I feel like the whole question of Dempsey having an advantage was settled when other kickers were able to match (and even beat, in a few cases) his career long, proving that he hadn't done anything that it was impossible for a kicker with a full foot to replicate. IME people just love to claim -- particularly when it comes to sports -- that anyone who makes a major accomplishment despite not fitting the "mold" is somehow breaking the system or having an unfair advantage, rather than acknowledge that they're just good at what they do.

@@Matt-hh2ye I mean, there's no question that kicking with that was *different* than kicking with a regular shoe, but it's less than entirely clear that it was an *advantage.* They've actually done research since that suggests that the larger surface area would actually make kicking a football MORE difficult, not less (because if you don't hit it exactly right, an oblong ball is prone to do something weird, and a larger surface area means less precision).
