Although it began to suck, it's still the best era of wrestling compared to today! My father worked for WWF from 77-90 here in CT, so I was raised in it. The Monday Night Wars (with the ECW creeping up from the underground) was legendary and like any war someone had to lose. . .too bad it was us; the fans! I've tried to watch in the past few years and I just can't do it.
Nice one...I remember loving all pro wrestling back then, and earlier....There were a whole lot of bad ideas missed on here...lol. I actually knew NWA/WCW before I had found WWF. It was sad to see WWE rejects ruin that company...at one time, they had a very different style that was, in my opinion, better for years....dating back to before the Hogan Era there. Actually got to see a lot of future WWE stars coming up in their early years through the NWA....the biggest has to be Undertaker as Mean Mark Callous....if I remember right, he teamed with Dangerous Dan Spivey back then...lol

Here's some others:--The "Million Dollar Giveaway"- Bischoff spent a million dollars on signing celebrities and also did a millon dollar giveaway, where people were offered one million of Ted Turner's money if they watched WCW. Admittedly, Vince McMahon did the same stupid competiton a while later (which included him getting "Rick Rolled"). --The KISS Demon- WCW paid the rock band KISS millions to design a WCW wrestler, which turned out to be "The Demon" Dale Torborg (which was meant to be modelled on KISS guitarist, Gene Simmons). The Demon was a failure, no one cared about him, and he was off-screen soon after, with a million dollars down the drain. -Having an angle where Kevin Nash lost a retirement match to Hulk Hogan. What was dumb was how Nash was written back on-screen. Russo had taken over at this stage, andNash appeared backstage, and when interviewed, he said that the writers had "dropped the retirement storyline because it was bogus". So Nash said, on-air, that a stipulation in a match was overturned because it was a "storyline" and the new management didn't like it and threw it out. -Vince Russo apparently pitched the idea to make Tank Abbott WCW Champion.

One thing I learned from watching wrestling since 2008: If your promotion, indy or otherwise, has a boss where his first name is Vince, run and don't ever come back. Because, appariantly, that first name is a curse in the wrestling business.

Hogan/Warrior 2 was a 7 star classic. One of the most creative bookings they have done next to putting the title on Arquette. Putting the title on Arquette was PURE booking GENIUS of which was VERY underrated. It was a PERFECT way to tie in to Ready to Rumble featuring WCW. It was an opportunity to promote WCW.

Bit of a negative list for you, Simon. Have to agree, though, David Arquette _is_ an awesome dude for donating all his pay to the families of deceased or injured wrestlers. He even made a return to wrestling last year and has made an effort to be taken seriously (possibly to make up for WCW debacle), although he says he's done with deathmatches after getting a severe cut on the neck and needing surgery from a match against Nick Gage at LA Confidential. Mad respect to the guy.
@elc19605 жыл бұрын
Chucky from Child's Play cutting a promo on Rick Steiner? The whole WCW and Roos Sneakers promotional tie-in? Bret Hart feuding with Will Sasso, whom no one knew unless they watched MadTV? There are enough moments like these in WCW's history that you could have had a list as long as Gone with the Wind.

Fun fact: the David Arquette reign happened because Tony Schiavone once said, as a joke, "you know what could promote the movie? Putting the belt on Arquette!", and Russo heard him. This, the concept of TNA Lockdown and Katie Vick all prove one thing: you never, ever tell jokes like this to a promoter/head of booking. They might take you seriously.
