Don´t Hold it. Get a Retro-converter. Those start at $10. However you need use a hack to set the aperture before retro-mounting it. You press the aperture preview button, while holding it pressing the lens release button und remove it. screw the adapter on, mount it and you have the set aperture.

I picked one up recently, used. Using it on a T3i. I'm not a professional photographer, but I wouldn't say I'm a beginner. I find it's fairly easy to get good shots with it. I'm mostly taking pictures of plants, flowers, landscapes. When I do venture into portraits, with people, I'm sure it'll hold up well.

I am doing my first steps in food photography with 50mm lens and I am so excited with the results. Thank you for a video, I didn't know that there is a possibility to turn the lens in order to have a micro photos, it can be so useful in food photography.

The nifty fifty is a great lens. I had the Canon 50mm 1.8 stm version ii, and for the price to performance ratio it was amazing. It did lack auto focus, but since I have a steady hand, it wasn't much of a problem for me. I often used it for portraits and product photography. Never tried using the macro trick, as I was worried of the back of the lens and camera senor being too exposed. Have given this lens to my sister as she starts exploring photography for herself. :)
@KaiCreative4 жыл бұрын
The macro trick isn't as good as a macro lens and can be a bit fiddly but the lens has a rim protecting it so don't worry too much about damaging it... unless the stm version ii doesn't have that rim? Anyway hope that your sister has fun using it! (:

The last time I watched your video, I had a 50mm 1.8 lens for my Nikon camera, but sinxce then that lens was lost, and my camera tech sold me a 55mm 2.8 macro MANUAL focusing. I wasn't too happy with it at first, but once I got used to the manual focusing, I really enjoy the closer perspective. I also have a 24-70mm zoom lens, so I'm good to go: thanks for your tips!

I recently purchased the 50mm 1.8 STM and I'm liking it. Prime lenses take some getting used to as I've been using zoom lenses my whole life. I like it for low light, but I find myself going back to the 18-55mm kit lens that came with my SL3/250D.

I have another great reason for ya, thanks BTW... Like you, I've had the nifty 50 since 2017, originally on a T6i and didn't use it much favoring slower zooms with IS. Things got interesting with the EOS RP's low light sensitivity, but hold the show!!! Dude, I'm not joking. From a seated position at f/1.8, ISO 800ish I can shoot 2 second handhelds with the R5's IBIS and 80+% of them will be pixel sharp! Stuff I can't discern with dark-adapted eyes look like daylight shots with virtually no noise! It's like some ridiculous super-power... That little 50mm plus IBIS, Dude... unreal!
@veograbo3 жыл бұрын
I mean pixel peeping off an unforgiving 45 MPx image. IBIS takes that lens, hits it with a spider bite, gamma rays and the Captain America serum all at once. Try it. Let ISO fly and hit some f/1.8s at 2 sec with the R6 or R5... You have to see it to believe it! That of course translates into lower ISOs at any given slowish shutter speed... A lot more workable low-noise frames (and you can take the R5 up to 6400 ISO and it'll have s lot less noise than the T6i at ISO 400).
@veograbo3 жыл бұрын
But yeah, had to mention. I come from the film era and large format, as well as 35mm. Frickin' try that with Kodachrome! LOL ...ISO 25 and five stops dynamic range... Quality is a different topic but for sheer screw-arounability, Digital is a game changer; and IBIS on Canon glass is trending to be epic.

May I know in your opinion based only on photography, should I purchase and upgrade my camera body? Or should I just stick to my 550D and get the nifty fifty? This lens back in the day was one of the big factors of why I fell in love with dslr videography. Even as a Sony shooter I still adapted it to my a7s back in 2016 and used for quite a few years after until I upgraded to the canon 50mm 1.4. Btw Kai on a separate point, what are you thinking of the canon R5 and are you thinking of purchasing when it comes out?
@KaiCreative4 жыл бұрын
Nice one Pav. Yeah, I picked up the 1.4 too (: I was hoping that the R5 was gonna be out before the end of the financial year - so I could purchase it for the business, but ended up getting the EOS-R instead. I might have to remortgage the house to get one though :D What about yourself as a Sony user?
@pavguliani4 жыл бұрын
@@KaiCreative Yeh honestly specs don;t always mean everything but with the fact that canon cameras have great video auto focus, lens line up and colors it would be really hard not to switch back especially if sony are not planning to bring out any new full frame mirrorless for a while. But yeh with the specs mentioned it would be hard to see it not being in that 5-6k price range so that could definitely impact my decision as well.

newbie question: inherited an old 550D + 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens, it's not an IS model. kit lens is ok, but read a lot about 50mm f/1.8 STM so i bought one and it's fantastic! absolutely love it. but im torn as to future upgrades... if this becomes a serious hobby, would it be better to get a 24mm f/2.8 for street (im street+portrait+landscape mainly), and keep kit lens for odd video sessions, or jump straight to 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM (a substantial investment for a newbie)

Thanks for the video, very informative. I'm looking at getting the 250d soon, and I can get a bundle with the kit lens and the 50mm 1.8, but I was wondering if it would make more sense to just buy the body and then buy the 50mm without the kit lens? I am a complete amateur and will mainly be shooting pics of my dog, some family shots occasionally and travel pics. So still trying to figure what the best beginner lens is for myself, or would the kit lens be enough to start with? 😊

@@AlanHollowedPhotography can you give me an update of your opinion on the 250d and the 50mm? I am considering buying exactly what you bought
@AlanHollowedPhotography4 жыл бұрын
@@hendy_cp hey, I think the 50mm 1.8 and 250d are a great beginner combo. The 50mm is very sharp and the bokeh you get with it is great. One drawback is that the 50mm is quite zoomed in, on an apsc camera like the 250d its closer to an 85mm. It's great for portraits (or dog pics as I ise it for) but you will need to stand further back to get a family shot or wider frame. Overall I do love it, it's a great beginner camera, small and light and you can get some great shots with it so it's definitely a thumbs up from me 😊
