As someone with tattoos myself, I actually agree with the no tattoos rule. The only time I would disagree with it, would be in the case of Pocahontas, the tattoo around her arm. If someone was playing Pocahontas and they had that tattoo, I think it should be allowed, but only if it was the tattoo she has. Otherwise no. It would ruin the illusion.

If the costumes are a danger they need to be redesigned with lighter materials. Clearly their costumers are not using the best durable and light weight materials if the frames are breaking bones. They should find cosplayers, fursuiters, and wedding dress designers who actually know how to make elaborate and safe gowns and costumes with amazing accuracy to complex, historical, and creative designs.

Even fursuiters and cosplays take risks, have uncomfortable costumes, and sometimes not the lightest weight materials when going for complete accuracy. It's not that easy, especially when trying to stick to a specific time period. Yes, there are better ways, but not always the most accurate or pleasing to the eye for disney
@cherrycola69616 жыл бұрын
It really isn't as dangerous as they make it sound they exaggerated a lot of points and before they become a character in the suits they train them like a lot and they have a supervisor with them to make sure that there safe and they take breaks every 15 minuets and either swap out or take a break and cool down for 10 minuets before coming back to meet ups

What makes me angry is the furry costume heads. The fact that they can, and have caused injuries to so many employees is worthy of a lawsuit. While I'm sure part of it is to continue 'wow'ing the guests with their groundbreaking technology, which includes blinking eyes, wiggling noses, etc., I believe I speak for everyone who has to wear those heads when I say that they do not have to use such heavy materials. Plastics like most of the toon characters have should be a huge no-no. Plastic is extremely heavy, so no wonder Minnie got whiplash from a guest shakinhg her. What they need to use is what the furry community uses: Foam. Toony heads are easier, cheaper, and safer to make using foam, and you can still add the realistic effects to it without risking the safety of the wearers. If you need a skin-like feel to the surface somewhere, all it takes is adding a thin layer of silicone rubber or latex. If you need the head to be more sturdy, cut thicker layers of the foam. It is not that hard to make safe mascot heads for your workers, Disney. In fact it will save you money.

In my fanfics, the characters are the real deal, they CAN talk about non-Disney things without punishment. In my AU storyverse, the characters (who are NOT people in costumes but are the REAL deals) CAN talk about non-Disney IPs and brands. And the conversations that they have with guests are hilarious. Guest: Hey, Anna, have you been on the Mario Kart experience yet? Anna: Yeah! Olaf gets blasted with Koopa shells all the time! Additionally, forget "keep a smile on", because here, the characters show EVERY emotion. This means that if you're a kid and you piss Elsa off, you can beat she will freeze your hiney. If you're a creepy pervert like John Moyer looking to molest Minnie Mouse, Mickey will kick your ass to the point where security will haul you out of the park, so don't even TRY touching Minnie's boobs! Only Mickey can as he is her husband! In addition, every character is a martial artist. They all can fight, just like Mulan, thanks to the Power Rangers training them.

The prohibition against tattoos makes perfect sense. You're portraying a character and have to look the part. Realistic expectation or not, a lot of small children think that when they go to a Disney park, they'll be meeting the real characters. Spotting a tattoo on a character that shouldn't have one could ruin a child's day at the park or, depending on how hung up on that character they are, their whole vacation. I don't even think it's out of bounds for non-character 'cast members'. A lot of tattoos portray brands, nudity, characters, religions, philosophies, language, or other things that Disney doesn't want to endorse. At the end of the day, it's their park, and if those are their requirements, then that's how it has to be. If you want to work as an engineer but you went to school for history, no one is obligated to hire you as an engineer. If a business requires you to not have marked yourself up like a graffiti-covered train car, but you're sleeved out and have more holes in your head than a bowl of Cheerios, too bad.
@Crazed-Sanity6 жыл бұрын
I do agree when it's Princesses but not so much other cast members. They could allow tattoos while still banning certain types, such as the things you mentioned. Many workplaces that allow tattoos still apply rules to the type.

I agree. Princesses should look the part. They said if it's easily covered - they don't care. @@Crazed-Sanity I think they have so many people willing to work there, they can choose. And arguing over which tatoo is ok and which is not would be a pain in the ass. So it's just more convenient to ban them all. After all it's not a necessity that you work in a Disneyland.

