Thank you so much for your very helpful advice. The last question made me laugh, but access to the local shop is so important. Excellent video.

Brilliant list Maggie - thank you. One of the problems I've come across is actually getting an email in reply from many agents!

I came to Ireland in 2003 with my partner who is Irish by birth. We spent six months looking to buy a property and there was a Lot Of derelict places about; But they were being sold as building sites because there was an old derelict habitable building there . The auctioneers were pushing that at the time, it was still the tail end of the Celtic Tiger. (At the time perpetuated by the EU) . Eventually we came across a house that was a price we were happy to consider, and duly visited it with the auctioneer. Well it was a complete mess! The owner had done some alterations that defied gravity! He’d decided to extend upwards to downwards, an upstairs bedroom extending out with no support below! Then there was no toilet facilities or sceptic tank. Half way through the viewing the agent got a mobile call. Somebody else wanted to buy the place for fifty five thousand euros. We said let him have it. During the following days the auctioneer rang to say the buyer had pulled out and asked if I was still interested. I was. At fifty thousand euros, where I started and he said that the previous offer had been fifty five I had to bid that or above. I went on to sixty then he rang to say he had sixty three! I pulled out! I heard later it got sold for forty five thousand! Don’t trust auctioneers! :-(

Hi Maggie, which websites do you recommend when searching for property?
@CheapIrishHouses3 жыл бұрын
hi there! the big irish portals are really great to see a cross section of whats available, so myhome.ie, daft.ie & property.ie. After that, once youve narrowed down to a locale, then look for local agents with smaller independent websites.

Very good video thanks so much. As soon as travel opens up we hope to be able to find our farm in Ireland fingers crossed. And these sure will be handy. Would love to know a bit more on the buying process in Ireland I have had a few people say to me that in Ireland some longlist relative can just show up and claim the house you are buying; is that true?
@ruairithomson69153 жыл бұрын
No. Not really in any difference from any other country and a half decent solicitor will tell you if the seller doesn't own it. Plus you can check the portfolio online yourself. Landdirect.ie if my memory serves me right
@CheapIrishHouses3 жыл бұрын
hi there! once you hire a solicitor and get them to do the regular searches, they will usually spot any red flags. they're an integral part of the process for a very good reason.

Internet Electricity Or did I miss that ?? Or are these silly questions to be asking in a property like you are talking about ...
@CheapIrishHouses3 жыл бұрын
hi greg! these are relevant of course. the electricity thing is mentioned in "how old is the wiring". getting an answer to this will tell you a lot about the electricity too. when it comes to the internet, its a great question but not necessarily something an agent, or an owner will know. a lot of these old houses have never had internet & even those that do, have speeds that vary wildly based on the supplier, so its very hard to force a reply on this from an agent. hope this helps!
