When I was decluttering 'big time' I took digital pictures of unused sentimental items. I also prayed over all items...that the next 'steward of my stuff' will be blessed & have a happy life. Doing these 2 things made & still makes letting go a breeze! ♡

@@AmyWhickerTutor , oohhhh..that is a good one. I have some of those DOOM containers. I will say, most of mine have like all books, all keepsakes from my growing up, one or two filled with photos. Some others are the real DOOM ones with hodge podge stuff in them. I open them up to go through them, just to put stuff back in and close the lid. Probably the whole thing should be trashed. I wouldn't remember what is in them anyways. sigh.....

My mom is a very healthy 87 year. She strictly believes that she can’t let go of anything because she paid money for it. Every surface in her house is used for some type of storage for something. She truly believes she needs everything! She’s one very stubborn woman. She’s even saved all her money and won’t spend a dime for any upgrades for her home. Her home is well maintained and her large yard is gorgeous all due to her hard work. She’s an amazing woman with a lot of stuff. I’m very fortunate in so many ways. I’m grateful for her and just let her be.

I have *definitely* done a lot of organizing clutter. I look at a mess and ask myself, “How can I contain this?” instead of, “Which of these items do I need to keep?” 😂 I am a champion at skipping steps.

Cass, you truly are funny. I get the "adult" cruise issue. We moved to an "active 55 community". I was 65 and fairly active. I don't run but I do like to do things. Well, it was early winter so no one was outside really and when spring came, all you saw were walkers and wheelchairs. All the "clubs" were knitting or sitting exercising. Not at all what I thought "active 55" meant! Good luck with your cruise. I have never been and really don't have any desire to go. I am not an eater, don't stay up late, don't like crowds, don't drink. I like to WALK on the beach and be alone. I also have a fear of being on a ship and everyone is sick.

I recently watched a short from someone I never saw before but I liked what she said. She said if you’re trying to declutter don’t ask “Do I need it?” because anyone can find a reason why they need things and justify reasons to keep things. She said to ask yourself, “Can I live without it?” That made a lot more sense to me. Her logic mixed with what you do would work great together. Now if I can only get through my freeze response from my PTSD. 😢

I think that is a good start however I am hesitant to use that as a make or break in a decision. I guess I prefer Marie kondos "does it spark joy" method better in the sense that as our life and dislikes change over the years I may have bought something that I enjoyed at the time of purchase but doesn't fit my life now. That's not so much that we.can live without it as much as "if it doesn't have a purpose and doesn't bring happiness to my life why do I keep it?!?"

I have kept both these thoughts in my mind and everything becomes easier. “Does this bring me joy to even pick it up or look at it?” And “If I had to move today, would anyone in my home ever miss this?”

Storage bins do not have to be expensive. Free boxes are available from the P.O. While still flat, I covered them in Contact paper from DT. The long, skinny boxes cut in half are the perfect width for canned and bottled groceries in my pantry and keep stacked cans from falling over. I have bought photo storage boxes or clear plastic shoe boxes when on sale for $2.50 each. I LOVE my china cabinet just for pretty things to look at--memories of mine, Mom's and Grandma's. Anything else can be done differently, but don't change my china cabinet! It makes me feel good to look at it, so serves an important purpose.

Thank you for your wonderful organizing videos. I’m hooked on them! I moved into a rental apt 6 yrs ago after 40 years in a home, and have been trying to figure out how to stick with purging, sorting, and organizing ever since. 4 yrs ago I started sorting my piles of paperwork, but had a devastating loss, so now the piles just keep on growing. Last year I made a big dent with my clothes, but got sidetracked with long term flu-like symptoms. With 40+ yrs of paperwork, clothes, jewelry, kitchen pantry, fridge/freezer, dishes, cookware; bathroom toiletries, medicine, first aid, hair, skin, makeup, laundry room, combination guest room/music room/study/catch-all room; and a garage full of boxes & tubs full of stuff all screaming at me, my 71 yr old ADHD brain is overwhelmed. I want to begin (again) and I’m tempted to start with paperwork since I’m afraid if anything happened to me, no one could find anything. I heard one of your guests say it can take 3 years to declutter and organize an entire home and this actually gives me hope. I lose steam by the afternoon, but if I can start & stay focused in the mornings, I’m hoping I can get through the paperwork part. It feels like lions and tigers and bears, OH MY!!!

