When I was younger, we used to go backpacking. We didn't carry a tent. We chose light aluminum chairs instead for comfort. We slept on the ground by the campfire. At 3am, the sky is fantastic. Yes, shooting stars go all the way across the sky. You can see the edge of the milky way. I'm 73 now and can't sleep on the ground anymore. But I just bought a 2016 Nissan Rogue and am exploring inside the car for places to put things and how to make a bed in back. I will go alone when the weather warms. It's been a long time! Your tips about what to bring and be safe are helping me plan my first solo trip, which might be in my driveway just in case! 🤗

I grew up with homebody parents, so I’m an indoorsy person, with no clue how to camp. But now we’re trying to make some memories for our energetic boys before they’re grown, and I’m intimidated and overwhelmed by all the effort a camping trip will take. You pointing out that you’re getting away, disconnecting, experiencing nature, is helping me to remember that this is how memories are made (in between the chaos). Thank you for this!

Probably the best part is turning the phone to Airplane Mode (saving battery life) when you leave civilization, and planning to be able to go camping during meteor showers (Perseids) is especially rewarding. Board games have been the top luxury item in recent years.

You covered the items really well including the sights at night. The last time Haley's Comet came by I was way back in the Okefenokee Swamp canoe camping and watching it. For the most part it's Ultralight Backpacking while car camping offers me some luxuries. My luxury item when car camping is naturally the car and it's benefits since I'm not walking. The 2nd item is a well stocked Ice Chest and extra water.

The stars . . .! Once, I helped a family of friends move to Phoenix. The night sky was so clear, I decided to take my sleeping bag and sleep in their new backyard. Shooting stars galore! I stopped counting after 20! What a night! What a show!

Tip: use a pool floaty as a nice air mattress for a tent. It's best if you buy a quality one and test it out before you use it. That's what I used for my sons and I in out tents. They even have a blow up pillow on most models. Cover it with a blanket or stick it inside of a extra sleeping bag.

I plan my trips on Google maps and save them. That way, when I don't have a cell signal or internet, it still works. Recently, before the return trip, I decided to get gas. Since I had already checked the route for gas stations and restaurants, and marked them, I easily found the gas station I wanted before the drive home. I hope this helps someone. #3a Tell someone your itinerary - Do this in person/on the phone. Do NOT post it on social media before you leave, or during your trip. Unfortunately there are some people who might see your post and take advantage to go to your house while you're not home. Post about your adventures after you get home.

I grew up on a farm in rural Pennsylvania. Being able to see so many stars and my shadow in the light of the full moon. Last week my second wife and I went camping in East Texas for our honeymoon and it was fantastic. My luxury item was coffee. Though we had a similar stove from a different brand I brought along my Jetboil stove since it was far faster for boiling water. I think I have the same dripper - the X-Brew. Last year I did a two week motorcycle camping trip. A portion was not camping - attending a conference in St Louis - but the rest was. So many wonderful memories. My last stop was New Orleans to visit friends. I was coming from the mountains of North Carolina and stopped at a campground in Mississippi. The low was to be 68F and no chance of precipitation so I didn't put the rain fly on. I drifted off to sleep with a view of the stars and seeing some shooting stars.

Actually, some pretty good tips on camping in general not just car camping or RVing. I think one of, if not the most important, tip is to know your location. It's really easy to get lost in the wild. To that I would add learning some basic survival skills - just in case. Other than that, my best camping tip would be to get out there and enjoy what nature has to offer!

I keep a Rand McNally map of the US in my car along with a pan analog compass. Lesson learned from getting lost in the Sierras with my parents as a teen in the 80’s. The Milky Way was gorgeous, but we were cold and completely lost 😂. I always have a “just in case” container for backup water filtration, backup fire starting, backup cooking that doesn’t require propane/butane, emergency food, wilderness first aid book, chemical light sticks, and a small trauma kit.

So, camping requires long-term planning and reservations, permits, research into local regulations to determine food and other restrictions, etc. Holy crap. Seems pretty intimidating.
