They aren't actually ridiculous, though. The last one was determining the value of art in hospitals to reduce discomfort and pain without medication and the attendant risk of dependency. The cows having names thing gives a tangible result to a dairy farmer. The Ig Nobel for cow farts and belching solidly determined that the majority of methane production happens in the rumen, not the hindgut. The whale snot robot allows researchers a way to get DNA samples without needing to approach an animal that outweighs them and their boat by an order of magnitude, and without having to poke the animal with a sharp stick, possibly becoming a candidate for a Darwin Award.
@MariaMartinez-researcher5 жыл бұрын
Also, some of the IgNobel are bestowed on people who didn't make any study, but a notorious action: the Nigerian Prince storytellers, by example. Some years ago the Economics IgNobel was given to a Chilean trader in financial futures who botched a transaction and made the country lose a 0.5 of its gross national product. Epic.

@@Markle2k yup exactly, as the video explained, they give awards to research that makes people "laugh & then think" they're for studies that sound funny & that we can laugh at, but actually have serious benefits as well, or as Maria said, sometimes not for research at all, but to point out crazy things happening in the world, another example of that being the guy that was declared dead while still alive & the problems it caused for him, even being unable to secure a visa to travel to the award ceremony

@malleusmaleficarum60045 жыл бұрын
"Pretty and ugly paintings?" Wouldn't that be a completely subjective variable? That doesnt seem very scientific since I thought the ultimate goal of science is to seek out objective truth. After all, isnt beauty in the eye of the beerholder?
@lordgarion5145 жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, they would ask the patients to rate pictures ahead of time, or possibly use more famous pictures that are widely regarded as one or the other by a large percentage of people in general. I'm not sure I would say completely subjective. While it's true that any single person you randomly ask could like pretty much anything, very clear patterns begin to emerge about what people like when you do groups. And whether they asked the patients or not, I'm almost positive almost everyone that didn't like the painting said something sooner or later.
@malleusmaleficarum60045 жыл бұрын
@@lordgarion514 That's still not very scientific. Science is based on facts and absolute truths, not opinions. Sccience isnt a democracy, just because a large group of people agree, for example, that something is beautiful, does not make it so, especially when it comes to art which is extremely subjective. I dont know if you've seen some of the modern art that is floating around today. To many in the art world, it is beautiful, while to many others, myself included, it is ugly and I would hesitate to even call some of the pieces art. My point is that the methodology they used can hardly be described as scientific. I understand what you're trying to say that the art they chose was either widely considered as beautiful or ugly, but neither of those adjectives are quantifiable, they're strictly qualitative, so that makes the results subjective and not reproducible from country to country, or one point in time to another. People's tastes in and ideas of what constitutes art constantly changes. If that were not the case, then they wouldnt have to tailor pick pieces of art that most people find beautiful and would be able to chose pieces at random.
@lordgarion5145 жыл бұрын
@@malleusmaleficarum6004 actually, if they ask the patients which pictures they liked and didn't like before or after that would still be science based on opinion. But if you think that's bad, you should check out the state of medication. They literally have no idea how most meds do what they do. Including Tylenol.
@lordgarion5145 жыл бұрын
@@malleusmaleficarum6004 Another way to look at it is you don't need infinite precision to prove things. Nor do you even need facts for some things. Back to the Tylenol example. The reason it's a fact it helps with pain is because a bunch of people said it did, and not because they figured out how it works.
@lilaclizard45045 жыл бұрын
This isn't really complicated to follow, the scientific question being asked is "does a person looking at a picture they like/consider pretty, suppress pain more than looking at a picture they hate/find ugly?"

Except for the Nigerian Prince, I find them all very interesting. Knowledge is built tiny bit by tiny bit and no matter how ridiculous these studies may seem to the general public, in the end they may add just a tiny little more info to their general field of study. Yes, it's silly trying to ascertain if rats can distinguish between Dutch and Japanese spoken backwards, but it becomes a lot more interesting when we think about it as a study to determine if rats have a sense of rhythm and how they respond to it. Same goes for other animals and may end up having implications and applications we're not aware of right now but may eventually come to fruition later.
