The burning house scene from The Sacrifice reminds me of an old, old joke from back when Cecil B. DeMille was shooting his massive, epic movies. The story goes that he had a scene of a whole town blowing up and since the production could only afford to do it once, he had three cameras set up to film the big event. If all went well, he'd have three different angles available to get the most drama out of the scene as possible, but in any case, he had triple redundant coverage in case of mishap. The day arrives, everything is set up and DeMille shouts, action! The pyrotechnics went off as planned, the sequence was everything the director could hope for, and he was quite pleased, so he contacted the first camera crew to ask them how things looked from their perspective. "I'm so sorry, Mr. DeMille. Just before it all went off, someone tripped and fell into the camera. We didn't get it." DeMille was disappointed but he still had two cameras in place, so he wasn't worried. He contacted the second team. "Oh, Mr. DeMille! It was a gorgeous shot and everything worked perfectly, until..." Oh no, he thought. "Tell me." The second team said, "Well, it was the darnedest thing. There was a big piece of debris from the explosion that headed straight for our position. Everyone was able to get out of the way, so no one was hurt, but the debris hit the camera head on and destroyed it. Whatever film survived was surely exposed and ruined." This was quite a blow, but DeMille reached out to his third team: "Team three, tell me you got that!" The reply came back. "Ready when you are, C. B.!"

With the Blade Trinity they missed an important detail: she shot the arrow through slot in the protective barrier that was only 2 by 2 inches. That's a really impressive shot from 40 feet away.

Jessica Biel fired from 40ft away and 50ft above the camera which was boxed in with plexiglass to protect it and the crew, except for 2inch x 2inch window for the camera to shoot through unobscured ... and she shot it dead centre through this hole and the lens ...
@jeffmansfield91410 ай бұрын
The main thing keeping it from being really impressive is the fact that, obviously, she wasn’t aiming for it intentionally. So basically, she ended up by pure happenstance hitting the one spot she was trying not to hit.

Imagine the rotten luck of being know as the destroyer of iMAX cameras and you go to make a movie where damage risk is minimal and it breaks DURING A LOVE SCENE!!! Insurance companies hate him. Hopefully now Nolan sets aside a few mil budget just for iMAX destruction.

A year before A Clockwork Orange came out, Dario Argento threw a camera out of a window to depict a character falling to his death for The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. The camera broke, but the film was recovered. I think the actor survived too.

Kinda surprised not to see The Fast and the Furious here. The set piece stunt of the Charger launching over the other car was captured by several cameras, one of which was on the ground as the the inverted muscle car slid directly into it. Not a particularly expensive mishap (digital camera I believe), and the shot does appear in the final cut.

I assume that if the film were to be unusable after those mishaps, he probably wouldn't have as much clout due to the bad publicity. As it is though, he's making them a lot of money both through buying replacements and making them sound more durable

What’s the deal with no outros anymore? It’s super jarring and annoying how WhatCulture has taken to dropping outros on all their channels and just end every video without a thank you or even a little flourish of personality. I guess Jules’ kindness and well wishing got out of hand? Too many complaints? Since there are other creators that do the same and maybe it is a popular new way to end a video and I am totally in the wrong, you other subscribers can troll me if you wish. I just feel no outro is so unappreciative toward the subscriber. What culture?

Arrows aren't "fired", they're shot, released or loosed. To 'fire' a weapon implies some form of ignition, which you get in cannons and guns.

Wait, IMAX cameras are _NOT_ digital?! How can this be? Digital sensors equaled then exceeded film resolution ages ago. And if they are still film, how can that cinematographer possibly say that a digital camera wouldn't have survived where a film one did?

Too damn much Christopher Nolan. I've only seen one of his movies, and haven't care to see any others since. HALLOWEEN II (1981): The climax involved Donald Pleasence setting off explosives to kill Michael Myers. The story goes, somebody accidentally used too much explosives. At the far end of the hallway, the camerman SAW what was coming-- and RAN. The huge fireball completely destroyed the camera. Miraculously, the film was intact, and when it was developed, they could actually see the lens MELTING just before the camera stopped working. The sheer insanity of HALLOWEEN 4 was, after all that, "Dr. Loomis" survived with only some burns, "Michael Myers" was in a coma for years, but "Laurie Strode" had been killed in a car accident between movies. WHAT??? Despite that opening premise, H4 became my favorite in the series, and it's infuriating that they threw all that potential away with the next 2 films in a row... and pretty much every installment since then.

Biel shooting the camera is technically only impressive archery if she meant to do it. If she wasn't aiming at the camera itself, and just happened to hit it, then she kind of sucks, right?
@button911 ай бұрын
she was told to aim/shoot at the camera but just did it too well. I mean, yeah, you could say "if she was really good, she'd miss the tiny hole on purpose" ... but also, she did aim it directly at the camera and got a bullseye.
@Kahli2111 ай бұрын
The real question is - why was she firing a real arrow at a camera with an operator behind it?
@button911 ай бұрын
@@Kahli21 the area was walled off with plexiglass and I doubt they had a camera person right there. it was a stationary shot locked off so I doubt it needed an operator for the moment they were shooting.
