I know no one will read this, but; i remember my sophmore yr in hs i was at a house party, it was a quad kegger and some college kids brought their guitars and a drum kit and tried playing some live music. No one was feeling it for their tallent wasnt quite there. One of my close friends encouraged me to hop on the drums and give a demonstration. I had a few beers and got on. I laid a mild funk beat down hotting some.ghosy notes amd tripplets with the base, while i was playing i felt a tap on my shoulder with a random guy holding the mic giving me the "keep it going" hamd signal. Skinny white guy. He started rapping and it progressed into a hip hop/funk progrssive song. Everyone gathered around and the party went NUTS. Man, i was only 16 and shouldnt had been partying, but if i hadnt, i wouldnt have those memories. We created a vibe that was pure and ill never forget it. These beats are important to lesrn if youre lesrning drums. Funk/jazz beats are KING. Edit: i was also a self taught drummer. I started in 2nd grade and taught myself by listening to the music. I didnt know how to read music, and youtube wasnt quite a thing yet.

I love it Jeff! Fantastic that you’ve been exploring a lot of funk lately. And you’re so good at it. The cool thing for beginners/intermediates, is funk sounds amazing, and it’s not ridiculously hard to play. I encourage all beginners/intermediate players to attempt Jeff’s funk lessons. You’ll be jamming away in no time, and having a blast on the drum set! 🥁

Nice beats, definitely inspired the Stank Face! I love a good funky groove, having grown up with Parliament Funkadelic, Earth Wind and Fire, Larry Grahm and Grahm Central Station, and a host of other funk greats. A couple of these were less familiar to me, but most of them I play already and I agree they are great beats. :-) Thank you for sharing.

Gotta say I love your content that being said I have some constructive criticism. Play the groove longer. Can’t learn the beat with you talking over it after 2 measures. You are very informative though and still should commentate just let us hear the beat longer! Or even slow it down. Just some food for thought. Keep killing it!

I wanted to offer as well, (oh no not another offer), I actually learned drums playing with a bassist to a James brown rhythm section book, consisting of drums n bass...so most of James browns beats(he was a drummer first,,) were the first thing I learned on drums, and I gotta say, you could do worse...talk about open and closing hh's,phew, every song even with rim shots

stank face is to music, as laughing is to comedy; that is to say, it is a leftover instinctual reaction to stimuli from centuries ago, similarly laughing is the "we are safe" noise humans used to make after we we startled or threatened.

You nailed the funk out of this subject. I am a funk drummer at heart. I agree that the 16th note is one of the hardest to keep smooth and in the pocket. "When I'm kissin' My Love by Bill Withers and Cold Blood both do a nice job with the 16th. By the way, I've opened for Cold Blood a couple times.

Wonderful playing and so damn funky you really put the time in to nail those beats. What I would love to see is the fills/phrasing and stickings you use to go with this types of grooves perhaps you could do a series on that? A bit like you did in the beginning of the video when you were playing that swung groove and then adding those little swing fills in that keep the momentum of the groove going!
