I remember paying £299 for mine at launch in 1996. That was without any games. Going from a Sega Megadrive to this is probably the greatest leap in gaming quality there ever was in regards to consoles. Not just graphically, but also the audio. I have another early PS that I paid £25 in it's original box which I have refurbished and now works like a dream. While the debate is still out that the early 1001/1002 models produce superior audio, mine certainly sounds excellent and on par with my PS4. Dare I say maybe better!! Waiting on my copy of Silent Hill coming as it's probably the game I remember most, but don't remember completing, although quite difficult to find for sale in good condition these days.

Nintendo only "stabbed Sony in the back" due to the fact that they didn't realize the deal they reached with Sony would actually net Sony more money per game sold on CD than Nintendo would make, and this would include first party games Nintendo would have made on the format. Nintendo actually felt that Sony were trying to stab them in the back, so they pulled out of their deal without warning and instead approached Philips. Seems like no matter how you slice it, all that was really needed was better communication.

I can remember when SNES and Megadrive where having the big console war (yes I'm that old...). And it's funny that Sony won that whole thing and is pretty much still king
@TheJaBuLs5 жыл бұрын
@Merchantrouge84 Sony still did great during that cycle. It started out rough but currently the PS3 and 360 are sitting right at 84 million consoles sold each so not too bad considering how far behind they were and the fact they had to compete with the Wii at their launch AND the 360 had an entire year on the market without competition.
@TheAlphaOmegaX35 жыл бұрын
@smokehead 69 Nah their were reasons. Really good reasons why they backed out. "Sony got the rights to create and sell CD-ROM software that would run on the Super NES-compatible machine, which it called the “Play Station.” It wouldn’t have to pay Nintendo any royalties or get its approval for CD-ROM games. This meant that if developers and consumers did embrace CD-ROM gaming on the Super NES, Nintendo wouldn’t get a dime off any of those game sales-only the hardware sales. Why would Nintendo allow this to happen? Maruyama said it was because Sony “explicitly told them we were going to focus on everything but video games.” In other words, Sony’s position was that it would make encyclopedias, home karaoke software, and other non-gaming applications using CD-ROMs, and leave all the gaming to Nintendo. But apparently this was not in the contract itself, and once the ink was on paper, Sony had carte blanche."

I have one, and it does sound absolutely amazing connected to some good speakers. I remember back in 1995 that it did sound that little bit different to anything else . Very unique sound. I'm not sure how intentional this was by Sony as it was just a gaming console after all but it certainly appears to have some fine tuning to the audio chip. I can't speak for the later versions as I've never owned one but certainly not much could touch the original PlayStation for sound quality back then. Not without spending lots anyway.

That specific swap trick only works on the early production consoles. Later on, Sony added another check to the boot process with the effect that you had to swap the discs over twice at exactly the right times (I.E. local disk -> import disc -> local disc -> import disc) - it was fairly easy with practice, but getting it to boot the first time could be an exercise in frustration.

Another interesting fact that may only be known to PlayStation owners in Japan and UK, was that you can buy a kit to make your own games called Net Yaroze, all you needed was a PC with an internet connection and the Sony Net Yaroze software development kit, which came with a black region free PlayStation. In the UK if the game was good it would be on the demo disc on the Official PlayStation Magazine UK. There were some good games that were build using Net Yaroze.

The scratch and sniff discs weren't ever meant to be scratched, but rather, the smell was activated by the spinning of the disc in the slightly warm PlayStation, giving your room a smell that is associated with the environment of the game. I still have physical copies of a lot of PS1 games. Titled include: Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, Silent Hill, Siphon Filter, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7 & 8, Crash Bandicoot and the first and second Tomb Raiders. But, no Playstation original to play them on anymore. Only reason I kept the games all this time is because my grandfather and I tag teamed all those games and beat most of them together, passing the controller back and forth. He was good at puzzles and I was good at taking out baddies. We would spend entire weekends playing video games together.

Most of those games are worth decent money these days! Silent Hill was my favourite though!

Still got my PS1, sprayed it gunmetal grey. also have an ace scart lead with extra audio out, which i made a tradition of getting for any console that supported it. Gotta love that kick-ass CD quality audio. And had Connectix VGS and remembering it working a little bit and Bleem! for a while.... Also i've ordered the PS1O from Australia that mimics the CD drive allowing you to play your games from a SD card "personal backups" i might add. I think I shall repaint the console though

In the early 2000s my dad,my uncle and I played Spider-Man 2000 and Street Fighter Alpha 3. From time to time I watch as they tried playing the dualshock version of Resident Evil. In 2012 I got the Playstation back and still to this day I am addicted. I grew up with Playstation as a kid,I didn't have that many titles back then,now I keep my collection growing.

1:11 We've had brick wall limiters for a long time. One of the albums widely considered as kicking off the loudness war is 1996's What's the Story (Morning Glory), only one year after the US release of the PlayStation. There's nothing to stop a PlayStation disc from using a loud master. Also, CD audio is excellent, but not the best. 48K audio also existed at the time. Take a look at DAT. Are you confusing audio compression with data compression?

I still play some PS1 games... on my PSP. Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX specifically. But you could get some great games from the PS store, install them on your PS3, and them "port" them to your PSP. Wild Arms 1 & 2, Harvest Moon (which I will admit, as not aged well), and a number of other classics are out there. With the Switch, you can get a lot of those same games, on a better machine, but they are pricey again. I think each of the FF games cost me $7, or so. They are upwards of $20 now. I would love if they re-released Brave Fencer Musashi on a new console. I'd play that like it was my job. Anyway, thanks for a great video!
