Getting a BA in English has allowed me to teach abroad in Korea, China, Sweden, and Indonesia. With 10 years of very diverse experience (pre-school, grade school, college, pensioners, online, international schools, etc., etc.) I could get a job teaching anywhere in the world I choose to live. I've worked as a writer for a magazine interviewing famous musicians, and my degree also allowed me to commission as an officer in the Army. I've had a fun life, and many diverse experiences that I would not have had without majoring in English.

@@cristinaleesullivan9157 Hello! Fellow student here prepping for college apps :). I was struggling with this decision as well a few months ago. Journalism is great if you're 100% sure it's the career field you wanna go into and you're not going in it for the money. English is more of a broad degree which can be applied to many different careers with varying salaries. I chose English because I love writing/reading but I'm not sure exactly what specific career I want to go into after college. It also pairs well with another major or minor to gain skills in complementary fields (e.g. prospective technical writers would possibly minor or double major in a STEM degree). Best of luck with your decision!

I recently graduated with a BA in English, and I agree that it is absolutely worth it. However, I would strongly encourage any students who are English majors/considering English as a degree path to go one step further to make it a beneficial experience. Get involved in campus organizations where you can use your writing and communication skills (lit journal, newspaper, etc.) and get an internship (or a few). For English majors (even more than for some other majors, I would argue), it is important to explore career paths and figure out what you like doing because there are so many options available. Additionally, the skills you gain through putting yourself out there and trying new things are quite important when it comes to job-seeking. Yes, the classes themselves give you the foundation you need to succeed, but it is up to you to take advantage of the resources you are given. Don't be scared to try new things (you are capable of more than you ever dreamed!) and be prepared to invest extra time into extracurricular activities/work opportunities.

As a creative writing student, people keep asking "Oh, so you're going to write a book?" this is a sign! I don't have a single doubt about majoring in English, but my relatives, mostly, do. they think that taking up Education or Accountancy will give me more opportunities. I don't mean to belittle their opinion because I know that they only want what's best for me but I really believe that taking an English major will make me more competent and will help me widen my vision and such. @Engel-ol5rm
@Engel-ol5rm 5 жыл бұрын
@@infamouscrusader3363 it does though, lets put it this way, someone wants to major in English because they love reading vs someone who wants to major in English for the skills you gain, analysis, critical thinking, communication etc. Someone with that kind of mindset is going to have different outcome because they know what they're looking, they know what they want in the long run and what they want to do with their degree, as opposed to someone who is studying it simply because they like the subject
@infamouscrusader3363
@infamouscrusader3363 5 жыл бұрын
@@Engel-ol5rm If the market does not have a demand for the subject, it's not going to get paid much. Having an Optimist view does not and will not change that reality. Also, majoring in English for the reasons you mentioned are not good reasons either. If the skills are not marketable then they will.not get hired and if they do the pay will not be well and especially if it is a job that has nothing to do with the subject or it was taught at the job. Also, a subject like English can also be self-taught so I believe spending money on learning a subject like that isn't a great financial move.
@Engel-ol5rm
@Engel-ol5rm 5 жыл бұрын
@@infamouscrusader3363 the English subject can be self taught but the skills picked up will not be the same as learning it at school. By the way, I know 3 English majors who currently have above average paying jobs, one makes around 85k, the other recently got a raise to 109k and the other makes 45k, they got the English degree for the benefits and skills to could gain, according to them, alot of the Majors I've seen simply chose English because they liked reading, no one's gonna pay you to read lmao
@infamouscrusader3363
@infamouscrusader3363 5 жыл бұрын
@@Engel-ol5rm Trust me, the skills I have learned, along with many, have gotten the skills outside the classroom. Also, many go into English because they do like reading, but it is also because they they have bought into the lie thinking that all degrees are equal and think their dreams will come true or because they couldn't hack it at the STEM Fields and came to English to get into something easier. As for your examples, they are not exactly credible evidence for your argument since the exceptions never prove the rule and they are more likely Blue Bloods or got their degrees at a time when having a degree almost guaranteed you a job and more likely works in a field that has nothing to do with their major. Today, it is not so and English happens to be the most regretted major now.

I’m a junior in high school and the fact that I have pressure already to figure out what I want in my future such as colleges and majors boggles my mind because of my lack of confidence in what I really want to be. I truly have a strong desire of writing plus reading books. Books is my escape to everything in reality, my happy place lol. This video brought me a lot of reassurance to pursue with an English major considering a lot of individuals undermine the impact a major as this one can be beneficial in the long run. I know this video is from a while ago, but everything you’ve said is so encouraging! I just graduated high school and am planning to attend UMich next year as an English major, perhaps double majoring with secondary education as well. I’ve always loved English, but until this year, I never considered it as something I could really devote myself to because of the typical AP student pressure. While some people demean English, I think that as long as you pursue your passions, you’ll find fulfillment. And I certainly can’t wait.

mari I had to take a 2 year gap period, but I am about to go back to school and struggle w job prospects for an English major. I’ve been working for these two years, and I’ve seen how the economy sucks (especially for some minorities). I’m just concerned that I’m going back to school for the wrong major. I don’t want to graduate and be jobless/poor. I’ve already been poor, and it’s rough. Most of my friends are having trouble finding jobs in their fields (psychology and journalism). I guess my question is how do you decide what’s the best course? How do you weigh your pros and cons and ultimately decide whether to take a risk (as an English major) or pursue something else that you essentially have less passion for? I’ve always been a scholar and a 4.0 GPA ever since high school, and my parents always taught me to have big dreams, and aim high. I’m just concerned that those big dreams are gonna leave me face first in the mud somewhere. Wouldn’t be the first time it happened..... Anyway, I’m getting way to personal on KZbin! Hope you guys are having a great day! Thanks for posting this..it really makes me feel like I’m not alone w this debacle.

