I definitely ghost creators I don't watch anymore because I've never felt an obligation to them? I suppose I've never assumed they knew I existed or cared because they have plenty of other engaged people, usually. On another note: One thing I've done to help my sanity when it comes to consciously consuming content, is that I will unsubscribe and just search for them if I'm interested in checking out what they've been up to. But spoiler alert: i usually forget about them pretty quick! I can honestly say your channel is the one I've resonated with most, and have been more engaged than ever. Thank you so much for exploring these topics with us! I've unsubbed from everyone else haha 😂
@Alexas.nobuyyear26 күн бұрын
Yes I also tend to ghost rather than try and engage in thoughtful dialogue, there does seem to reach a point of size or "followers" where a creator doesn't really seem likely to consider my comment - although as I've spent some time on the other side now I do think that they are much more likely to possibly see the comment, than I initially used to think. Upon further reflection I realize too that I am here in part to actively examine my consumer habits and reflect publicly, which invites these conversations with others and sharing personal experiences... whereas many other creators are out to entertain or educate with authority, and their communities may not be as directly interactive. I have a couple of upcoming conversations that would not even exist without some of the nudges/ideas from people's comments, it's really sparked some fascinating topics (to me, at least)! Also - same with unsubscribing, and reminding myself that I have the ability to search if I want to check in! I'm honored to engage with you here 😄

@@Alexas.nobuyyear you are so right - lots of other creators do not offer content worth engaging with; they share and entertain and most of the comments end up being surface level praise for the content. Thank you for offering such unique perspectives and questions and engaging with us! ❤️

That might depend on size of the creator and interaction. I think there's no point in telling Joe Rogan or Taylor Swift that you don't like their content. But if it's someone quite small and you had a lot of discussions in the comments, maybe.

I’ve ghosted creators if I felt I was influenced to consume more after watching their videos. Even if I absolutely loved their content, persona, etc. I don’t feel the need to stay subscribed. I will say I have unsubscribed and resubscribed at a time I felt I was less susceptible to being influenced . It just depends on my current goals and focus. This coming year I want to try my first no buy and focus on health so I did some housecleaning so that I can watch videos aligned with my goals. I’m glad I found your channel!

Ooh a lofty goal - I don't yet feel deserving of the "antithesis of consumerism" title, but I do hope that I at least present more "accountable consumerism" during this first year of reflection - maybe in the years to come I can be a true antithesis as the no-buy muscles get stronger! 😄

This is a very timely video for me. I’ve just unsubscribed from one of my frugality influencers because she keeps praising Temu, most recently in a video following one about how we should look after each other and help the community. I unsubscribed and (politely!) explained why. There’s been an interesting discussion, actually - some commenters support me, while others have asked what on earth people on a budget are supposed to do. Answering that with non-Temu ideas has been quite rewarding. I do find it bizarre that we somehow manage to divorce ethics from spending/banking as if they have nothing to do with each other. Where do we think the interest on our bank account comes from, or our investment dividends? We’re happy to finance things that we’re horrified by, and would never do in our daily lives - but as long as we can’t see it, then it’s somehow ok to get money from it. This is my major bugbear re the whole FIRE movement. At the end you get to be generous and ‘give back’ to your community. But do you give back to those who suffered or died to make you money?
@Alexas.nobuyyear26 күн бұрын
Ahhh! I'm happy to hear that there's been some good discussion! But you're right, it is unfortunate that somehow frugality or budgeting can justify exploitation and unsustainable practices. I guess that's one of the reasons the Sheins and Temus of the world are so successful, despite so many people (a vocal minority?) refusing to shop there. I did see something about how credit card "rewards" are all paid for by people paying the high interest rates on their balances, which makes the thought of "churning cards" just to maximize rewards, seem really terrible, like the people who can afford to do this are really taking advantage of those who are stuck trying to make ends meet and lack the support to NOT have to turn to credit. While I'm firm in issues such as not knowingly supporting exploitation or prioritizing cheap/personal gain over fairness, I also am currently trying to find a balance of financial attitudes for myself as far as "giving" vs. "saving" vs. "spending"... it doesn't seem like there are set rules for how to be a good person in this regard without turning to rules from religion (the 10% tithe), and even just balancing what one "should" do as far as how much to spend vs. save is hard to be totally at peace with for me. I know I did a budget breakdown using some recommended percentages from a financial guy (Ramit Sethi) way back on this channel, but it didn't really get to the heart of the personal ethics of the matter. I think with the approaching holiday season I'm feeling conflicted about the thought of possibly acquiring some expensive gifts, as well as the atmosphere of "good will"/giving, and it's all coming with a host of new things that I hadn't encountered or considered yet 😅
@JehanineMelmoth26 күн бұрын
@ the whole idea of balanced spending (including ethics!) isn’t new, but there seems to be no template out there to follow - no system, no popular bestseller that tells us how to do good with our money as well as be good with our money. We’re all struggling to find a way we can manage and have a good life without doing harm, and it’s not easy.

