Charizard isn't Fire/Dragon because that type combination would have been too powerful in gen 1. Think about it. as a Fire/Dragon type, it would 4x resist Venusaur (and the Grass type in general) and lose its 2x weakness to Blastoise (and Water in general. Dragon resists Water, so Water would be 1x effective against a Fire/Dragon type). With the other two starters' typings the way they are, there would be no reason to choose the other two, since their types don't offer an advantage nearly this good.

Alright, I'll give some insight on some of these: The starting birds are partially normal because they're normal birds, that's all Jynx is Ice because it is based on the Yuki-Ona, or the Japanese snow woman Solgaleo is based on the lion eating the sun in alchemy, symbolizing the purification of matter. The steel can be explained by the association with gold.

Gyarados was actually going to be a water/dragon type but they changed it to water/flying for the sake of balance. A water/dragon type (before gen 6) is only weak to dragon, but in gen 1 Dragon Rage is the only dragon type move. Since Dragon Rage only does 40 damage even if it's super effective this means that a water/dragon type in gen 1 would technically have no weaknesses.

Gengar makes perfect sense to me. The poison type was supposed to be the "evil" or "dark" type in gen 1 and that's why the evil teams had them. GameFreak couldn't just change its typing in gen 2 because it's such an iconic pokemon.

Galarian Weezing is Poison/Fairy because the entries say that it was suffering from the pollution in the past so badly that it transformed into a new form that purifies toxic gas, so its stinky emissions are now sweet-smelling emissions that are purified air. So Galarian Weezing loses its resistance to poison that normal Weezing has because it evolved to purifry polluted air. Charizard: They sort of fixed the dragon issue with Charizard's X mega evulution, which is Fire/Dragon. Gyarados: Yes, no sense, and it also makes zero sense that Gyarado's Mega Evolution. It's Water/DARK. I mean, it makes a little more sense because Gyarados looks mega-evil in his Mega Evolution, but they dropped the ball. Birds: Gamefreak makes all of the birds Normal type because they birds are animals and all animal Pokemon are Normal types. At least they realized their mistake in Gen 8 - Rookiedee and Corvisquire, the standard birds of Sword and Shield, are PURE Flying types. Psyduck: The reason it's not Psychic is because its Psychic powers, in lore, can't be used unless it suffers extreme migraines.Watch Season 1 of the anime. Of course, they should have made GOLDUCK Water/Psychic since it says that Psyduck evolves when it can harness the power of its psychic powers. Jynx: I dunno... I have nothing. It's easily a psychic-type Pokemon but, yeah... I got nothing. Lucario: "What do you suggest? Rock/Fighting? Orichalcum is usually also considered to be a crystal in some JRPGs. Lycanroc: I think Gamefreak didn't want to change types of one form exclusive to one game. Gengar: Because Dark-type did not exist in Gen 1. I agree that they should have removed the dual typing for Gengar. The thing that got people mad was that they gave Gengar the Levitate ability in Gen 3. At least they replaced it in Gen 6 with Cursed Body so it is weak to Ground-type moves. Also, if it was pure Ghost, Alister would be so much harder to defeat because of G-Max Gengar. Solgaleo: We will continue to whine and whine but once a Pokemon's types are set, it's impossible to change them. :(

For #7, why bird Pokémon have normal typing is because of the move “roost.” Roost’s effect is “Heals up to 50% of maximum Hit Points. Flying-type Pokémon are no longer Flying-type for the rest of the turn.” So if a Pidgy were to use roost, it becomes only a normal type for the remainder of the turn. So yes, if a Pidgy were to go first and use roost, you can hit it with an earthquake or use a fighting move which would inflict super effective damage. The only pure flying type Pokémon is Tornadus and it doesn’t learn roost.

The thing with charizard being not dragon is the same reason gyarados isn't dragon. In gen 1 dragons were only weak to themselves and ice and the only dragon type move was a move that did a fixed 40 damage. So having only an ice weakness made them overpowered already. To have a fire/dragon would have negated the ice weakness and gave him no weaknesses, and to have that with the final form of your starter, which you'll probably have by around the 4th gym... it's too OP. Same with gyarados, if it was water/dragon it would have been too powerful since the water type again negates the ice weakness, and you could have it by the 2nd gym since it's sold to you for only 500 after the first gym. Sure, there's kingdra in gen 2 but they added more dragon moves that actually do damage
