The temperament of the other end of the leash should be considered BEFORE you make that sort of commitment. These people are complaining about training issues. That makes the owner the problem, not the dog.

Old English Sheepdog is a modern name for them and were not bred for herding sheep but for droving cattle on the way to Smithfield Market in London. Their tails were removed at birth to keep them cleaner on the trail and were originally known as bobtail collies. They drove the cattle through the lanes of the day until the herd was settled for the night when they would go off across the fields and catch their food before returning to the herd. The double coat was in the breed to ward against the cold at night. I have kept them since my first in 1972 in the west of England. You will never find a more loyal and loving friend.
@bryanpatrick35093 ай бұрын
I’ve had them since I was old enough to care for one. Currently have four. Yes they were a drovers dog, but historically they were very versatile and were used as flock guards, among other jobs for the breed. Also, the custom of docking the tail was to identify them as working dogs and the custom continued after the tax on dogs was lifted.

I just saw this & had to chuckle after watching you two, er, three. Everything you pointed out is spot on. Oft times when I am walking Echo, my 5y.o. OES, people will either ask me "what kind of dog is that?" (uhh), DUH! and then they will tell me how they'd "love to have one". Every single time I hear this, I start giving them a laundry list of every reason why 'that wouldn't be a good idea', in hopes of dissuading them from following through on that comment. I had a partner in early 2000's who just had to have a sheepdog. I remember thinking, "oh hell no", because I knew I'd be the one ultimately parenting him. And I did... I kept Wiley after we split up. Hey, I did the work. So, I loved & parented Wiley for 13 years. After that, and the pain of losing him, I eventually adopted Echo, who is with me right now until he's lived out his life. Fully spoiled, loved, protected, understood, and just a happy goofy boy. So glad you posted this... I would've said practically the same things. For those still interesteded... COMMIT. Commit before yourself. (Be willing to carry them up & down stairs & when they not able to walk any further in their old age. Sheepdogs are rather heavy. But I did.) Peace, : )

We are so so so very sorry you have to go thru this. It is one of the most difficult decisions you have to make. You have absolutely got it, they are a wee law unto their own. They firstly choose their very own person, then check everyone else out with suspicion. Then once those people are in the flock, they live them & round them all up to be together! They are high maintenance all round, & quirky. But so, so worth having if you have the time, energy & finances for grooming etc.

They were popular when I was a child in the 1970s. Now they're hardly ever seen. I think the fact that doodles are so popular and easy to come by also means that fewer people will go out of their way to buy an OES. Finally, if one loves HAIR - there really are better dogs out there - Poodle & PWD for example.
@ep_bigcameraguy49113 жыл бұрын
I wanted an OES BADLY! but my family has allergies. Sheepadoodle was the compromise but they aren't easy to find either. They are quieter than the OES but they have the strong herding instinct that could make them a decent working dog that can run like a shepherd. Still, love that bear like shape and goofiness that the OES generally exhibits! This couple adores their OES and conversely - am envious but it makes me appreciate my doodle just that much more.

I am a professional dog groomer and still I shave mine down every 4 months as I live in Miami and more so, my 12 and 9 yr old girls are both incontinent. As for the personalities, all totally different. All great with kids and funny. The activity levels varied but none required daily walks. They can be stubborn and too will backup into your lap for back scratchies. As a groomer, I have come across a few unprovoked, aggressive Sheeodogs. They are protective, more so the females. The males are more silly/goofy. I do hope to own another one one day.
