Of all the Star Wars movies you could highligh - the first that came to mind when I saw your title was The Empire Strikes Back. Tonally different, moved the story and characters forward and wasn't simply another "save the princess" or "defeat the evil villians". Our "heroes" actually "lost" in this one, which was a pretty bold move!

My favorite thing about Saw II, given the ending they used, is the fact that John comments more than once that Daniel is “In a safe location”, and not one single person in the room is hearing it; Daniel is IN A SAFE LOCATION, Jigsaw cannot be any more direct and literal, but they don’t understand that’s how Jogsaw works well enough at that place in the timeline to focus on the words themselves

Rebecca Ferguson was so friggn good in Rogue Nation, very sensible decision to bring her back.

James Gunn nailed the end of his GotG trilogy. Only he could have done that, and I'm so glad they kept him on to write and direct.

Hold on... I thought Villeneuve answered the question about Deckard being a replicant pretty clearly: he's not. If he was, he wouldn't be alive for any of the events of the sequel because replicants only had a four-year lifespan in 2019. By 2049, the Nexus-8 models are given an indefinite lifespan, so unless this Deckard is some sort of copy fabricated on to a Nexus-8 replicant--which we have no reason to assume from the film--the only way he could be alive and have memories of Rachael would be if he was a human. This also explains why Ana is capable of living a natural life but also suffers from an extreme autoimmune disease due to her being the offspring of Rachael and Deckard: half-replicant, half-human.

@@erakfishfishfish It may not be implausible, but it's contrived, loaded with retcons and makes for an overall weaker story.

I consider both trilogies master pieces but making Rohan such a critical aspect of LOTR 2&3 and in back to the future not returning to 1955 in the 3rd movie

Being a relative to a legacy character would make sense in a "Skywalker" saga. Changing it to Palpatine, and having every Skywalker die for her, and she gets all their stuff, including their name kind of defeats the purpose of all that came before. Even the TLJ reveal of her having nobody parents was really more of a self own by Mr Big Bad Kylo Ren, supposed Grandchild of Darth Fn Vader, who was trying to diss a woman who beat his trained-by- Jake Skywalker, and highly experienced in combat- lordship in a duel with light sabers the very first time she touched one in combat. Some people just gotta simp for the Palpatine Saga.

I love that Gamora and Starlord didn't get together in the third GOTG because it pretty much disproves all the whining about there being no consequences to death in the MCU if they bring a character back. She, much like Loki are not the same people as the ones who died and the ones who the other characters are mourning.

The Dark Knight Rises, The Wrath of Khan. This whole category can perhaps be subtitled, "Sequels that were better than the original". Others have mentioned "The Empire Strikes Back".

Actually 4 of the movies you mentioned avoided making the same mistake only to make bigger mistakes. Christopher Reeve's Superman broke the model giving us a 4 part story (fifth Brandon Roth had to cover) that carried on and didn't rehash the same story each episode. Predator 2 tried like Aliens but fell flat not bringing out a good concept trying too hard to mimic the first. Many others before mid to late 1990s after that Hollywood got lazy.

The title is poorly worded. Maybe it should say something like "10 Movie Sequels That Avoided Mistakes Seen in Other Franchises," "10 Movie Sequels that Brilliantly Broke the Rules," "10 Movie Sequels That Went in a Different Direction" or something along those lines.
