Thanks to Late Shri Narayana Reddy for this anecdote. The experiment mentioned is from the book "Life in the Soil: A Guide for Naturalists and Gardeners" by James B. Nardi. Here's the excerpt: To establish how much nutrition a plant gets from the soil, the Belgian scientist Jan Baptista van Helmont performed a simple experiment over 350 years ago that we still cite today as a particularly informative experiment on plant nutrition. First, van Helmont filled a large pot with exactly 200 pounds of soil that he had thoroughly dried in an oven. Next he watered the soil and planted a shoot that he had cut from a willow tree. He weighed the willow shoot at the time he planted it and then again five years later. The shoot that initially weighed five pounds grew into a small tree weighing 169 pounds and three ounces. Throughout the experiment, he only added water to the soil to keep it moist, and he carefully covered the surface of the pot with a sheet of metal perforated with tiny holes to keep dust from accumulating on the surface of the soil. In addition to weighing the tree after five years of growth, van Helmont also dried the soil from the pot and found that the soil had lost only two ounces of its initial starting weight of 200 pounds. Most of the 164 pounds that the willow shoot had gained in the five years must have come from water and air, but only a tiny fraction of the plant's increase in weight could have come from the soil.
