Mmanwu is a traditional masquerade of the Igbo people of Southeastern Nigeria. They are performed only by males in exclusive secret societies and involve the use of elaborate, colorful costumes that are meant to invoke ancestral spirits. Masquerade traditions have a varied range of purposes that span from performing elements of epic drama derived from community cosmology and lore, ushering in new months and seasons, honoring totems and ancestral spirits, enactments of parables or myths, with entertainment and community building serving as a consistent commonality. In the past masquerades also bore judicial, social regulatory, and even policing powers, however though these functions have decreased in modern times.

This report is misleading. Igbo communities do not have any hierarchy of Igbo masquerades. In Imo and Abia, we do not know Ijele and hence do not regard it. There is nothing special about it. From this report it is obvious that the author is either from Enugu or Anambra.

@@emmanuelclifford5727 most parts of Enugu and Anambra have hierarchies in masquerades. And Ijele is at the top and arguably one of the most recognizable masquerades in Igbo land. It is also the biggest Masquerade in Africa.

You mispronounced Ekpo. It’s called Ekpo not Ekpe. Ekpe is in a different category that is performed by members or the cults. It is only those that are familier to the cult that may stand in its way otherwise you risk being mercilessly flogged if you fail the to response to any of its code hand gesture. I am from Arochukwu and I know this because I have participated in both. Ekpo is generally for entertainment while Ekpe is used for final farewell to prominent chief and also a member of the cult.

This was done within the scope of someone who is only familiar with Anambra State and environs thus it is not representative of the entire Igbo nation, What he referred to as Ulaga is generally known as Mmanwu Also you can't talk about Igbo masquerades without talking about owu/okoroshi of Imo State, and Rivers state Also what u referred to as Ekpe, is actually Ekpo Ekpe is different, more generally known as Okonko Lastly, ajofia is a specific individual masquerade, it is not a masquerade category In conclusion, the work done is mediocre and not well researched