The 2 finger point rule is also because Walt used to smoke... A lot, and he had a lot of pictures taken of him that have him holding a cigarette with 2 fingers that were photoshopped before being released to the public, which lead to Walt essentially pointing to places with 2 fingers since the cigarette was airbrushed out. Our sons were having a great time with 3 princesses to themselves lol no idea if this was part of training or not. They talked though. Tattoos take away from the person behind them. If someone is all tatted up, people focus on that. The idea is for the Disney cast member to make an impression on a guest whether it's a character or just a regular cast member. Every cast member is a character and in costume. People didn't have tattoos in the era of Main street, Frontierland, New Orleans square, Critter Country, Adventure land, Fantasyland, so you can't add tattoos to those costumes.

Piercings and tattoos should not be allowed. I think first off they have to maintain uniformity and when one Snow White has a wrist tattoo and another one does not kids notice it and ask questions. Another thing is, while yes Pocahontas had a tribal tattoo she was really the only princess with any sort of tattoo that I recall so that would ruin the magic as well. Not to mention seeing ear expanders on a princess would not be considered lady like in the times they were written to be in. I 100% agree with Disney’s rules. They have childhood memories to maintain and they can’t have small details making children question the magic.

Teresa Wilson i never said she shouldn’t have that tattoo but I was just using her in reference saying she’s the only princess I know of with a tattoo because that was just the tradition of her people. Where as belle (for example) doesn’t seem to have a tattoo so why would the belle at Disney world have one??? If the princess has a tattoo that’s fine to put the exact tattoo on the actress portraying the princess but I mean all other tattoos would be out of character and ruin the magic.
@maliyahduckworth65756 жыл бұрын
Grace Robertson I completely agree with you and Disney. I totally think it would ruin the magic if princess's or princes had tattoos or piercings, and I'm glad Disney has that rule :)

About the tattoo, kids are picky and Disney's main target audience are kids. Have you ever shown a kid a knockoffs version of Disney character and they complained about it until you get them the real one? Yep, best keep up the illusion in Disneyland if they don't want parents complaining about unhappy little critiques because their favorite character have something that proofs they are not who they appear to be. Before complaining about the restrictions not being bendable to modern fashionistas princess wannabe, try imagining yourself in the shoe of the management staff having to listen to unhappy parents with their unhappy kids as well as unhappy unbending die hards. They will commit suicide at the end of their first shift.

In any acting job, you have to look like the character. This is nothing new or unusual. If you're playing a Victorian schoolmistress - cover your tattoo. If you are playing an animated character, you have to...big shock -look like the character. If Belle in the movie doesn't have a tattoo and you have a tattoo somewhere that can't be hidden then you don't get the job. Actors have to be a blank canvas, it's not rocket science. ALL Disney workers are known as Cast Members because they are part of the overall theatrical experience of being in the park. Even the people picking up your dirty plates. The overall look is supposed to be a clean cut, neutral - no different to any other high end store or restaurant.

AnimalCracker45 except for Pocahontas with the marking on her right arm. But it's understandable that it'd be confusing if a kid sees a Disney character with a tattoo. Also some people have been known to get some inappropriate looking tattoos so it's understandable that it'd be bad to display those in a place where kids are going to see them
@dragondragon50406 жыл бұрын
Along with the fact of as assumed stage actors they should not be dumb enough to get a hard to hide tattoo because it is not just Disney that has those requirements. In acting on stage the actors are required to be able to quickly and easily hide tattoos with a preference of not having them unless that character was designed with a tattoo. It is meant to make it easier on the makeup artists and costume designer, along with not ruining the look of a character. I have seen actors booted straight out of an audition because they had tattoos that would be too hard to cover in a stage production

I was a dancer in their parade. Maybe I was in a different part of the backstage than you, or maybe they changed. Also, I was 10 and they didn’t even know my name. So, in conclusion, they are not doing a backround check on a ten year old who ‘worked’ there for two days when they didn’t even know my name. They also probably have lots and lots of backstage, so we could have been in a different part. Edit: the people who worked backstage at Disney land didn’t even talk directly to me once. I'm not against tattoos and piercings, but you can't just changed the rules of such a big company just because you want to, wen you have your own company you can do what you want with it but don't expect a complete company to change there rules. Is as simple as this, if you can't handle the rules then don't even apply for the job. The Disney look is really important for that company so we should just respect it.