8:50 Those big totes are actually my favorite organizing bins ♥ The thing is, you've gotta use them right. You touched on the primary mistake in your critique of how they're usually used: they can't house multiple types of things. They have to be specific. In my case, I use them for craft supplies, and each individual bin is for a specific category of supply, i.e. fabric, embellishments, paper craft supplies, wood pieces, etc. And they should always be LABELED with that category on the side of the bin. Beyond that, to keep things organized within each bin, I find that zip bags are the best way to go (either 1 gallon or 2.5 gallon, depending on what you're storing). Zip bags can be labeled easily, and they're flexible (unlike plastic storage containers), which means that as long as what you're storing isn't susceptible to "squish" damage, you can fit a lot of them in a given bin. If you follow the 20% rule (13:41), you can usually find what you want by rummaging around. But even if the bin is so full you have to pour everything out to find what you're looking for, since everything's contained in zip bags, you can just toss them right back in. They don't have to be in any kind of "order," just related to the bin's overarching category. TL;DR You can totally use big bins effectively, but you need to be thoughtful and purposeful about using them. They can't just become catch-all's.

This was a really good video, because it took a step beyond decluttering to talk about organization systems that work to make your life function better. Not Zoning was a very good point; yes in kitchens where dishes should be near the dishwasher and sink and things you need to cook with should be near the stove. You add a video a month ago about "Friction", where you talked about organizing so one removes the obstacles to accomplishing a task. I wanted to exercise more and also be more regular about grooming the dogs, but setting up and taking down for both activities in the same space caused me to not be as consistent at either one! So I zoned a downstairs room for exercising only, with the treadmill set up, and the gym mats in front of the TV with the DVD players. And I moved the dog grooming out to a zone of the garage, ALSO setup all the time. The garage space required me to organize the other part of the garage, and yes, some paint cans had to go to get that done! So not zoning is a big mistake to functional organizing. But for beauty organizing, it also looks better, to! Thanks.

Thanks for the hints, Cas! I love your tips. BTW, building piles, of which I'm guilty, there is a saying where I live (translated from regional dialect): "The devil will always shit on the largest pile." I have struggled a lot on defining the zones in my apartment. Yes, there is one hint I took from Jennifer on the channel "How to ADHD", a video that made me divide my available space into zones. My demise is a set of interests, like knitting, crocheting, beading, papercrafting/scrapbooking/card-making, watercoloring, and embroidery. D'ya have a hunch? Jennifer's video told me about he "point of performance". Where am I doing the craft most of the time? That's where your supplies are supposed to be stored close by. I love knitting, crocheting, and embroidery in my comfy TV chair. Close to the chair is the storage of all the supplies I need for those interests. Card-making and scrapbooking have a shared zone, where the supplies are only a step away from where I need them. Easy access and easy clean-up. Oops, wait, where do you store your machines (die-cutting, paper-trimmer, stamping platform, laminator (or foiling machine))? I have a rack on casters for those, which is easy to move to my work-station. or back into its corner. In the meantime I also have a "landing zone", a place where I put the mail, opened, of course, (invoices, letters, etc). Where I live on this planet I no longer need a car. Taxis and public transportation do the trick, so my key-ring is small, one for my apartment and one for the mail-box. Yet, I'm far from finished with organizing. I see a light at the end of the tunnel, though. Again, Cas, you're one of my supports on YT.

That way, if you feel like laying by the pool, you can, but there’s always nightly entertainment and tons of excursions to go on. You can do so many different things, or nothing at all! Princess was more get up and run. Holland I have to say for the most part is one of those geriatric type cruises but depending on where you're traveling, they have their merits. Retirees who cruise have more disposable income than most people with small children. So, that's a fact of life. My mother took me and my 3 school age kids on a 5 day/4 night cruise after we were all in a major car accident a number of years ago, as part of the whole healing process. (And also because we all could have died and she wanted us to do something special together.) It was lovely. The kids ran all over the ship and called us to say where they were and where they were going next. We left from LA and went to San Diego, Catalina Island, Ensenada Mexico, and back to LA. (The day after Catalina is spent at sea.) We finished off with a couple of days at Disneyland. There were only a few other kids on board, true, but they made friends quickly and hung out with them a lot. We went shopping together on Catalina and took a glass bottom boat excursion, as well as going into Ensenada together but a lot of the time was just quiet, recharging time for my mother and for me. The kids mostly entertained themselves. Disney was where the focus was really on them. It was great. I'm glad we did it. My then-teen (youngest kid) and I were scheduled to take a Caribbean cruise at the end of March 2020. You know what happened with that, right? We ended up getting a Covid puppy instead, as a sort of consolation prize. My daughter is now 21, married, and just had a baby. We won't be cruising together any time soon. If I were to take a cruise now, I think it would be an Alaska one, especially as I live in Vancouver!

