For myself this era is just out of reach but you saw echoes of it at times. I knew WW1 vets as a child and their parents were old enough to remember these times. Was using a research library in the old east end in the early 90s, instead of sitting staring at a wall eating my lunch I walked around many of the Ripper sites, glad I did, no one wanted the old east end still then (infact no one wanted most of London then) so you still got the echos and atmosphere from those times in the ramshackle houses and falling down warehouses covered in old soot and traffic pollution. If I'd known how much of it would change I'd have taken a camera.

I've seen many pictures of places like Old Montague Street from the 1960's and 1970's and the buildings and houses look very much as they would have looked in late Victorian times. Bucks Row, Hanbury Street, George Yard and other locations were still standing into the early to mid 1970's and even today, even though the actual murder sites no longer exist, many many streets and buildings do still stand.

My great grandmother was born in whitechapel at the time and was substantially shorter than 5' tall. No doubt due to the terrible malnutrition and poverty that was prominent in poor areas of London at the time. It was interesting to read that Elizabeth Stride was known as 'Long Liz' because of her exceptional height for the Whitechapel area. She was only 5'2" - 5'5" tall. I think we tend to forget just how brutal life was then. Average life expectancy in the UK as a whole was 45, no doubt substantially less in Whitechapel.

The Buck's Row name change struck a cord with me. The movie Changling focused on a gruesome pedophile murderer in Wineville, California in the 1920s. The end of the film reveals the town changed its name to Mira Loma to shield itself from association with the crimes. Personally, I think Mary Jane Kelly was killed by a different person than the others, because the modus operandi of her murder was completely different than all the others. All the others were killed on the street, she was killed in her home, which shows lot more premeditation in choosing her specifically as the target, whereas all the others could have easily been just randomly picked victims that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, the amount of damage done on her body was also completely in different league to any of the others, and finally, Jack never sent any messages to the press boasting about it.
@brianbommarito33763 жыл бұрын
@@Klaital1, just my speculation, but I think the only reason he chose to start killing indoors was because he’d had too many close calls with authorities and random witnesses walking in to the alleys when he wasn’t finished with his work. Of the five so-called canonical murders, he appears to have been nearly interrupted in at least two and possibly three if you believe one theory that says he pretended to find one of the bodies.
@hogwashmcturnip8930 Жыл бұрын
@@Klaital1 I have often wondered that myself. When I learned that Mary Jane claimed to have been t trafficked to France, but escaped, I began wondering about contracts. She wasn't your average trafficking victim. She had been on the game for ages, in much swankier places than she ended up, and appeared to know those who sent her to France. Or at least have an inkling about what was going on. If we are to believe the France thing, is it possible she went expecting more than she got, and when things were not as she expected she took her leave and the gang did not like that? Or have I just watched to many Gang series? I think that is why the ripper fascinates us, because every time you think you have found a clue, it turns out to be just another strand in the web. Perhaps, but there again if (if) she knew then going to Mitre Square was an act of confidence that she thought she wouldnt be killed. But who knows? The known facts however suggest the person she was killed by was unknown to her. The killer on the other had had a really good knowledge of Mitre square and its surroundings otherwise he would not have been able to do what he did in less than 15 mins and escape without being seen. The killer clearly picked his spot well and had probably reconiotered it along with his path of escape. A degree of planning can be discerned from all the other killings particularly that if Annie Chapman and Mary Jane Kelly. The odd one out appears to Liz Stride, because for someone who killed twice before in a calculating manner one would have expected the same degree of planning on Berner St. That said the best laid plans are always subject to uncertainty and perhaps on that occasion he was "unlucky". He still managed to escape unnoticed from the scene however so one part of his plan worked.