I agree 100%. Tattoos and piercings are fine if you're into that sort of thing, but don't expect the world to conform to your standards when you refuse to conform to other peoples' standards. And yes, absolutely, when playing the role of an established character, you're expected to act and look like that character.

@keithcraig5066 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's about hand outs. If it was, they wouldn't be looking to play a Disney Princess. Long hours, a strict work environment and pretty low pay is not something a person looking for a hand out would be interested in. As I stated above, I think it's more about forcing people to conform to their standards than anything else.

I can see why they have the tattoo rule. It's all about consistency, Disney's whole aesthetic is about keeping the magic alive, for the children especially. And, as some of the most iconic and recognisable characters in the world, the Disney Princesses are an integral part of keeping this illusion up. Seeing a princess with a tattoo at one event and then spotting the same princess without a tattoo at another event or part of the park would tip off even a small child that they weren't the same person. Thus ruining the magic. Yes, tattoos are a form of self expression and under normal circumstances I'd say that being inked up shouldn't matter, but these particular cast members are actresses. They're not being themselves, and their job is essentially to convince the kids that they actually are that princess.

but you have understand. Disney doesnt looks at themselves as a company like any other. Whats acceptable for Walmart isn't acceptable for Disney in their opinion. They have a brand and reputation to uphold and maintain. Disney is infamous for protecting their property and image (you can thank walt Disney for like 80% of the copyright laws that exist as they are today). Disney does everything it can to make sure they are streamlined and perfect. All the way down to the ride operators. Its not about tattoos being seen as extreme or unsightly. Its just not part of the legacy of Disney's closely and fiercely guarded brand.

the tunnels are under the disney world park so two of the same character would never bump into each other when traveling. however, the fact that they are underground is a misconception. florida is so close to the water level that if you actually dug underground you'd likely be hitting water. if you ever go to disney world you may notice you go up a slight incline in magic kingdom as you walk up main street. the park is technically the second floor and the tunnels are at ground level! i find it really cool tbh.

The reason Disney is so strict about tattoos, especially with the character roles, is that the look across different workers for the same character needs to be uniform. This is so the Disney "magic" isn't broken, especially for children. As for the other workers, Disney is not the only company to do this. And it isn't an "unreasonable" or "outdated" rule. If you want to work at a disney park, don't modify your body in ways that can't be covered or hidden. End of story. You don't have to go out and get piercings, gages, body modifications, or tattoos. No one forced you to do those things. No one is born that way. So Disney is not discriminating just because they don't want visible tattoos on their employees. If you have a face tattoo, you can't go and claim discrimination against a company that has policies against facial tattoos. You make a stupid choice that puts limits on what places will hire you, you face the consequences.
@arose927956 жыл бұрын
The confidentiality thing also isn't that much of a secret. Disney isn't the only company to have such a strict policy on talking about the company or the work you do. I once worked at a bakery, and part of the contract I had to sign stated I could not reveal recipies or methods used specifically by the bakery. The contracts behind American Idol and the X Factor often have similar parameters. To go back to previous ones, of course the height, weight, look, and character availiablity all goes into who can be picked as what character. Can't have a 6ft Aladdin one day and a 5.5ft Aladdin the next. Consistancy is key.

And the tatoo thing being outdated, yes it’s 2018. But some parents aren’t okay with tattoos therefore wouldn’t want kids looking up to these princesses. I don’t think I’d like to see a tattoo on a Disney princess.

It's more than that. I honestly dont care if you don't like your kid seeing my tattoos... but CMs, especially those playing a specific character, like the princesses, are playing a role and so must match the image of the character. A universal rule that tattoos must be covered prevents discrimination. I've yet to hear a CM complaint

As a cast member, Disney is know as their “show”. Most of this is true. You would not get the full effect or Disney experience if you would see tattoos on characters, which do not appear in movies. Yes, tattoos are more acceptable in today’s world (I have a few) but they must be concealed along with piercings. Disney is strict on things like the point that I even do at home lol, but that’s what makes it so magical. our social media’s are restricted as to what we can post. Character performers are not allowed to reveal their character. We must remain character integrity and that is why you will ALWAYS hear that there are only ONE of each character. (Even if you just saw him/her in Epcot vs Magic Kingdom) Also, as mentioned, characters are to keep their role true to character. They can’t really know about “today’s world” as cell phones, so asking to take a selfie, it may seem silly if they ask what that Device you are holding in your hand. the Training we go through, and how much plays into what makes Disney, Disney, is so true to what is in the video even down to the garbage, Q&A’s, and the character requirements. ☺️

