Daniel, I remember seeing the broadcast of “ The Night Stalker “ in 1972. ABC Movie of the Week “. It was a BIG deal. The talk of most of High School the next day. I heard people say it scared them to death. One girl-friend of mine said “ I’m *never* walking to my car alone in the dark again!”.ha!! The scene where the police chase Yanos to the pool and fall in was done at “ Columbia/Warner Ranch “. When they close in, you can see Samantha and Darrin Stevens’ house for a few seconds. Also “ The Night Strangler “ the year after. You are right. The television horror-mystery movies made around that time had a certain feel to them. Glad I grew up in that era. Saw ‘ Love at first Bite “ in the theater when it came out. The disco scene with Alicia Bridges singing “ I love the Night Life “ was one of the high lights of the movie. I watched it in a packed theater, there were a lot of laughs.

“Nick Knight” was a fun pilot for a series that later made it to air as “Forever Knight.” I remember enjoying “To Die For 2.” The first “To Die For” wasn’t that good, but I liked the second one. “Dance of the Damned,” later remade as “To Sleep With a Vampire” might be worth a look. “Midnight Kiss” from 1993 was fun. I mainlined vampire pop culture in the 1990’s.

“Forever Knight” did a much better job with the material than “Nick Knight,” particularly with the characters of Janette and LaCroix, which IMHO is a big reason why it finally got picked up. A few of my insights: I never considered the David Warner character in MY BEST FRIEND IS A VAMPIRE as "evil" perse, more like misguided and gung ho about his beliefs about vampires being evil, THE NIGHT OF THE DEVILS, I've seen this dubbed into Castilian and I think the movie might have resonated alot with Spanish audiences because that country has a real huge social divide between urban folk and the rural communities that ties in deeply with the Spanish civil war, countries like Spain, Italy and Mexico seem to have parts of their countries that exist in different time periods as big cities were modern and industrialized while you go to the rural towns and it's still common to get around by horse drawn wagons, in that respect it has a lot in common with Mexico's EL VAMPIRO, that film's hero played by Abel Salazar is a big city doctor who goes to a small village which seems stuck in the 1880s, he's in fact more out of place there than the European count played by German Robles. As for LOVE AT FIRST BITE perhaps you don't realize that Richard Benjamin who plays the Van Helsing descendant was a pretty big comedy star in the 70s, though unfortunately forgotten about by modern audiences. It shouldn't be surprising that the studio would want to focus plenty of screen time on him. As for THE NIGHT STALKER it was based on a now obscure story by Jeff Rice with quite a bit of notable changes, some due to network "requests" and others to make certain characters more appealing to the audience, particularly Carl Kolchak himself who is nothing like he is in the tv movies and series, Darren McGavin plays the character as the unsung hero who even though the system will beat him down he'll still rise to the occasion and save the day, the Jeff Rice Kolchak is a sleezy, down on his luck and drunk reporter who thinks if he can crack a serial killer case he'll be back on top not realizing that the killer is a vampire. The story uses the sleezy underbelly of the Las Vegas nightlife as the background to the story and ABC had some reservations about some of the concepts and characters in the book so they were either toned down or left out of the tv movie, however when the ratings came back big ABC wanted a sequel right away and this time they allowed Dan Curtis a bit more leeway and he got to use some characters from the original story not seen in the first tv movie.

One movie I thought never got enough love was Only Lovers Left Alive. It dealt with how, as a practical matter, a vampire got along in the modern world, what with forensic investigation - you can't just drain and dump people, blood born diseases, depression, and needing to travel any long distances as a vampire. As much as a loved the original Fright Night, I couldn't imagine Jerry Dandridge existing for hundreds of years without EVERYONE knowing there was a vampire living in the neighborhood. Same thing in Buffy the Vampire Slayer; how does everyone in Sunnydale not know there are vampires? Also, add me to the list of people who found Richard Benjamin annoying in Love at First Bite. JAMES