The strangest murder of the bunch was the "Kelly Case". This revolves around the singular testimony of Ms. Maxwell but includes several other aspects as well. Kelly had split up from her "mate" Joseph Barnett because he disapproved of her prostitution lifestyle, BUT he was still visiting her and giving her money. She was letting a female friend stay with her, whose name I forget, and they were sleeping together in the same double bed she had shared with Barnett, which also upset him. This friend had brought over a load of laundry to be washed several nights before the murder, which happened to be the last time Barnett had come to visit and they had an argument so he naively admitted at the inquest. When he was with her he also claimed at the inquest they would oddly spend their time together with him reading her ongoing newspaper accounts of the "Ripper" murders, in which he claimed she had a great interest. She had supposedly lost her apartment key and either had to use his when he was with her (he supposedly took it with him when he left her!) or use the landlord's master key. Supposedly she also broke a window pane to stick her arm through and unlatch the doorlock from the inside. BUT, the exterior photograph of the apartment shows no clearly discernable hole in any window pane, rather than areas of glass streaked clear of grimy dust to look through; and the door was NOT positioned close enough to reach through the corner window! A rare interior photograph made from the inner side of the bed next to the wall shows NO doorlatch on the door, which a KEY would NOT have worked for anyway since a doorlatch lock can only be unlocked by a person ALREADY WITHIN and has NO MEANS of exterior access!! So WHAT'S going on, because on the day the body was discovered police claimed they COULD NOT get in since even the landlord had NO key and they had to wait SEVERAL HOURS for an axe with which to break down the door!! Yet again, the photographs made that day show the door INTACT!! So the following questions arise: was the load of clothes found burned in the fireplace the laundry her friend had left several nights before and if so, WHY hadn't she taken it with her since she was only staying there occasionally? Was the murdered female found in the bed really Mary Kelly OR was it her friend? If so, then WHY did Barnett LIE and identify it as Kelly, claiming he could identify her "by the eyes"?! Why didn't the landlord have a master key to get in if necessary? Would Kelly REALLY have slept in an UNsecurable dwelling at night in such a dangerous neighborhood?!Did Joseph Barnett do it? If not, then WHY at the inquest did he bother to emphasize that of all men Kelly liked him "best", DESPITE their "FREQUENT" fights?? IF the corpse was Kelly, then of course WHY did Ms. Maxwell claim to have talked with her THAT morning, only an hour or so before the corpse was found? IF Mary Kelly was STILL ALIVE that morning, WHY didn't she return to her apartment to find the corpse? And IF she did, WHY didn't she report it to the landlord? If it was her dead friend, was she afraid that SHE HERSELF would be accused of the murder, OR was she afraid someone might be out to get her and mistook her friend for her so she wanted people to think she was dead and left town? Was she afraid Barnett did it after arguing with her friend and that maybe HE was the "Ripper"?? WHY was the attack so vicious? WAS the mutilation done by the murderer, OR by the "autopsy doctor" Dr. Philipps?? This is a VALID question, because the well - publicized photograph of the corpse from the outer side of the bed shows the left leg lying flat on the bed with the thigh intact and the right leg near the wall raised with the flesh of the inner side of the thigh flayed to the bone. BUT the less- publicized scene taken from next to the wall shows the right leg LOWERED out of view in the foreground, with the LEFT LEG RAISED and the inner side of THAT thigh flayed to the bone!! It can't be two different ways in both photographs made the same day, UNLESS, the mutilations were made THAT morning by THE "DOCTOR" and the other leg mutilation and repositioning were done after that scene was photographed (thus the EXCUSE of the pseudo-delay entry). The obvious question about that scenario is..... WHY?

I reckon she was only joking, or the lodging-house deputy who told the story to the press made it up. It's just the kind of "fancy that!" detail that some people like to add to their stories to make them sound more important or interesting. Besides, there was little prospect of a reward until after Eddowes was killed, so the idea that Kate said she'd come back to London to claim "the" reward doesn't seem likely. A substantial reward fund totalling £1,200 was publicised in the Pall Mall Gazette on 2nd Oct - two days too late for Eddowes - so it's interesting to note that the lodging-house deputy's "I've come to claim the reward" story only appeared in the second week of that month.

That has always intruiged me. Apparently they did find clothes burned, or partially burnt in the fireplace. My theory is that Jack was covered in blood, burned his clothes, and dressed in Mary Kelly's clothes escaped. These women did not have lavish wardrobes, at a distance clothes would be more easily identified, for example a recognisable hat. Up close would be another matter, though not impossible.

