Getting a BA in English has allowed me to teach abroad in Korea, China, Sweden, and Indonesia. With 10 years of very diverse experience (pre-school, grade school, college, pensioners, online, international schools, etc., etc.) I could get a job teaching anywhere in the world I choose to live. I've worked as a writer for a magazine interviewing famous musicians, and my degree also allowed me to commission as an officer in the Army. I've had a fun life, and many diverse experiences that I would not have had without majoring in English.

@@cristinaleesullivan9157 Hello! Fellow student here prepping for college apps :). I was struggling with this decision as well a few months ago. Journalism is great if you're 100% sure it's the career field you wanna go into and you're not going in it for the money. English is more of a broad degree which can be applied to many different careers with varying salaries. I chose English because I love writing/reading but I'm not sure exactly what specific career I want to go into after college. It also pairs well with another major or minor to gain skills in complementary fields (e.g. prospective technical writers would possibly minor or double major in a STEM degree). I recently graduated with a BA in English, and I agree that it is absolutely worth it. However, I would strongly encourage any students who are English majors/considering English as a degree path to go one step further to make it a beneficial experience. Get involved in campus organizations where you can use your writing and communication skills (lit journal, newspaper, etc.) and get an internship (or a few). For English majors (even more than for some other majors, I would argue), it is important to explore career paths and figure out what you like doing because there are so many options available. Additionally, the skills you gain through putting yourself out there and trying new things are quite important when it comes to job-seeking. Yes, the classes themselves give you the foundation you need to succeed, but it is up to you to take advantage of the resources you are given. Don't be scared to try new things (you are capable of more than you ever dreamed!) and be prepared to invest extra time into extracurricular activities/work opportunities.

@@Engel-ol5rm Trust me, the skills I have learned, along with many, have gotten the skills outside the classroom. Also, many go into English because they do like reading, but it is also because they they have bought into the lie thinking that all degrees are equal and think their dreams will come true or because they couldn't hack it at the STEM Fields and came to English to get into something easier. As for your examples, they are not exactly credible evidence for your argument since the exceptions never prove the rule and they are more likely Blue Bloods or got their degrees at a time when having a degree almost guaranteed you a job and more likely works in a field that has nothing to do with their major. Today, it is not so and English happens to be the most regretted major now.

I’ve been working for these two years, and I’ve seen how the economy sucks (especially for some minorities). I’m just concerned that I’m going back to school for the wrong major. I don’t want to graduate and be jobless/poor. I’ve already been poor, and it’s rough. Most of my friends are having trouble finding jobs in their fields (psychology and journalism). I guess my question is how do you decide what’s the best course? How do you weigh your pros and cons and ultimately decide whether to take a risk (as an English major) or pursue something else that you essentially have less passion for? I’ve always been a scholar and a 4.0 GPA ever since high school, and my parents always taught me to have big dreams, and aim high. I’m just concerned that those big dreams are gonna leave me face first in the mud somewhere. Wouldn’t be the first time it happened..... Anyway, I’m getting way to personal on KZbin! The hardest part for me when I speak is how to make my sentence sound more logically and easily to be understood. I was told to just practice more by speaking English every day. But deeply I realized that it doesn’t help that much if I don’t really think through how to make my sentence more structured before I speak. I will definitely write more going forward.

My classmates teased me recently for spending so "long" on my introduction for my English professor. Let's just say, I don't mind writing and reading; I wish I had all the time in the world to do it. But really, this opened up my mind to possibilities I didn't know existed. I'm really interested in studying abroad in England, that would be a dream. So, THANK YOU! I went to college for a semester and then dropped out cause I was dealing with some personal stuff and couldn't handle the added stress of school, but now 6 years later I'm starting to think it's about time I go back to school. I can't seem to figure out what I'd want to major in though cause when I think I've decided on a major I find myself thinking that another major would be more fun. Maybe it's just my general love of knowledge that has me indecisive when it comes to a major, but English is definitely up there as one of my choices.

I watched this a year or two ago and wish I had enough confidence to have stuck with an English major. I'm currently sulking over the time spent struggling and bullshitting my way into a nursing program just to drop out a few days ago 🙃. It is a blessing to have seen this video again, I feel more assured of my decision, and I hope I can get the courage to go back to school soon and start over.

I greatly appreciate your insight and common sense. I'm 52, finishing a paramedicine associates degree as a requirement for current job. I've been a paramedic for over 20 years. Now, my current role requires much more than a certificate (college level EMS instructor). An English degree is the only major to catch my eye so far. It will only further help me as an instructor, not to mention writing grant requests for the ambulance service I also work for. This was such a great video. I know I'm late to the game, but thank you.

Thank you so much for this video! I am at the end of my freshman year as an English major and since my school caters heavily toward STEM majors, I often feel like I chose the wrong thing and how I will be "poor" (thanks to an engineering major during orientation) in the future. I'm still battling it especially for when I graduate from school, but this video makes me feel a lot better have have a lot more hope!
@infamouscrusader33635 жыл бұрын
It may make you feel better (referring to the video) but does it make your situation better? If you are an English major, you should consider STEM courses or should have majored in STEM. Also, you should look into the R.O.I of English majors and what jobs you can get in that particular subject.

I have always liked literature, writing and reading but somehow I ended up majoring in design. Two months into it I realized The only two classes that I totally pay attention, like and make me want to research more at home are methodology and history, which are the only ones that involve investigation and books. I don’t think I made a good decision when I said I’d study design, because I only convinced myself I could grow to like it somehow and that there would be something about it I could like. I realized that I never even gave a chance to English literature because of the same prejudices you pointed out in this video, and it took me a lot of people like you and my own realization to figure English is more than just something I ‘hated’. I literally wrote, edited and published a book and loved every second of the process, and while I watch your and other videos I can’t help but think Why did I reject English this much? It’s been weeks of me making my design collages, drawings and vector illustrations where I can’t stop thinking I want to get out and start all over, but in English. :(

@@jigsaw2253 Probably. I am an English Major and I'll be honest, I do regret it. If I could I would have switched majors. Thankfully, I am going into Technical Writing. The pay is well and the job growth is great since it is a STEM related field. If I can't get into Technical Writing, my next plan is to go to a Trade School and learn CIS and get into Web Development while writing novels on the side. My advice for young people is not to major in English and not so the same mistake I made. If you are going to major in subject, major in something worthwhile (STEM).

I think people who keep degrading English Majors aren’t the brightest people, there is so much one can do with the degree IMO. I am going to be starting college in September, and at first I was going to go with CS but to be honest I am not super into it. I will give CS a try and start my first semester with it, since technology is important in our generation...learning the basics or a bit won’t hurt. I want to major in English though. Being someone who speaks multiple languages is an advantage and having English major under my belt will help me even outside US...so I say being literate is very important.

When people say that a degree is useless, they're not saying you can't get a job after your degree. They're saying that it's very difficult to get a job directly related to your degree, a job that directly requires your degree. Personally, I choose not to spend 4 years learning something I'm never going to use for the rest of my life. A lot of the jobs you mentioned are jobs people can get into with ANY degree. Law school and med school for example don't care what undergrad you had. I think you would make your case a lot stronger if you limited the job choices to jobs related to an english major. After all, that's what people want. If they're studying a degree, they want to get a job related to it and they want to continue using what they learned for those 4 years...otherwise, why do it?
