I am probably weird guy because I like scales 🙂 At least the progress is visible. Thank you for bringing up this book. I checked the books and normally I would prefer book indeed (I use books as tokens -- I put given book at keyboard to remind myself what should I practice), but in this case like reprints -- i.e. blurry notes, shaky text, etc. My guess is publisher does not hope for some special money so they do not refresh the typesetting in any way (it is even true for books first published around 1980-1990). I have few books from "Schirmer Performance Editions" and despite the content is super old, they made music sheets afresh, so they are laser sharp. For now I think sticking to just pdf file is better option until someone will step up and set it anew.

The book I have looks pretty sharp, but the print is kind of small.

My piano teacher told me I had to keep my fingers on the keys my little finger 5th finger would always lift up. I noticed your fingers lift as well. I gave up doing these and stopped taking lessons years ago. I never saw anyone actually play these. Thank you for sharing. I am going to try this again

Don't give up! By the way, if you ever watch a video of the famous pianist Vladimir Horowitz, you'll notice that his fifth finger lifts up, and even curls up! That doesn't stop him.

Hi, thank you for doing good work! You've already answered the question down below but this is very important for me. I've also the same issue with the 5th finger lifting up. I'm mainly a self-taught guitarist for 15 years and habbit of practicing hannon etudes with lifting my pinkies made me quit practicing etudes on piano because several teachers said it's very wrong. But i've practiced quite a bit so its muscle memory now. What would you suggest on the matter?

Relax your hand. Let your arm hang loose at your side so your fingers naturally curve into a rounded shape. Avoid straightening out your finger. Straightening your finger after lifting it uses different muscles and is extra effort. Keep your finger close to the keys. You don't need to lift your fingers very high unless you're releasing notes. Align your arm. Make sure your arm is aligned behind the finger you're playing. For example, when playing your fifth finger, shift your arm so your elbow changes position. This can help you put more energy into the note. It's great that you're seeking advice to improve your technique. Breaking old habits can be challenging, but with dedication and practice, you can make adjustments. I should do a video on this subject, since it seems to be a challenge for many piano students.

That's a common problem, even among advanced pianists. Keep working on it, and you'll get those hands to play together!
