The most unsettling thing about Bloodborne, like with many of the more sophisticated takes on cosmic horror, is the ways in which the eldritch beings and humans are actually similar. Malevolent humans and monsters do exist in the setting, but much of the tragedy stems from people (including the monsters), groups, and organizations trying to survive, develope and reproduce/renew themselves in a meaningless world. After all, the power to distort reality into dreamlike layers doesn't mean any of those layers are meaningful or will even go your way.

Honestly, I have a love-hate relationship with the FO4 twist. I do like it because it's a cool twist overall, but I also don't like how it was handled. Like the way you manage to track down Kellogg because he was traveling around with a young boy is fine in isolation. But the explanations from the real Shawn later on that Kellogg has stopped aging due to enhancements from the Institute, the boy was a synth duplicate of Shawn, and the reason this was done was to test the Shawn duplicate synth as well as leave a trail for Shawn's parent to follow later, all felt like really unsatisfying BS. It felt like the sole reason all that stuff was there was to create a way to throw off the people who had guessed that Shawn was already an adult before the protag wakes up from cryo. It all felt like it was just a really convoluted way to hide the plot twist that ultimately made the twist feel underwhelming once you real stop to think about how much this story was manipulated by Shawn and how much he had to go out of his way to make it happen.

There are actually four different types of dad that Harry could've been: The abusive dad, the drunk dad, the weak dad (where basically everyone shit on him and nobody really respected him), and the family man dad (where you were actually a pretty awesome all around guy and caring dad.) I think we can definitely tell the kind of guy Falcon is because of the endings he mentioned :p

Soma's ending reminded me of the Star Trek transporter dilemma. There's a theory that every time a character goes into a transporter, they actually die, and what comes out the other end is an exact copy with all their memories. It's technically "you", but from your perspective, you step into the beam and that's it - your life ends, and your clone lives.

It’s open to interpretation. Maybe we’re getting a montage of him aging normally. Or maybe time IS speeding up for Mono. Or, perhaps Mono isn’t actually “growing up” but rather is getting transformed into a monster in a similar way that Six was to her monstrous self (with the fact that he looks more “normal” being purely coincidental). We also don’t know for certain that there’s now a time loop happening, or if Mono is just replacing the previous Thin Man and time remains linear.

I think the interpretation of the end of Little Nightmares II is actually expected and on brand... If you play through the extra levels in Little Nightmares I you realise that Six is actually not a sweet, innocent child and with the actual ending (depending on how you play through), Six ends up taking the Hotel Owners place... So yeah, children grow up to be the scary adults that freak them out in the end. It's a great series with some really interesting underlying themes that give you a LOT to think about.
@Kumagoro42 Жыл бұрын
There are no extra levels in Little Nightmares. You might think of the DLC, but that's set before the end of the game and doesn't involve Six. The end of Little Nightmares is fixed and it doesn't depend on the playthrough, Six escapes the Maw after acquiring the powers of the Lady. Yes, the idea is that both Six and Mono (which are part of a group of six kids btw, more on them is found in the comics) turn into monsters at the end. But Six is a survivor, she's ruthless because she has to survive in that world, like a child soldier. Mono is doomed to become the monster that forced Six to become a monster. Six doesn't betray Mono, Six realizes who Mono is at the end because she sees him without the mask for the first time (after Mono removes his hat before fighting the Thin Man).

It’s so old school that you folks might have covered it in a long ago video, but System Shock really had a pioneering plot twist moment. SHODAN was a nasty piece of work.

"It shows you images of where you live. Not where YOU live, but..." Now THAT would be freaking unsettling. I would disconnect from the internet, burn my computers and live as a hermit from then on.

SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

Superhot’s ending absolutely infuriated me. Stupid ‘Funny Games’ “you’re the REAL MONSTER” twist.

Manhunt's got a great and unsettling plot twist too. It changes the tone of the game quite a bit too. Interesting list. I've only played Dead Space out of all of them listed. Cracking game. Shame the series went down hill like a giant turd after that...

I feel the compulsion to state that, in Spec Ops: The Line, it's not a hallucination. It's a flashback from an unreliable narrator. You weren't hallucinating --- you were trying to search for some possible rationale for why all the horrible things you ended up doing were done. And it's a lot more comforting to think you were searching for him because he was doing these things than to think you were doing these things while searching for him.

Not an acceptable list if Bioshock isn't here.

Bioshock is on the majority of these lists. It’ll be fine.

There are 2 more endings in Spec Ops, 1: you manage to kill the rescue team, and 2: you surrender when they show up.

I laughed at the end of SOMA. It pretty clear if you pay attention that you are not the original. You are a digital copy and you're trying to upload a cache of copies to the satelite. The protagonists rage that he's still there at the end is so funny cuz the chick that giving you orders is like "Duh!!"

I've played through Nier and Little Nightmares 2 so many times already I find it difficult to believe both released earlier this year. Also, If we get a part 2, I expect to see BioShock (I'll let you pick which one, since you can't really miss).

Unsettling plot twist from The Turing Test, which is a fun puzzler: You play as an astronaut (or similar) that gets help from a computer program investigating an AI that went rogue and wiped out a colony. The twist isn't technically that your helpful companion was the twisted AI all along, oh no, it's that YOU were always playing as the AI itself, and the AI has figured out how to control minds. You were trying to find the last survivor so you could take them both out.

In Soma, at the end, there are FOUR Simons! 4!! The original who gets scanned, the 2nd who plays most of the game, the 3rd when you get "transfered" to another base (this is the one who's stucked at the bottom of the sea at the end) and 4th the one who gets uploaded into the digital paradise 😮