That’s not entirely true.. There are examples of serial killers who stopped killing, for various reasons.. Mostly because his exterior life had changed, often settling down with a woman and family.. I don’t think a deranged killer like Jack stopped, but not all serial killers are deranged..
@kristianfagerstrom70113 жыл бұрын
As @Jacob Jones points out, that is not entirely true. While they may (temporarily or permanently) lose the physical ability to kill through age, accidents, disease, confinement, death etc. They may also "lose" the ability to kill in the same location through volontary or involontary movement geographically, change of work, transfers etc, - (Golden state killer). And they may lose the psychological "ability" to kill via marriage, having children etc - (BTK). Serial killing in order to disguise the motive for killing the actual intended victim is often used as a plot device, but extremely rare IRL as far as I know - please educate me if I'm wrong.

I would imagine the Mary Kelly crime scene in Miller’s Court was the most shocking ever seen by those who saw it. It must have affected people for years. The mutilation seemed horrifyingly thoughtful and meticulous, not the actions of some crazed lunatic hacking away uncontrollably. Even the horrors inflicted on the other poor victims suggests to me someone who is in complete control of their actions and is familiar with anatomy. Could this fit Tumblety?
@digitalT833 жыл бұрын
Well Tumblety did have a large collection of female uterus's in his home, bit of a strange coincidence. But witness descriptions lean more towards Kosminski. If I had to take a bet it was Kosminski, DNA evidence or not

Thoughtful and meticulous ???? How do you get that ? There was blood and gore spread all over the room. Every organ was removed and spread about. Seems like the definition of crazed hacking to me.
@jellybumfruitcakes3 жыл бұрын
A witness called Hutchinson knew Mary Kelly and saw her take a man into her room and waiting for nearly an hour but then gave up. That was the last time anyone saw her. It's possible that this man was Jack and despite the fact that it would have taken 15-20 minutes to inflict the injuries...it's likely he took his time, rather than hack away with speed.
@runlarryrun773 жыл бұрын
No. People weren't so dumb then as many like to believe now. Everyone knew where babies came from, for example. That alone would have been enough knowledge for JTR to do what he did to the victims prior to Kelly. He was simply attacking the female reproductive organs. Anyone who'd seen a pregnant woman would have the knowledge they needed to carry out that kind of attack. Simply cut in & rip out whatever you find in there. That's not the work of a surgeon or doctor. Many people worked in butchery or slaughter houses back then too. That would also have given them sufficient anatomical knowledge to do what JTR did, more than sufficient in fact. As we know so little about Kosminski it's entirely possible he could have worked casually in slaughterhouses. There were several slaughterhouses in & around Whitechapel & countless butchers in the area. The fact that his occupation is frequently cited as a "barber and hairdresser" is also in a sense misleading. "Barbers" in the Victorian era didn't just cut hair. They carried out all manner of minor surgical procedures too, which would have required a rudimentary anatomical knowledge. Kosminski was most in modern terms most likely an "incel". Local women were known to have mocked him & wanted little to do with him. He attacked his own sister with a knife. His asylum records state he "had a hatred of women". In my opinion he had the means, motive & opportunity, plus he lived right in the middle of the area where the killings took place. It's not case closed exactly, but logical deduction points the finger at him more than anyone else. Tumblety was just another oddball. Yes he had a collection of uteruses, which is strange, but they were surgically removed from corpses, not cut from living victims then chucked into the gutter. There were a lot of weirdos around Whitechapel in 1888. Tumbelty was just one of many. Walter Sickert, the artist was another. It may have been him that sent at least one of the Ripper Letters. Sickert may have even known who the Ripper was, perhaps even been an accomplice, as many of his paintings seem to give clues which indicate that he had information about the murders that would not become public knowledge until years later. However it wasn't him, or Tumblety. Another thing that rules Tumblety out is the description of the man seen with one of the victims before she was killed. Mid 20's, scruffy, fair or strawberry blonde hair, short light moustache (which describes Kosminski) Tumblety was older, fatter, well dressed & had a huge moustache. It was almost certainly Kosminski. I know that's a bit dull & simplistic, but that's almost always the way in reality. The men who commit these kinds of crimes are sad, grubby little losers.
@mariuszstanisawczyk89902 жыл бұрын
@@runlarryrun77 actually i don't think that the asylum records of Kosminsky are mentioning his hatred of women. Rather that part was mentioned in one of the detectives memorandum. He was paranoid schizophrenic and still it was possible that he was JTR but he wasn't really violent . Thats why Martin Fido proposed David Cohen as more fitting subject for the JTR identity. However if we look at the stories of similar murderers as JTR: Robert Napper, Richard Chase or Ed Gein we won't find much about violence in the prison or asylum environment. In Chase case there it was observed that he was catching and consuming small animals blood - but nothing about agression towards people. We could think that Chase was even more disturbed than JTR and therefore i would suggest that its possible that caught Ripper wasn't necessarly violent in confinment. In any case David Cohen, Martin Fidos finding, was very much crazy and destructive.