My degree in English has given me a strong command of rhetoric and persuasion. This is an incredibly valuable skill for interviews and communication in the workplace. It becomes even more noticeably apparent when you are presented with opportunities to lead. However, I do believe that many English majors underestimate the difficulty of applying/presenting these skills to a STEM centered generation. It requires a vast amount of networking and perseverance to be financially successful with this degree. This is a part of why I love this degree so much! It rewards those who work hard for it.

I loved majoring in Communication (BS Development Communication) bec we had oral exams. I felt like those kinds of assessments are more meaningful and more holistic. I felt like I really learned and embodied the lessons, not just memorize and get it over it. In terms of jobs, I found that it was relatively easier to find work as an english/communications graduate bec there are so many employers (from advertising firms to the government) who can use someone who writes or generally communicates well. I'm currently working in the research/development field and I have come to truly love technical writing and how productive it is. 💕

I really like the point that writing makes a person speak & read more, and then really help him/her to learn a language. The hardest part for me when I speak is how to make my sentence sound more logically and easily to be understood. I was told to just practice more by speaking English every day. But deeply I realized that it doesn’t help that much if I don’t really think through how to make my sentence more structured before I speak. I will definitely write more going forward.

I’m about to be a senior in college but I just switched from biology to English with a concentration in writing, rhetoric, and literacy. My grades were awful as a bio major and I wasn’t happy or even looking forward to my future career, but after some soul searching I realized English has always been one of my favorite/stronger subjects. Thankfully I’ll only be graduating a semester later than before but I’m not sure of which route I want to go with it (leaning towards PR or law), but I’m more excited than ever about the future and ready to figure it out.

I'm so happy I found your video. I'm currently a senior in high school... and I know that I've always liked English. And basically, I really need to decide what I want to study because college applications are arising. I love writing, reading and thinking vastly. Honestly, I just love getting caught up in books, fiction or non-fiction, seemingly too difficult to read or fun. My classmates teased me recently for spending so "long" on my introduction for my English professor. Let's just say, I don't mind writing and reading; I wish I had all the time in the world to do it. But really, this opened up my mind to possibilities I didn't know existed. I'm really interested in studying abroad in England, that would be a dream. So, THANK YOU! And wish me luck on my super stressful college journey aha. Good luck to you too and everyone who plans on being or is currently a major in English.

I am getting close to 40 years old and have always been a native english speaker who has always lived in the UK. I found english difficult to read and write as a child especially as much for the english spelling in unphonetic. I am still learning english words and phrases most days and every day that I come across a word or phrase that I do not understand, I now look it up online. Learning english is a life time study and I am sure that your major in english will set you up in good stead for your life.

I went to college for a semester and then dropped out cause I was dealing with some personal stuff and couldn't handle the added stress of school, but now 6 years later I'm starting to think it's about time I go back to school. I can't seem to figure out what I'd want to major in though cause when I think I've decided on a major I find myself thinking that another major would be more fun. Maybe it's just my general love of knowledge that has me indecisive when it comes to a major, but English is definitely up there as one of my choices.

Now, my current role requires much more than a certificate (college level EMS instructor). An English degree is the only major to catch my eye so far. It will only further help me as an instructor, not to mention writing grant requests for the ambulance service I also work for. This was such a great video. It may make you feel better (referring to the video) but does it make your situation better? If you are an English major, you should consider STEM courses or should have majored in STEM. Also, you should look into the R.O.I of English majors and what jobs you can get in that particular subject.

I have always liked literature, writing and reading but somehow I ended up majoring in design. Two months into it I realized The only two classes that I totally pay attention, like and make me want to research more at home are methodology and history, which are the only ones that involve investigation and books. I don’t think I made a good decision when I said I’d study design, because I only convinced myself I could grow to like it somehow and that there would be something about it I could like. I realized that I never even gave a chance to English literature because of the same prejudices you pointed out in this video, and it took me a lot of people like you and my own realization to figure English is more than just something I ‘hated’. I literally wrote, edited and published a book and loved every second of the process, and while I watch your and other videos I can’t help but think Why did I reject English this much? It’s been weeks of me making my design collages, drawings and vector illustrations where I can’t stop thinking I want to get out and start all over, but in English. :(

I think people who keep degrading English Majors aren’t the brightest people, there is so much one can do with the degree IMO. I am going to be starting college in September, and at first I was going to go with CS but to be honest I am not super into it. I will give CS a try and start my first semester with it, since technology is important in our generation...learning the basics or a bit won’t hurt. I want to major in English though. Being someone who speaks multiple languages is an advantage and having English major under my belt will help me even outside US...so I say being literate is very important.

When people say that a degree is useless, they're not saying you can't get a job after your degree. They're saying that it's very difficult to get a job directly related to your degree, a job that directly requires your degree. Personally, I choose not to spend 4 years learning something I'm never going to use for the rest of my life. A lot of the jobs you mentioned are jobs people can get into with ANY degree. Law school and med school for example don't care what undergrad you had. I think you would make your case a lot stronger if you limited the job choices to jobs related to an english major. After all, that's what people want. If they're studying a degree, they want to get a job related to it and they want to continue using what they learned for those 4 years...otherwise, why do it?
