Wonderful. I’d like to see a jeweller show how to use the mixed gases torch please. No one shows the ease or complexities of using acetylene and Oxygen. +ROMINA ROMO I'm happy it helped, my mini torch is a smith's mini torch. I got that torch on ebay for around $135 - $150. If you get one make sure to get at magnetic older for it, it is very handy. The tanks I got at a local welding supply store for $200. The regulators and tank holder was another $200, but it came will welding end and a cutting torch. I dont remember what website I got it from. I suggest looking around for the regulators and tank holder.

Very similar things you didn't mention essential to me. Flex shaft for the dremel. Radial brush discs from 180 to 2000 grit which replaces all other buffing and finishing tools. MAP gas torch to melt silver for casting (and the butane micro torch works for everything else hah). Wide oval black colored crock pot for pickling long pieces and can see through lid. Brass work horse hammer for punching, Heavier nylon hammer for shaping around mandrels. Nylon tipped pliers, parallel closing jaws, v-jaw, wrap and tap. 180mm diamond files 40 - 600 grit flat. Ultra wide file or sharpening stone for evening large surface area. Clamping double screw tightening bench pin. Standard wide bench block. Kiln brick(s) to heat on (put two next to eachother and you can anneal 2ft long pieces) (break one in half and put on a cast iron nacho skillet = your soldering station no mess and can rotate).

Hello.. thanks for all the useful tips.... I do have a question.... I just purchased really nice (used) anvil stake and a few mandrels that have been sitting in storage for awhile. They are beautiful and smooth however they have a little surface rust on them. What would be the best way to clean and re-polish them without using harsh abrasives or wire wheels?

I have that same problem with my mandrel, hammers and other tools. So some of my tools I just use a wire a steel wire wheel on them, but if it was something I needed to stay smooth I used a brass wire wheel to get a lot of the rust off. The brass will not hurt the steel tool. Some other tools like my mandrel and graver tools, I use a buffing wheel and polishing compound to get a very smooth clean finish. I hope that helps. Make sure to test it and try it in a small spot so if it messes up the tool it is only a small spot. Let me know how that all goes and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

+margie max They are very helpful for cutting flat and perfect angles but I don't use or have one. If you have the money and feel it would make your life easier, I would say get one. I do just find with pliers and a file for what I work on. Let me know what you end up doing.

I use my $50 miter jig a lot. I make a lot of bands though, usually 15 at a time so it's nice. I have worn it down a bit but it still works great after 100s of rings filed on it. Now i've started doing split shank bands so it's not needed, but for wide flat full bands it's really essential.

I am an absolute RAW beginner in making jewellery, so I freely admit that this may well be a daft question, but I am also a firm believer in the old adage "how can you find the answer, if you don't ask the question", I would like to know the answer, so I'm asking the question. Is there a way to make a chain WITHOUT soldering the individual links ?. I heard that someone had managed to do it, but I have no idea whether they were just yanking my chain, but after several attempts I have thus far had no success in finding any mention of it. Can you please help ?.

Well, this would depend on what kind of chain your are making. If it happens to be thicker you really don't have to solder the links shut. But if you are dead set on closing up the rings you can always try to fuse them but this isn't easy. Here is a video showing how I can do it using a Smith's little torch. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2HFcmx5iN6hetU I have heard that is can be hard to do with sterling silver but I haven't had any problems with it. If you can give it a try with some 16ga round wire.

The second 'file' you picked up is a rasp, a tool for hogging off large quantities of material, not at all suitable for jewelry making. You had at least two there. Reserve these for rough shaping wood, soft stone, like soapstone, and well cured plaster. Charcoal block is good, but since you have acetylene, find a piece of scrap, metal strapping and bend and weld a tight metal band on the sides, which will keep the charcoal block from splitting and being ruined too soon. Wire wrapping will work too, but you have the tools to do better. Use your Dremel to cut off the tip of your 'ruined' pliers so they are useful again. Also, buy some diamond saw blades and value pack diamond bits from H.F. for cutting stones. You can also find ball pein hammers there, to modify into cross pein hammers, using the Dremel. You can also use the Dremel to make patterned hammers for chasing. H.F. has low cost tumbler, sonic washer, and polishing grits, which you can use to clean-up the surfaces of your anvils and chasing hammer, for less pockmarked beaten metal. They also have rouge for polishing. The small H.F. torch will work for simple wire works, such as putting a ball on the end of an earring hook or on the ends of round rings. You can, if needed use it to anneal silver and solder silver and gold, as well copper. If annealing, I recommend a H.F. visual thermometer, so you don't over heat your work. Look for a 20-25% coupons on-line or sign-up for mailing list and you'll receive these on a regular basis, each month and special sale date. You can use your phone to show these, instead of printing out copies. They also have basic dapping block, with bits and a good hole cutting block, also with correct bits. Definitely use 25% coupons for these, which come out for most holiday weekends. Lastly, get one of their locking pliers and use Dremel to mod. jaws for wire pulling. you'll have to make your own wire pull plates, or buy them, but they don't cost a lot.

Have you tried a good propane torch? or butane torch for that matter. I have the same model and it absolutely sucks for this application in basically every aspect, but I also have a good one that works quite well. You could probably just get away with oxygen propane in the smith torch too.

You can only use the oxygen propane setup with the smiths little torch. I use just the normal plumbers propane torch for a lot of my work and it does work but you are limited on the size of the piece you are working with.

@@GomeowCreations yI'm saying that you can get regular Plumbing torches with larger and much hotter Flames, I prefer the BernzOmatic ts8000 that don't require oxygen but are still much better than the plumbing torch you displayed in the video which I also have and bought for its small convenient size, but it is completely night and day using these torches for casting or soldering even though they work on the same principle. If you get a big enough propane flame that will put out a lot of BTUs compared to a really tiny acetylene Flame. when you say you can only use oxygen propane with the Smith little torch do you mean other brands of oxy acetylene torch don't work with propane because I thought they all did, or are you just saying you can't use oxygen in a plumber's torch. I was just wondering why use acetylene and oxygen instead of propane and oxygen, just kind of seemed Overkill for jewelry.

I was saying that you cant use oxygen with the plumbers torch. I do know that I could use propane with my little torch but I like working with the acetylene. When it comes to basic soldering you can used a cheap plumber torch all day to get work done but you can't do fine work with them or do any kind of casting. I guess mapp gas would be a good/cheap middle ground so you can do some small amount of casting.

Here is all the info that the metal has on the tag. PLAT STL-SHT (26GA) 12"x24" 1904 H# 11180 This metal is thin and I only use it so I don't burn or damage the work bench. I have hammer on it but you have to use a bench block or an anvil.

You can get a Dremel at just about any hardware store or online. I believe that I got mine at Home Depot, but if I would have known at the time that getting a flex shaft hanging motor was about the same price and 10 time better I would have done that. I really like the foot control and the hand piece on the flex shaft. As for the bits, I get them mostly on Ebay. I will give you links to everything in this comment. Torch Options: This is the full set-up that I have - amzn.to/2JQHQ3p but it's $730 and you'll need to get the tanks filled for another $80. This is a cheaper option and you'll be able to use the same smith's little torch - amzn.to/2taw49H but this is still about $300 and you'll need to get some cheap disposable O2 and propane tanks for under $10 each. If money is really tight this will be your best option and this is also my first torch set-up - amzn.to/2K27Rw9 you can get this end for under $20 and get the propane for under $10.
