It's annoying how people at some point started to call horrors with guns "survival horror". I would expect dead space to be action horrors and ones where you can't fight back survival. Cuz you just try to survive, not kill.

It was a term coined by resident evil 1. Since then it's still been a really good description. You fight the horrors by any means necessary to survive, whilst managing resources and health with puzzles to complete. Whether it be by shooty shooty bang bang or running away and / or hiding. I agree it can be a broad term. But it's better than making a new genre every time a game does something new, unless an earned title like "soulslike". Even though you could make the argument that the soulborne games are also survival horror. Dead space 1 is 100% a survival horror the ship feels like hell in reality in some points and in others you really feel the grim reality isaac is faced with dealing with. Dead space 3 is the action shooter as it is meant to be played in coop taking a lot of the suspense out of the atmosphere of the game. The start of 3 shat me up when the dead guys first pop up when you are in the prologue. Then it wasn't scary at all when me and my buddy where playing it. We where laughing at each other most of the time getting gripped by the meat. Good Times.

Dude above me made a way more in-depth comment but basically boils down to risk and resource management being the main hallmarks of the subgenre. Player vulnerability/helplessness is another, but that doesn't require not having a weapon at all

@@hungg4469 i can't say you're wrong. It just always seemed off to me to. Probably basing it on: fight - action, flight - survival.
