Today after months in my newly purchased home, I've finally taken the plunge to start my own business from my backyard selling peppers and pepper plant clones from a mother. I want to thank you for helping me throughout the years to become inspired in growing organic and healthy foods all from my own hands. John, I hope to have you host a show with me in the coming years after I get my business off the ground. Just wanted to say thank you for inspiring me. Peace and love friend.

I have finally learned this lesson. Always grow way more peppers than tomatoes. Peppers take a little longer to get started, but they can be perennial. Peppers also set fruit longer and can tolerate much higher temperatures than tomatoes. They have less pest snd disease issues than tomatoes. They have a longer storage life than tomatoes.

My first season growing was last year. Tomatoes got blight and were dismal apart from a cherry tomatoe, the 2 pepper plants i had was very disease resistant and kicked ass. They even grew all winter and are now ahead of the game for this year. Growing on a Barcelona patio. Only problem was i didnt have enough, this year im going with what works so im 100% with you buddy. Thanks for your great vids, im learning so much

Great video. You can freeze the peppers in a plastic bread bag, great way to avoid the winter 1 dollar a pepper prices at the supermarket, the small ones are just as good to store, and often that is all you need in a recipe.

I'm a longtime subscriber. I appreciate your advice on many topics from the best juicers to the best blenders to buy. Sorry this is so long. I've heard your love of peppers and your bias towards tomatoes. I enjoy a good pepper too. But the tomato is atop the food pyramid in my garden. I think that most people share that opinion considering that all the local plant nurseries sell more tomato plants than any other vegetable. The center piece of most patio vegetable gardens is the pot of tomatoes. Other than in the winter when most store bought tomatoes taste like cardboard (good only for frying), I'm not convinced that the typical sweet bell and other sweet peppers have a greater flavor profile than tomatoes. I can get great peppers in the winter though. That's a plus. But in the summer, the tomato rules my garden and my diet. I usually grow at least 8 varieties of tomatoes, all of which have distinctively different flavor profiles, that afford them in a variety of dishes and canning. I'm 66 and I've been gardening long before you were born and not once have I heard somebody ask if I've got peppers before asking how my tomatoes, cucumbers and corn are coming along. Tomatoes are the first to ripen and the first that family and friends request. And when I take that first incredibly flavorful and juicy bite of an Early Girl, it clearly means that SUMMER HAS ARRIVED! The beef steak tomato doesn't taste like a sweet 100. A plum tomato doesn't taste like a Celebrity. A Sorrento doesn't taste like a grape tomato. They are all distinctively different. Some make a better soup, or make a better paste, or cans better, or just taste better sliced on a sandwich. I can't think of another vegetable/fruit taken right out of the garden that has more potential uses in the kitchen than the tomato. I've never heard anyone saying, "I crave a BLP ( bacon, lettuce and pepper sandwich). I've never heard of anyone bragging about their fried green peppers recipe. I've never heard anybody complaining that their salad didn't have any peppers on it. Sure, peppers complement famous dishes too. However, unless the pepper is of the spicy variety they pretty much all (red, yellow, purple) taste alike: sweet and juicy with the same crunchy texture. The green bell peppers vary little and most have a weak sweet flavor with a strong bitter, chlorophyll after taste. Only the spicy have 'heat' which usually overwhelms whatever flavor it and other foods might have. I don't remember how delicious the hot pepper is, only how it made my mouth burn and my eyes water. Ever hear of anybody complaining that their fingers suffered 1st degree burns from dicing a tomato? Or had to drink a quart of milk to lessen the mouth pain after eating a tomato sandwich? Or had to rinse out their eyes for an hour after accidentally touching them with fingers that just chopped a hot pepper? Never! Tomato lovers genuinely enjoy the many unique flavor profiles that the fruit abundantly provides -- without the heat. I do think that they both complement each other very well too. Pizza with tomato sauce, pepperoni and bell peppers, anyone? Tomatoes, cucumbers and sweet bell peppers gazpacho, yummy! But on their own, the tomato wins with far more ways to use it as a kitchen staple, great to use as a base for countless recipes, either fresh, dried, stewed, pureed, or canned. Respectfully, my garden will continue to thrive with far more tomatoes than peppers despite all your contrary talking points.

Beautiful Chile Peppers! Love this video. You forgot 3 of my favorite reasons to grow peppers. 1. They're super easy to grow. 2. You can get the seeds free from the peppers you are eating. and 3. They produce fruit so many times. Off the same plant. Harvesting peppers all summer long, and into the winter sometimes too if you bring them indoors. Thanks for the video.
@tbillyjoeroth4 жыл бұрын
Tomatoes aren't hollow. You can get pounds and pounds of them from one plant. Peppers are harder to grow and will have problems in hot weather; droop; drop flowers; leaves turn yellow; and take forever to turn the ripe color. We had tons of Russian black tomatoes in 100+ degree weather a few years ago and all I did was water them. Two plants, and I was giving away tomatoes. Peppers are a pain in the ass, just waiting for weeks to see them finally turn red? Why bother? The bigger the pepper the fewer peppers the plant produces. Who needs 100 chili peppers?

I've always grown lots of peppers and maybe one or two tomato plants off to the side. I agree 100% on the disease aspect, the only thing I have to worry about growing peppers in Austin are the green horn caterpillars that come out for about 2 weeks a year in July and strip the leaves off of my plants (they'll survive, it just sets me back immensely). I've also kept potted peppers inside without sun for a couple of weeks and every plant survived, whereas all of my tomatoes did not.

John, but I love green tomatoes. At the end of the season when it gets too cold and the last few tomatoes on the plant you know will never ripen, I pickle them. Great video John! I agree growing peppers is a lot cooler than tomato's! I grow and eat hot peppers and do hot pepper reviews. A little info though. The seeds are not what make the pepper hot; it's the placenta and the oils created by the placenta.
@Robbob993311 жыл бұрын
The seeds, the goo covering the seeds and the ribs that the seeds are attached to are where the max heat comes from. The meat of the peppers is not as high as these but still will bonk your ass if it is a high heat pepper.
@SmokinJames11 жыл бұрын
Robbob9933 I assume the goo you are talking about is the same oil i'm talking about. The ribs and the white interior are the placenta and that is what creates the oil that coats the seeds and the inside of the pepper.

Smokin James The goo I'm referring to is a slight jelly substance some peppers have on seeds sort of like tomatoes but nowhere near the amount.

I like peppers, but mostly for seasoning, and not so much for eating alone. I do like growing a variety, and drying some for later use. I love tomatoes more, but hate growing them, because of horn worms and other pesky problems that they always have. Love your enthusiasm!