Our one and only cruise experience was to Alaska for my in-laws’ 50th anniversary with the whole family. It was a good mix of activity on the ship (RC Ovation of the Seas) and excursions. Our kids (ages 7 to 16 at the time) loved the cool activities on the ship - iFly, rock climbing, North Star, Flowrider and unlimited soft serve cones. :) I liked the excursions more than being on the ship, but the whole experience was such a gift. Within a month, my MIL was diagnosed with cancer, within 9 Covid had shut the border, and within 16 she passed away. My takeaway was to spend time with the ones you love and don’t take it for granted.

A cruise is my idea of a nightmare. It is a floating boat full of a city full of strangers all competing for the same resources. Kinda like "Survivor at Sea.". I don't need organized activities, I am a self starter. I don't need to pay for a cruise to get a massage or attend a seminar. Just not my cup of tea or coffee. Affluent seniors go on cruises because they are the demographic who can afford them. They are the last generation with pension plans instead of 401Ks.

I’m obsessive about organizing and decluttering, but when we bought our current house here in Maine, I was totally intimidated by my kitchen. I’ve always had a large kitchen with a ton of storage. This small house has about 7x12 feet of floor space, and a couple of semicircle cabinets, not well thought out when it was built. But since we bought this house for other reasons than the kitchen 🤣, I really had to find some way to zone this tiny space, still keep the minimalistic feel, and be functional for my baking and cooking addiction. Thank you for so many of your ideas and thoughts on this matter because after living here for 6 months, I was able to really think it out properly. But, I decided to not make big changes for a few months, just to figure out what my new kitchen habits would be in this house. Last week, I ordered and received the bins I needed, organized each cabinet for my “zones”, and this tiny kitchen is now my FAVORITE kitchen I’ve ever had. Thank you so much. PS - I even have empty space on some shelves, and counters are almost clear. I’m giddy!

Labeling those containers is my key, both to remind myself what’s in there and to ‘hopefully’ get items put away in to correct space.

I create containers. My husband empties it and puts things down somewhere. He's horribly disorganized. So he sets up his own system and does the same thing. I greatly limit stuff that comes in. Mail gets sorted and tossed into my paper recycling bag. It helps. Limiting the clothes I wear helps, too. I have very few ingredients in my household cleaners, so 3 bottles is more accurate in my house. We took a dinner cruise for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was fun, and we'd love to do it again. They had a lovely buffet and dancing. The singer was a local girl. I'm 58 and can do the things, too.

I really enjoy your tips especially when our homes in Singapore are small given that we are an island city country. Your tips are so practical and your sunny personality makes it easier for me to be ruthless without crying or hoarding over items that are no longer functional. Love your functional directions in assisting us to declutter our homes, mind, body and soul too! I watched your videos all the time so that I may constantly evolve our homes to be more liveable or when an area becomes uncomfortably full of crap. By the way, I have never been on a cruise myself because I have very little romance with food and thus the idea of being restrained for feasting and activities is not my cuppa…. Thanks a million!

Cass, first off you continue to be a real kick! Secondly, I think THIS is one of the BEST videos you have ever made. The people that follow you and Dawn (faithfully) and have already decluttered need new ideas for better organizing. Although we all know the concept of zones...I love how you showed it in this video. I love the concept of looking at the space and not running out and just buying small organizing containers and then "those" become an issue! And lastly, I'm sure you've heard, but it is a great laugh out loud moment...that the men of the MINIMALISTS call tubs "clutter coffins"! I used to have 25 or so in my spare bedroom, and congratulated myself profusely (HA) at how "organized" I was! Clutter coffins (aka doom boxes) can be/are hoarding, period. Lots of us who have followed you for years appreciate what I like to call de-cluttering 2.0. We are ready for a more sophisticated and better organized look. It is so true, not only do we evolve (hopefully) but our homes are a living thing that need to evolve too! Please keep this concept up! When we see it done with our own eyes...it REALLY makes it easier to do IT in our own homes. You've given me lots of food for thought in the next "PHASE"! Thanks.

