Speaking as a beginner, this is the most useful, practical advice.I’ve found on chord inversions. Jason is an inspirational teacher because he doesn’t patronise his audience or try to convince us that boring and extremely limited exercises are, in fact, fun and useful. But he also doesn’t demoralise us either by pretending that technically difficult exercises are, in fact, easy to master. He’s obviously really thought about how to make these exercises fun and doable but he doesn’t dumb it down. He just teaches what you need to know without expecting the student to tackle complex rhythms, finger gymnastics or theory. This is a masterclass in how to teach……not just piano but any subject!

I reckon most beginner piano players wouldn’t realise how valuable these exercises really are. When playing a song it’s much more interesting to change a chord into its first or third inversion and then back to the chord 1, most beginners would play Chord 1 four times instead of varying the same chord slightly. In addition….learning the inversions like the back of your hand can’t be emphasised enough….it’s the difference between a smooth player and choppy one.

Here is my take on learning chords/voicings: Practicing with the Circle of 5ths/4ths or chromatically Pros: Systematic Learning: Helps you understand the relationships between chords and keys. Technical Proficiency: Builds finger strength and dexterity through repetition. Foundation: Provides a solid theoretical foundation. Cons: Monotony: Can become tedious and less motivating over time. Lack of Context: May not always show how chords function within a musical piece. Learning Chords via Songs Pros: Contextual Learning: Shows how chords are used in real music, making it easier to understand their function. Engagement: Playing songs you enjoy can make practice more fun and motivating resulting in a deeper connection to what is played. Musicality: Helps develop a sense of timing, rhythm, and musical expression. Cons: Complexity: Some songs might be too challenging for beginners. Inconsistency: May not cover all chords or progressions systematically. What are your thoughts @jason?
