with stories that adults and children could simultaneously enjoy for different reasons. Batman The Animated Series is basically how he should be represented as Batman is suppose to be a character capable of having all kinds of emotions he can be a dark vigilant while also being fun to both watch and read about. Batman is also capable of laughing, smilng, and crackng small jokes. Writers today seem to take too much inspiration from Frank Miller's version who is far from the Idealistic character.

Adrian Castillo How do you figure? Grayson was an acrobat, Todd was a street urchin that tried to steal Batman's tires. His dad was a crook that Two-Face offed before he ever met Batman, Dick Grayson's parents were murdered by Tony Zucco during a performance that Bruce was attending. The problem was that he was too different. He was hot headed, arrogant, violent, and reckless. Little known fact, Jason Todd was originally a red head. Batman had him dye his hair so that people thought it was the same Robin. This is later revisited near the end of the pre-New 52 series when he was partnered with Scarlet.

Batgirl isn't a surrogate sister to Robin. She's Commissioner Gordon's daughter who just also happens to work with Batman to fight crime. That would be no different than having a romantic interest in a co-worker, which while frowned upon by management and HR isn't creepy or inappropriate.
@endorbr7 жыл бұрын
Sonny Joon That's why I said co-worker and not your boss. Just for accuracies sake joker did not rape Barbra in the Killing Joke. The author Alan Moore has said he did not and it never said the did in the book or following books. Important detail they should not have assumed on. The animated movie implied differently but that because Brian azzarelo wrote (the adaptation) it and he writes most his villains that way... but even with that the producer bruce tim said no to it. This is beyond stupid. When it comes to fiction writing "inappropriate" is not a thing. You can't limit creative freedom. I tend to enjoy disturbing fictional scenarios that delve into madness or is a metaphor to a point. And to say "Batman is a kid's character", think you don't realize that at the time most of these comics were written, was when a majority of kids did not buy comics. After comics started putting in more mature topics, like tackling drug problems, they successfully got rid of the Comic Book Code Authority and they could not sell comics in regular stores anymore. Comics were sold in dark, out of the way, small stores and brought in more adult readers.

Even in The Dark Knight he's got obviously mentally ill folks working for him (fellow who shoots at the mayor, guy who puts the phone in his gut). This is not anything new to the character.

For people who claim that they like stories that feel real, you sure can't handle any dose of reality in your comics. A mass murderer blackmailing a gay cop? Do you really feel the second half of that sentence is the worst part about him? The joker being a rapist at some point? Once again, he is a chaotic mass murderer, why would he draw the line there? If you watched a single season of Forensic Files, you would know how often rape and murder takes place so claiming that someone with hundreds of murderers under crosses the line at being a rapist shows your incredibly twisted perception.

I get the argument for Barbara in the killing joke. The events feel like fuel for another character's arc when it should have been Barbara to get that focus. There should have been plots to how this affected her, how her actions affected others and questioning herself as a hero. Events like rape or sexual assault can be written in stories in the right way. Yeah, there are arcs in comics that probably showed how Barbara dealt with those events, but killing joke had poor execution on barbara's arc

Except that didn't happen in the comics, only in the MOVIE when Bruce Tim told the writer no.

Inappropriate and appropriate are subjective terms. They mean nothing unless they are being spoken from a certain point of view. The point of the question was to ask why judging culture as "inappropriate" can exist. Nothing happens in the past or future. Everything happens in the present.

DC Comics has what I call "Superfriends Syndrome" - the compulsive feeling that they need to overcompensate for the cheesier elements of their history, usually by making overly violent and sometimes inappropriate stories.

Nothing wrong with the Killing Joke it hits kinda home in what Batman was supposed to be a dark and gritty story with horrible people and also she wasn't raped. The Joker came in and shot her in the spine then took the pictures. Same with A Death In The Family it did a great job portraying that Batman lives in a fucked up world. Would be nice if you actually took your time to either read the stories or read up on them at least.

The Killing Joke didn't actually have the joker rape barbara he had only stripped her down and taken pictures of her writhing in pain to imply rape when he hadn't actually done anything after shootign her to drive the commissioner insane with anger