Picking the correct cruise line is essential to having a good time. Royal Caribbean, on the Oasis class ships ,will be perfect for you. I have ADHD and OCD, and after 23+ cruises at age 51, I've discovered RC is definitely the best for my family. With ice skating rinks, ropes courses, rock climbing walls, bungee trampolines, Carousels, surf simulators, putt-putt, discos, dance classes, movies, libraries, comedy clubs, theater performances, basketball courts, gyms, water slides, high diving stunt shows, and live musicians, you'll have the time of your life.

I would agree with RC. I've only been on one cruise and my kids were teens so i enjoyed being with them and not needing to supervise them all the time. There were kids but not as many as a Disney cruise would have. THAT would be a nightmare for me. I like MY kids. Others... not so much. And i had considered the Princess or Holland America cruises because no kids, but being with a bunch of geriatrics sounds just as bad. I like Royal Caribbean but i still wonder if there's a middle age cruise.

I think I've made a good chunk of these mistakes. Definitely haven't worked out how to zone my space yet. And yeah, keeping things in place when you're not the only resident is... nope. I had a hard enough time keeping my flat in order when I did live alone. Now, I'm always complaining at my partner to put things back where they live. I'm working on it, bit by bit. Thank you VERY much for the tip about getting a bunch of the same type of bin that can be moved around to wherever. Especially makes sense for renters like us who tend to move at least once per decade and therefore have a completely different layout of everything. A bunch of clear bins in standardized sizes will look good anywhere I put them AND make it easy to find stuff... plus they're one of the least expensive options.

Try one of the ski resorts in summer - affordable, and the weather is stunning. Also, sweat evaporates here! You can get out on one of the beautiful lakes in a kayak or pedal boat. I just hired a professional organizer and she always talks about defining each space and giving it a name. The whole family should know what I mean when I say the "baking drawer" and, by naming it, I'm already limiting what goes in it. It's been really great for me. Each cubby, drawer, and shelf is defined by its name and purpose. My laundry room is also a mud room and baby changing Station. It becomes a drop zone for everything. But we defined each space, decluttered, got the right containers, and VOILA! The space functions now!

Thank you!! I have made soooo many of these organizing mistakes. Grateful that you remind us it is a process. One step at a time... We cruise, but we are older. With kids and cruises, our extended family highly recommend Disney. If you & yours are at all into Disney, so much to do! We usually sail on Norweigen. One of the best kept secrets is to get yourself a spa pass for the duration. It is not crowded and so many nice water therapy things for grownups! Whirlpool, sauna, steam room - there was a snow room on the last ship! On the really large ships (4000+ passengers) they've added recently have amazing on board amenities and tons of activities for kids. (Think racetrack, high wire walks, climbing wall and water slides - not to mention kid zones and kids only "club" activities supervised by crew/activities people.) Add in the "free-style" dinning and the Haven level services, and there are ways to "get away" from the crowds. Thanks again for your videos. Really appreciate all the great ideas.

Cass please read❤: Since discovering your channel a few years ago i have been able to declutter and organize so much better and in a way that works for my husband me and our 3yo daughter. We have a very tiny apartment in south Troy New York which isn’t the safest area, but it’s all we can afford. We don’t even have a car, we walk or get rides from family. Our situation isn’t the best but I’ve found that just trying to update and keep our home functioning well, and finding new homes for things and making more room in our home, really helps make our daily lives better. After organizing/decluttering/cleaning just a closet or room, or section of room each day, has given us so much more room in our tiny tiny apartment. It might not look beautiful or Pinterest worthy, but it works for us for now until one day hopefully we get a home.❤ Anyways, Cass I just wanted to thank you for how much you’ve helped me and my ADHD brain, get my home functioning better and just helped me find positive things to work on for our living situation.
