The song "I Fought the Law" emerged after Buddy Holly's death. The Crickets recorded and toured for a few years after he died, which is when the song was written by Curtis and then recorded with another vocalist. This is what was probably (or should have been) meant by the narrated dialogue. Unfortunately, the dialogue totally ignored the biggest hit recording of the song by the Bobby Fuller Four.

@ Buddy was obviously the main man,but records were released under the name The Crickets, namely the single That’ll Be The Day and the first lp was The Chirpin’Crickets. Then as a marketing ploy to have more than one single out at a time records were released under Buddy’s name alone,eg Peggy Sue.I could be wrong but I don’t think any records were released as Buddy Holly and the Crickets while Buddy was alive.

The :"original" was Barbara McKee, who worked for a record company. Record exec Fred Foster overhead a conversation at the company offices. "Who was at the meeting"? "Just me and Bobbie McKee". Foster loved the sound of that answer and suggested Kris write a song around it. Kris did not know Barbara and misheard the name as McGee. Later, while waiting for a train to pass, he remembered the phrase and started to work up a song. I believe Kris said that Gordon Lightfoot did the best rendition of the song.

@@donnagutierrez5740 Kristofferson, who didn't yet know she had recorded it, heard it shortly after she died. He loved her rendition, but said he couldn't sing the song without breaking up for a long time after that. A lot of comments have mentioned that the name Bobby McGee came from a studio secretary who was actually called Bobbie McKee, who Fred Foster suggested Kris write a song using her name, but Kris misheard the name. An interesting side note is that she was the secretary to Boudleaux Bryant, the husband in the the husband and wife songwriting team who wrote many hit songs for many artists, including almost all of the Everly Brothers early hits!

Funny! I'm watching this and I got to hallelujah. I'm intimately familiar with the Leonard Cohen version and I've never even heard of this Buckley guy... So for me, Cohen's version is the definitive version. And yes, I know there are lots of covers of the song.

A cover is when you give credit to the original author. When you give yourself credit, it’s stealing, and that’s what Zeppelin did, but you are correct, there’s only two original songs on their debut album.

@@KevyNovathere were three originals on the first album. Your time is going to come. Good times bad times and communication breakdown. You were off by one. Do your homework next time you comment. Then I won't have to correct you. It's funny because all you Zeppelin experts when you comment always get s*** wrong.

@@chriskroll4166 you’re right. It’s been probably 15 years since I listened to that album and was going off memory. Still there are more stolen songs than originals on it. But the riff in Your Time Is Gonna Come is taken from Traffic’s Dear Mister Fantasy, if I’m remembering correctly.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Bob Dylan probably made more money off of other people’s version of his songs than his own versions.

37 seconds in i had to stop. If Elvis had an original song it was written by someone else. Everything else he did was covers (previously recorded by someone else). I thought this was common knowledge. If this was the first example i couldn't stick around for the rest.

Hey Joe was a cover by Billy Roberts Hendrix did. Crimson and Cover was a song Jett did originally by Tommy James and the Shondells. "Girls just want to have fun," "All through the night" and "Money changes everything" were covers Cyndi Lauper did of other acts.

You could have saved a lot of time by saying, "All the first records released in 1963/1964 British Invasion were covers of old Black American Blues singers/songwriters." My personal fav cover is The Animals' House of the Rising Sun.

Many, but not all. "She Loves You", "Ferry Cross the Mersey", "Little Children", "Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter", "Bits and Pieces", definitely not black American blues. And the first recording of "House of the Risin' Sun" was done by Clarence Ashley with a white hillbilly group.
