In 2006, I was fortunate enough to be the first person to tell the full story of the US Air Force's CONSTANT PEG - a classified programme that saw the 4477th TES, Red Eagles, fly secretly-acquired MiGs out of Tonopah Test Range during the Cold War.
My book Red Eagles: America's Secret MiGs became a best seller and was put on the Air Force reading list: www.amazon.com/Red-Eagles-Ame...
In 2020, I have the option of telling the story again, this time using video footage never seen before.
Please like and subscribe if you'd like me to do so.

Own several books and even that DCS campaign you wrote for, but never made the connection until rewatching this video today after reading Red Eagles! Now it all makes sense...

Most be wild to fly an enemy jet for the first time :). I know DCS is a sim, but I was never a helicopter guy but DCS came out with a KA-50 full 3d clickable pit. I was very impressed with how the Russians made this chopper work as a single seat. On some systems they are backwards from American systems, but they get the job done. Cool to get an insight, as I grew up during the cold war and all Russian was "crap", but we were fed that stuff and Russia kept all under raps (no airshows etc). I knew of captured Russian jets but have never heard the stories, very cool :)

Hi Adam. A great deal of reverse engineering was done. In my book (Red Eagles: America's Secret MiGs) I tell the story of the reverse engineering of brake pads by an American company - when the new components were delivered, they were found to be perfectly manufactured *worn* brake pads... In the squadron's later years, the MiG-21s it operated were J-7Bs purchased direct from China by a CIA front company. I believe that they also purchased a large spares package. Even so, they were still reverse engineering parts for the FLOGGERS.

Wow, a Mig-27. Quite remarkable they got ahold of and were flying that type. That makes the known, captured aircraft now: Mig-17s, Mig-21's, Mig-23's, Mig-27's, Mig-29's and SU-27's. Pretty much covers every Russian fighter flying today, so we know its secrets. Yes, there are various other Flanker evolutions but still.... I can't imagine the Russians have a sister program. Imagine them flying captured F-15's 16's and 18's, along with F-22's and F-35's. Crazy...

Yes, I have seen two photos of a Su-22/17 taken in the early 1990s over Groom. I don’t think it was a secret that the Air Force acquired them from the former East German Air Force.

had to look twice to make sure what I am seeing is real...well done Steve D. Now all you need are a few stories from Paco, Buffalo, Rookie, Morgenfeld, Heater and Black. You just got to be quick before DoD come down on this like a ton shit 😉. If this is anything like your book then certainly worth promoting even by the Church of England...coming to think of it interviews with the 4477th's customers would be mighty welcome (Snort, Manfred etc). Would have loved to have asked His Holyness the Archbishop Hoser to contribute, but I am afraid he's bugged out of earthly engagements (not before sneaking out a few apocryphal sentences about fighting Red Air several times mostly probably in the pre-4477 days). The fact that the US was able to procure Soviet aircraft during the Cold War is direct evidence why the US needs to be extremely selective as to which countries it exports advanced technology. Merely being an 'ally' is not adequate. Many other geopolitical factors need to taken into account, otherwise F-35's and more will wind up in potential adversaries hands.

American aerospace engineering has long been peeling MiGs and Sukhois open like tin cans even by the 80s. The broke and starving engineers at Sukhoi couldn't crank out a stealth fighter if their government had all the money in the world.
