It's the same reason Ruto is president, he appealed to the common mwananchi by calling himself a "hustler", so people felt like they could relate to him more. Not sure about you but most people come from poverty "streets", thus it feels like one of their own overcame their circumstances and succeeded, that makes them feel like they could do the same too.
