I have some plugins already and wonder if you think they are good alternatives for retro 90s techno-trance, (vinyl loudness): bx console Focusrite SC, bx console N, bx Limiter True Peak, bx masterdesk Classic, bx subfilter; All the TDL free plugins; Ozone 10; NI Komplete 14 FX including Transient Master, The Glue compressor, Bitwig stock FX. I also have hardware like TC Elec M3000, Lexicon MPX 1, GSI Specular Tempus, Focusrite voice master and Compounder. Would I be wasting money buying the stuff you recommend in this video?

TThe Kotelnikov plug in is one of those plug ins that I kind of forget about for a while from time to time, but then when I see it or remember it, I'm always blown away by what all it can do. It is really a neat tool and feels like it is doing something really unique that I don't really get out of any other plugin, but I'm sure there is other plugs that will do it, but I'm just not familiar with it.

Nice list quite similar to mine, I would add Softube Harmonics and Tube Tech smc2b or Drawmer 1973 if I want multiband and for electronic music masterbuss it is between Shadowhills class A, Vertigo VSC-3, Softube Bus processor and Unisum compressor for me usually.

Great plugins can solve problems elegantly, be subtle and Wow! in ways that many cheaper can't. Newfangled Audio plugins are a great compliment to Fabfilter. Saturate is a great clipper. I use SSL suite especially 4KB, drumstrip, Plate, Fusion, Flex verb. Relab LX480, Shadow Hills too. Sonnox inflator for mastering gain. I don't use Waves plugins any more. Tx for this video.

Do you know if there is a plug-in that shows you the unused frequency ranges of your whole mix? Like it analyzes the whole mix and says these are the areas you haven’t filled up, which then helps you pick your next sound that will pop. And then maybe after finding the frequencies that arent being used the VST will have some suggestions like “ you have room for a punchy snare or some bells that are metallic” like based on its knowledge of popular sounds. This is probably a fantasy scenario lol but I was just making sure it wasn’t already invented 😂

What exactly are the advantages of mastering at 96 kHz insteand of 48 kHz? Does it dramatically enhance audio quality in a meaningful way? The only time i tried 96 kHz was to hear if it would be better than 48 kHz in an amp modeling plugin. The 96 kHz did sound richer an livelier there than 48. Mostly likely because the IR with a higher sample rate reproduces the filter curve of the cabinet with more fidelity. But that filtering stage is so intense that can definitely hear the difference when played in solo. But can you hear the difference in a dense mix? Also in the Pro-L section maybe if soft clipping was used to tame the transients and bring out more of the rest of the sounds, it could probably go louder without too much distortion on the master channel. Metric AB: the only Plugin Alliance plugin that never goes on sale because it's probably the one they sell the most.

As far as SSL strips go, while I really like the Brainworx versions of the 4000 E & G and don't see a huge difference with the ones from SSL themselves... Something about their 4000 B strip is just absolutely insane on drums, not sure if it's the more vintage saturation or the compressor behavior (which is closer to the bus comp than the E/G etc channel comps apparently?), or both, it just has that grit that makes the others sound very clean in comparison. Doesn't work on everything obviously but when it does, ooooh boy!

Thanks mate, really appreciate it! SSL comp for the win :P To be fair, the glue comp in Ableton is a fantastic version of the SSL bus comp (not the channel strip). So that could also make it on my list.

Metric A/B is really helpfull, it goes on sale every now and then, so check for when you have the pennies and when it's at a price that suits you. It is not an essential but it saves you a shit ton of level matching and routing, in order to get useful comparissons. it's really well worth having but at all 'costs', don't pay full price for it.

Most of these are great, But Shadow Hills. Nah. completely disagree. It's simply a visual nicety only. Brainworx just aren't good at analog modelling, I might even go as far to say they are worse than Waves. it sounds nothing like the hardware. I used to have it on UAD and its terrible. Flat, lifeless. It was because of that platform that highlighted how poor it was, usually analog modelling products on their platform were pretty well done, and brainworx's shadow hills attempt just stood out like a sore thumb, clearly far below par. its just lights to look at and nothing more. You're not joking when you say subtle, I challenge you do a double blind test on those transformer models even including a bypass signal and I bet you can't identify a single one, OR the bypassed! In fact just analyse the signal path yourself. you'll see those harmonics are a good 60db down , completely masked by every musical signal except the most quiet , audiophile , smooth jazz recordings maybe. As for it's behaviour as a compressor, even a digital one, bleh. Far too slow for EDM, its just a better track bypassed every time. The reason you are using less than a db of compression is you've convinced yourself it's cool to use, but in reality that's literally the max amount that sounds acceptable on this unit, again try a double blind test (properly level matched) where you can't see the lights bouncing and you'll find its a better mix with it bypasses every time. It's kinda fine for averaging slow dynamics like ballads, jazz, classical. But even then you'd just reach for a Fairchild every time if you want that slow/ glue/ flavour.

Strange, I had the same feeling about the "normal" version of the Shadow Hills. Pretty underwhelming. But they somehow did a better job with the Class-A one. But that might be taste :)
@xSh4dowNinja10 ай бұрын
You’re probably driving it too hard. Set the reference level to -6db or something closer to your input level and see how it sounds then. I usually can hear the difference on a blind test even with 1db of compression (1-2db is usually how much you would compress on a mix anyways)
@BuzzaB7710 ай бұрын
@@xSh4dowNinja no that's my argument. you HAVE to drive it to get anything at all out of those transformer models. The harmonics are a good -60db when the input is full scale!!! Its the most polite , digital sounding analog machine ever! (like i say , nothing like the hardware) FYI I've been a professional engineer for 15 years and I'm listening in a good , floating room on OG Adam speakers i've known for that length of time. I know when my eyes are fooling my ears.
@randydarklight10 ай бұрын
He addresses something very important: "I don't want that analog hiss". The better wording would be: avoid "analog hiss" with plugins, because there is no "analog hiss" with plugins. With plugins, it's digital noise. A sad attempt by developers to sell digital as analog. If you want real analog hiss, put a few more $ into the 500 series from SSL. It's 300-400$ more than plugins but you get quality.