Kay, so with social media, if you keep your account/s and post/s private, how would corporate know?
@ZeStreD6 жыл бұрын
@@adriannavanoyen Posting anything on social media is rarely "private" Restrict something to "friends only" and all that needs to happen is for one of those people to then share it out THEIR friend list. And if a site has programming to stop that? Theres this amazing tool called the snipping tool in literally every iteration of Windows and I'm sure Macintosh has an equivalent. Disney enforces zero social media reference because there is no guarantee and people cant truly be trusted.
@madisonsmith32016 жыл бұрын
Adrianna Miller yes ma’am what was said ^^ is entirely true. People screen shot left and right and don’t mind ratting you out so you get reprimands for it, terminated, or fired! I’ve never had any issues while being a CP having a FT or PT out to get me, but I’ve heard it happen before. Keep friends close but enemies closer!

Disney is about bringing your favourite characters to life. For me, even as an adult, going to Disney was an outstanding and happy experience seeing the princesses, even knowing they are just actors. I would upset if tattoos and piercings were allowed. It goes against what the character in the movie looks like and ruin the fairytale brought to life feel.

Isn't the tattoo rule a part of almost any workplace with formal environments? Since they can appear as unprofessional and intimidating that wouldn't be the best thing for a amusement park surrounded with children, especially since you have to be the character. Honestly though what would the pay be like? It has to be good with so much work in hiring, training, and working. Beyond that some of these are pretty rough, but the tattoo one and appearance one make sense since your supposed to match the character, its the same thing for actors in either theatre or movies.
@amandacas16656 жыл бұрын
Francis Harkins I guess teachers aren’t professionals? I have a half sleeve, another tattoo on my wrist, and one on my ankle, I teach kindergarten and my students know about my tattoos and have seen them all....

Well, I know some people say excessive piercings or tattoos can hurt prospective teachers (this coming from someone who went through teacher education). That said, I work at a zoo and they do allow tattoos that aren't vulgar. Surprised me, but I'm glad
@dianneagain38306 жыл бұрын
Who would know that Goofy, Mickey,Donald or Pluto had a tattoo or a face full of piercings in those costumes? I know a lawyer who is covered in ink and one of my doctors has at least one I've spotted and they're just as professional as anyone else in their fields. And the pay sucks! Orlando is loaded with former Disney employees who tell people who come to town in hopes of working at the park to steer clear of that hell. You make more working at a fast food joint and you have less stress and no stinking contract threatening you for life.
@Alex-xn9th6 жыл бұрын
lol, that's true. Face characters are one thing, but the suited ones should be allowed to wear whatever they want. If just their normal human face ruins the magic, nothing on their skin would make a difference!
@jessicataylor71746 жыл бұрын
2:04 Tattoos and piercings just have to be covered. Covering tattoos, piercings, scars, blemishes etc is a normal part of being an actor/performer. There is nothing discriminatory about it.

My opinion with the tattoos - if you’re a character that shows skin then yeah, no tattoos. The character doesn’t have tattoos so yeah, it makes sense. However, cast members should be able to have tattoos as long as they are not offensive tattoos. That’s my opinion.
@TheAgent3776 жыл бұрын
many cast members do have tattoos. just on their arms/shoulders/thighs/torsos where they can be covered by the costume. or else they cover them with makeup. disney doesnt actually say "you cant have any tattoos!" they say "all tattoos must be covered throughout the work day"
@lamisha26056 жыл бұрын
I agree cause the tattoos could be like small lollipop. For example snow white could have a tiny Apple tattoo on her hand. Elsa could have a snow flake on her palm. Rupunzel could have a golden flower on her ankle. Tiana could have leaves and a cute tiny frog on her wrist. Don't you agree?

In any acting job, you have to look like the character. This is nothing new or unusual. If you're playing a Victorian schoolmistress - cover your tattoo. If you are playing an animated character, you have to...big shock -look like the character. If Belle in the movie doesn't have a tattoo and you have a tattoo somewhere that can't be hidden then you don't get the job. Actors have to be a blank canvas, it's not rocket science.