I also have unfollowed a handful of people,I used to watch all the time. I enjoyed the majority of the content, but when they started showing off hauls regularly, I had to leave. Not that I will never watch another video of theirs, but this allows me to decide if the video is right for me, instead of seeing the constant hauls in my subscription feed. Just like when someone does a closet tour or declutter, I do not need to know what brands people are buying. Let the item speak for itself. You can say this item was cheap or expensive... but that's perspective. What's expensive or cheap to you may not be to others. And while trying to be conscious of my purchases, I am ok thifting something similar versus purchasing that exact item from a retailer an influencer recommended.. As a matter of fact I am trying to not purchase at all, and learn to restyle the items I already own. Those are the content I am currently drawn to at least. I know I get suckesd into unnecessary purchases easily. So it's better to avoid retail therapy all together. I have gotten to the point that I can browse and walk away empty-handed, but sometimes a sneaky purchase will happen. What I am noticing is I am less and less satisfied with those unplanned purchases
@Alexas.nobuyyear26 күн бұрын
This is so interesting because I know that I am guilty of sharing brand info in regards to my own wardrobe or talking about my stuff, partly because it's an identifying factor, and in my case, often an emblem of a period of "influence". But I'm with you as far as trying not to purchase new things (new or thrifted) and focusing on "fashion without shopping". Maybe it would indeed be better to focus on the design aspects of the clothing rather than mentioning brands, going forward! I'd be curious to know if you find it to be different within the context of the chats I have on this channel? I guess when I think about it, it does feel rare to see someone talk about clothing without mentioning brands at all, and brands can come with a whole load of perceptions even beyond the price point. I do also have a video coming chatting about the concept of what's "worth it" as far as expensive clothing, because the idea of what makes something cheap or expensive to people (when budget is not necessarily the only answer) is fascinating to me. I'll be thinking more about this idea, for sure. Thank you for sharing.

@Alexas.nobuyyear Erica Ball and Emily Wheatley( at least her older content) rarely mention brands in their capsule wardrobe creation videos. I have lots of clothing already. I'm learning more about my personal style(words and type) and how to keep my loved items from looking dated. I built 4 seasonal capsules years ago, and they change and evolve. However, I try my best to take care of my pieces and replace items only when necessary and by thrifting if possible.

About rap music, but in France, as I don't know about the situation in the US; in France there was (is?) a division between rap from the North (Paris) and rap from the South (Marseille). Whilst the Parisian rap is more about idiolising consumerism, the rap from Marseille is more engagé, criticising the life on the streets. Probably useless info to you, but I just felt the urge to share when you said "Educate me". Haha! Also, I would love to get some recommendations from you about other channels you enjoy watching atm!

Thank you! This is super interesting to me actually. I'll have to look at different regional rap styles, I know there are distinctive "sounds" but I never really considered the variation in lyric-styles before! I tend to add videos/channels that I'm currently enjoying, to my ongoing playlist of "videos that inspire me" over the course of this year, if you want to check that out! Right now it's pretty "philosophy" focused, and as a reflection of this "consuming content consciously" thing I actually have started to watch less channels overall, and tend to pick and choose the content that feels relevant even from creators I used to watch everything from.

I appreciate your content so much. I used to comment on channels that I was leaving because I thought they might want to know, but found myself being attacked by supporters and once by the creator in the comments. In one particular case, I expressed that I don't shop at a certain craft store. The creator asked why and when I tried to answer it seems my comments were automatically deleted. At the same time the people who support the political stance of this corporation were able to post as many comments as they wanted against me.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I know that I personally do find value in knowing when people disagree with something I share, because often they have a good point! But I also seem to have a community of thoughtful people here who are open to considering different views, hoping things stay that way! I have also found that sometimes comments are automatically deleted by youtube, which is pretty frustrating. It does seem like there is some bias even on platforms where we would assume "free speech" would be somewhat protected 👀

I also HATE those ASMR video I just cant listened. I think the influencer need to entertain me in general and they need to have a point of view. Its also better if i'm learning something and I love those KZbin podcast (Neal Brennan, the financial Diet and I just discovered Las Culturistas (LOVE) ) Finally I have more KZbinrs quitting on me then me stopping following them LOL .... ooops maybe i'm the problem 🤭

So maybe that's why I feel like someone might want to share why they can't watch anymore 😆 ASMR is definitely a specific niche, kind of crazy that it's so popular, I hadn't even heard of it 10 years ago. I'll look into those other channels you mentioned, sounds interesting!

I'm flattered that you consider me fairly intelligent! I also find it interesting to receive this comment on a video where I also discuss projecting as a viewer, what we think creators should be talking about, and how it's a trap we sometimes fall into. I've chosen to "stay in my lane" as far as avoiding politically-charged content on here and focusing on "no buy" and the influences I've been observing on consumer habits. At this time it doesn't feel like it makes sense in relation to my mission of consuming consciously - I know it IS related for some people, some people's personal habits are very much influenced by elections! But it hasn't been a part of my journey thus far and what I do here is very much "true to me". I also respect your right to step away and take care of yourself if frivolity is upsetting to you at this time, so no hard feelings! AMENDED TO ADD - I've just seen one of your further responses to this comment thread, and while I still respect your right to share your thoughts and to step away, and even to make negative comments towards myself as the creator here, please refrain from making negative remarks towards other members of this community. It only devolves the quality of discussion we are able to have here.