I have seen it suggested that the victim was not Mary Kelly at all, but the woman who allegedly stayed there the night before. It is an idea expanded upon in the film 'From Hell' It seems odd that she just disappears if that is the case., but in 'The Five' the author touched on some very weird stuff about sex trafficking, and Mary Jane claiming to have escaped her traffickers. You could make up all manner of hypotheses on that. Throw in the Catherine Eddowes link and you could make a bestseller! It is odd that the same names, or variants keep occurring. Mary Ann, Annie Chapman, Mary Jane, Catherine using bot Mary Anne and Jane and Kelly as aliases. As someone has said here, it may be that they knew ,or knew of each other, the names were in circulation due to the murders and they were common names, but it has always struck me as a bit strange. As though there Is some hidden link that has been overlooked. Certainly, few of the players in this weird game (even witnesses) seem to be who they said they were, or claimed to be. That may not have been unusual in the environment they were living in, but to me it is most peculiar. Mary Jane for example. Was she Welsh? Irish? At one point she was even calling herself Marie Jeanette and claiming links to France! You end up thinking that these people changed their names and 'backgrounds' far more often than they changed their clothes!

My grandfather who lived near Whitechapel told me years ago that the murders were at the time 'nothing unusual' for the time and that the police Officers or Constables who investigated had absolutely no idea of the 'supposed' murderers even though these crimes occurred somewhat regularly (but not within the alleged time period) and residents were not surprised. As a twelve year old he had seen and had heard of such acts - young boys of the time were well aware of what was going on around them. There was no scare of the so called (white chapel murders) as these were commonplace in the area of the time. At the time he said there was no indication of who committed such acts, or of the other murders that occurred around the area around that time And said to me that all creeds were treated equally. Told to me in 1988 just before he died. I have no belief that he was telling the truth before he died. Is 'Jack" a fiction, I believe so.

You often get flashes of light or images “burned” into your eyes until you blink them away and it stops being there, so if you were alive in 1888 you might think the same thing. They had the right body part to be honest, the retina is why that happens, it just doesn’t keep an image there.

Has anyone ever thought about that? How was his name spelt? Could there be a connection? In addition, what came out of the victim's report to the other officer that she knew the identity of Jack the Ripper? Finally, it is really interesting that Eddowes gave an alias of a future victim (Kelly) to the pawnbroker and the police. It means that she obviously knew Mary Jane Kelly. But also, both Eddowes and Kelly were murdered. Could someone have used the name information to hunt for either woman? I'm not suggesting that the police were involved, but those things just caught my attention, especially since any hint seems useful at this point.

The murderer was, of course, the morgue attendant. Robert Mann. The photograph business is not proven and has been confused subsequently with the case of a shop burglary. The burglars closed the eyes of the murdered shop keepers as they believed the eyes held images of the last people they saw. As the burglars had closed the eyes, the police photographer took a snap of the eyes of the dead in the hope of getting fingerprints. Which they did. The same on the cash box/till.

I think the reason the police claimed to never have found the killer was because the killer was queen Victoria's son, the later king Edward VII. The police definitely knew who it was. King Edward was known to be a pervert and to have a thing for prostitutes. My theory is that he killed the women first of all for some sick perverted pleasure, but also because they knew who he was. No better place for a murderer to hide than the "royal" family... we've seen that even in recent years. But the "coincidences" mentioned in this video... very spooky!
