I went hungry many years ago. Decided it wasnt gonna happen again. I became a food hoard. Before I knew it was prepping. I may not get fresh foods but I can eat for at least 10 years. My goal was for 5. There is only me and I eat quite simple. God is good.

I believe that for my little family (9 year old daughter and dog), our greatest prep item has been our 1 burner stove. When Hurricane Milton came through and we had no electricity, I had no means to cook for us. The VERY next day, we went to a local Asian market that was opened, and we found the stove and bought it. I thank God for it. As long as his provision is in our home, our bellies will not hunger.

Hi, Barbara. I understand what you mean about being regarded as a “prepper” because of the “doomsday” or crazy connotations associated with the word. However, I hate to run out of the things we need or use frequently. I was so well stocked when COVID hit that I didn’t have to worry about the things we needed. “If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready!” [The quote is from my 20 year old goddaughter with her put together self. 🙄 ]

@AGardenersJourneyHomesteadАй бұрын

@bradlaffertyАй бұрын
Great presentation, professional and enthusiastic! The thing with quinoa is to wash it 3-4 times before cooking to remove the outside covering of saponins. Thus gets rid of the bitter taste. Then cook it in a broth to add flavor. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes after cooking and it will not be a pile of mush! Dress it up with nuts, veggies, meats etc. good luck!

I just started preparing a month ago and have purchased so much food. Because it’s just me and I’m not a big eater, I could probably last two to three years or more without having to go to the store. Well maybe not because I do need fresh fruit every few days. I’m from a large family, with children and grand children and siblings that I could share with. I do want to make sure I have enough for my children and grandchildren and to be able to help others. I’ve purchased so much and have planned another visit to Costco that the self doubt is saying, the food might go to waste. My space is small, with water consuming a lot of it.

I just started prepping due to me loving to garden. I believe I have a years worth of food. I don't know if you said non fat dry milk and the Nido whole milk that is in the baby formula aisle. I do freezer meal in a bags, I can my own food and use jars, mylar bags for long term storage. How I know is I use 5 gallons buckets for storage such as flour, sugar, beans, oats even coffee. I even have my bad habits such as coffee and chocolate soteed in mylar bags with oxygen absorbers. Oh and I dehydrate my own fruits and vegetables and make my own egg powder. Make many powders from scratch such as onion powder and paprika. Many stables from scratch such as cream of chicken. Make my own broth from scratch. So ain't stay busy, lol... Thanks for the video and sharing!!!

I'm glad that KZbin brought you to my attention; I will be going back to see your last one. The problem is that "Prepping" and "Preppers" have been vilified by many in power to keep us from being self-sufficient. It is mixed with "survivalists/survivalism" which is wrong. I always had extra and have seen us through power and water outages,layoffs, unexpected expenses, illnesses/injuries, unexpected guests, family needing to move in suddenly, and then, quarantine. I did a 6-part blog series on family emergency preparedness more than 10 years ago. I did not know the word "prepper". When the pandemic hit, I never stopped going to the stores, and I was shocked at the shortages I saw and heard of. I looked into what in the world was going on and that is when I showed my husband and we got into 'prepping' big-time. I learned to pressure-can a few years ago just to stock up meat. I have laid in lots of grains for diversity and because one of my sons must eat gluten-free. Buckwheat and quinoa are complete proteins on their own, unlike rice and most other grains. I make stove-top stuffing with quinoa and other grains and seeds. I cook quinoa and often barley(not gluten-free) with vegetable broth, or chicken broth, and add cooked carrots, celery, onions, whatever you like, and can add meat if you want. (I sometimes add meat that has been cooked in herbs.) I make them also in a crockpot with spice, (cinnamon, nutmeg, whatever you like), and add dried cranberries,(or raisins or currants), honey, and nuts if you want. It makes a nice treat or a side dish. I have potatoes, instant potatoes, dehydrated potatoes, and some canned. Frozen potatoes dehydrate beautifully, as do frozen mixed vegetables. We can't all freeze-dry, but we can mostly dehydrate. You have in everything I have. Thank you for pointing out canned beans; they take a long time if we are low on water or fuel. I would add LENTILS to the "Bean" list because they are great and cook quickly. I would also add small (pastina) and thin (Angel hair) for pastas also because they cook quickly. Dried and canned milks, dairy and non-dairy if needed. It depends on how many people I will end up taking care of, but at least a couple of months with the most people coming. I loved this video.

Hey from Arkansas!!! Girl I love your channel, I just found you when you did that last video. I think something that would be good to have is cinnamon. For me, I recently started getting into meals in a jar. These meals consist of both dehydrated and freeze dried ingredients. They also involve just adding water to be prepared. So far I have jars of chili and taco soup. Im working on adding more to my pantet! If i had no power, these meals could eithrf be made on my wood stove or on my portable camping stove. If I could not leave my house for awhile, I feel we could definitely eat well for at least a month, possibly a month and a half, and maybe even more because it's kind of hard to say.

This was such a great, informative video! I did "raid" my local farm markets before they closed and am trying CORRECT long term storage oF winter squash, onions and potatoes. I created a space in a dark appropriate area and bought some Amazon shelves. I figure I'm going to eat it, freeze it or can it as the months go on. I have to be gluten free so those flours are hard to find and expensive, I really do need to look for some sales and read about longer term storage for them since I think some but have different requirements

Great video! Keep them coming! As for your reluctance to call yourself a prepper, I wouldn't worry about that. Just because there are people doing it with the wrong motive or spirit, doesn't make it wrong. I think we as Christians (especially SDAs that know what's coming), we NEED to be prepared. Years ago when I was living upstate NY in a country setting, I got into couponing and was able to get items cheaper and some things even for free in bulk. It felt great looking at my stocked pantry knowing that we had food and non-food items in bulk. Today, I am not prepared sadly. But, I need to get back to it. Some things that I would add to this list - I'm not sure if you mentioned that nuts can make milk. Also, I would add salt (so obviously you can season your food). Also, what about bottled water just in case you didn't have access to water? Also, one time in NY we had a hurricane and we lost power but we had a grill and cooked the food on the grill. So, maybe having a grill on hand with some coals and lighter fluid would be beneficial. Having a wood burning stove is also a must! -Monique
