Adam-Bernard Mickiewicz is the most prominent, along with Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasinski, a Polish romantic artist, poet, visionary, publicist, political activist. He was born in the village of Zaossya, near Novogrudok or in Novogrudok, now Belarus, in the family of a Minsk storekeeper, a lawyer (at the Novogrudok courts) and an impoverished nobleman Mykola Mickevich. The poet's mother came from the noble Mayevsky family. There is also an assumption that the poet's mother came from a family of baptized Frankist Jews.
Although Adam Mickiewicz is considered a Polish poet, because all his works are written in Polish, his origin is still not precisely established. He described himself as a Pole. Some authors describe him as a "Polish-Lithuanian" poet, while others consider him Belarusian due to his place of birth. Having received his education at the Dominican school at the Novogrudsk church of Michael the Archangel, he entered Vilnius University (1815) at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, but soon transferred to the Faculty of Arts. Since 1817, he participated in the creation and activities of the patriotic youth circles of Philomaths and Philarets, wrote programmatic poems ("Ode to Youth", 1820 and others). After graduating from the university, he worked as a teacher in Kovno (modern Kaunas).
