CB :Look at your #3... Did you mean “wearing casual SHOES” with dress pants? Lol, it’s OK... I think most people understood what you meant!♥️ When I went to my Senior Prom in the late 90’s, my very handsome and usually well dressed date was wearing black and white Vans or something similar with his TUX!!! I lived in a wayyyy South Texas beach town and he was a surfer... but when he showed up in those shoes I was SO EMBARRASSED! I was REALLY dressed up in a long tight black gown with a slit up my right leg. I also has a lot of beautiful jewelry on. He was a great guy that “all the other girls” were infatuated with but I only liked him as a guy friend, nothing more. I guess he was actually infatuated with me... I really didn’t know until he kept trying to hold my hand and kiss me, etc... I had just broken up with a guy who was 4 years older than me who was an impeccable dresser. The guy I went to prom with was a Junior... I should have known but hindsight is 20/20 right!?!? To this day my 17 year old daughter will look at that picture and ask, “what in the heck was that guy thinking????”. She used to think that back in the 90’s, it was popular for guys to wear Vans, Converse, etc. with suits and tuxedos, Lol!! Now she knows how embarrassed I was😂 I just went and had a lot of fun that night with him and my friends with their dates! He was a really cool and funny guy, I have no regrets! Now if I would go to an opera or ballet, etc. and my date wore anything but a really nice pair of (black) dress shoes (with black dress socks), I would definitely ask him to change before we went!

I agree a backpack and suit not a good look but I think it depends if the person is dressed to nines or has on a clearly dressed down sport coat or suit coat with jeans. That said, in their defense, if you carry your lunch it's hard to carry in a messenger, although I did it but had a large timbuk 2 commuter bag that size wise looked like very nice duffel.

@sweeperboy
@sweeperboy 6 жыл бұрын
Ed Jones The showering daily thing HOPEFULLY should be common sense, but excellent point about clothes should be pressed. Years ago I had a colleague who must have bought his shirts thinking they were non-iron and stuck valiantly to this principle despite evidence to the contrary. He always looked like he had just been dragged backwards through a hedge and he was in a professional job; I never saw him with an ironed shirt and even if I assume he showered regularly (perhaps a dangerous assumption?!), he never looked clean as a result of being too lazy to iron.

I can agree on most of the tips, except the one where you said that really crazy socks are overkill. I personally have been wearing Happy Socks for 2 years now, because I like vibrant, funny colours and socks are a subtle way of making my outfit unique. Also, funny socks just make me feel good about myself and also, they have become my signature thing on my uni campus. The entire campus knows me as the guy with the funny socks, and I have gotten more compliments on my socks than anything else related to my appearance. Especially from the ladies, which can never be a bad thing.

I think a parka can work with a suit provided that it's the right type of parka. If it's a conservative color (think navy, black, or charcoal, maybe a medium gray) rather than a bright or a flashy color or a mix of colors, doesn't have too many add-ons (zippers, bulky pockets, patches, etc.), and is long enough (longer than the length of a suit jacket) then it could work. Of course, I agree that this should only be worn on either the coldest of days or on days with winter weather (think snow, sleet, freezing rain, etc.) when wearing a wool overcoat wouldn't be the best option.

I like to break the dark socks rule with light coloured pants. First off, never wear white socks, no matter how formal they are. I don't wear black socks either unless my pants are black. Having said that I do wear navy socks or blue socks with light khakis but only if I am wearing a similar colour palette for my torso, for instance, a navy shirt or a blue shirt. The rule of thumb I pick is this if you have two contrasting colours in your outfit already then don't introduce a third colour palette unless it's matched with your accessories. On the flip side, if your trousers and shirt are complimentary/ neutral/ similar colour palette, then totally introduce contrast in socks and accessories. Two colours are usually safe for an outfit. If you wear a third colour, do it with your accessories. What do you say, Brock?

I think a well fitted, dark V-neck can be worn without anything under it. Particularly if you are in good shape and have a little muscle tone. The one caveat to that would be if you’ve got a tuft of chest hair hurting out the V. Whatever you wear, wear it well and with confidence.

The funky bright sock thing with a dark formal suit can be pulled off by some particularly older men sometimes here in the UK. The late, great, Sir David Frost was a prime example of this, as he always wore red socks. It just helps to liven up what can be a rather bland look with a bit of character and is a little unexpected jolt. But I would say, if you do this, go with a solid no-pattern bright colour ideally, and for the love of God nothing *actually* neon lol.

I wear preppy clothes and I avoided backpacks like the plague, because all of them just looked like I was going to gym or out camping. Then the time came that I needed a sturdy backpack to carry with me to school while on a motorcycle, and I fortunately found a super elegant and minimalist laptop backpack. It's called the Xiaomi Mi Urban Lifestyle Backpack in gray. It looks great with my outfits while keeping my laptop safe.

As a guy who commutes in bike I can say that backpacks are not great for that either, they discomfort the arms and back because they don't move, difficulting breathing and making you sweat excessively in the back and armpits. Use a messenger bag/briefcase that's attachable like a pannier for the best results. Backpacks are good for hikers, soldiers and school kids. If you can't have a rack, then a messenger bag is still much better than a backpack.

I agree Mark. I also don't wear undershirts under my sweaters, unless it's freezing and it's a crew neck. IMO an undershirt should never be visible. I equate the visible undershirt under a sweater the way I view a visible undershirt under a dress shirt (unacceptable). Also the shirt at the 7:53 mark shows just as much chest as a V-neck sweater would. Cheers. Edit: @ the 4:35 you're wearing a semi-spread or spread collar without a tie, I think this should be included in a list of things not to do. (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, as I don't have any context in regards to the picture. Maybe you were shooting a video on how to tie a necktie.) At 4:45, I think a half windsor is a better knot than a four in hand knot for a semi spread collar, it's more symmetrical, nice dimple though. In regards to watches, anything with a stainless steel band/bracelet is a sports/tool watch, regardless of cost. (Yes, I know your AP Royal Oak is expensive) Dress watches have slim cases and usually don't exceed 40mm, and a leather band. (The Cartier Tank doesn't have the most sophisticated movement, but the style and dimensions are spot on.)

I agree with most of these but differ on some of the sock rules. I think athletic socks outside of the gym are ok if you're wearing athletic-inspired casual clothing and I kind of like longer socks with shorts (I know that's a personal preference thing). I definitely don't like loud, crazy socks but I like a subtle pattern. Also, I like the contrast of dark socks with light colored pants - though white socks with dark pants are always a no. Oh, and thanks for mentioning not wearing dress shoes with certain types of jeans - I see a LOT of people doing that that think they're "dressing" up.

Sweeperboy Well said. Trends are trends. It's very important also to realize when you reach a certain age not to follow trends. What is timeless that works for you works best and at times that may run counter to current vogue. This could also mean for example the cut of jeans. Skinny is a no go after a certain point and it is difficult to see men in their forties and beyond in them.

I dislike skinny jeans and boot cuts (unless you wear cowboy boots which is why they're made). However, I do like slim cuts because I have a bit of a gut and sometimes regular fit or classic fit are way too baggy. But, full disclosure out of curiosity I purchased a pair of skinny chinos from H&M which I think are really slim. I liked the fit so bought a 2nd pair in another color.

>Button down shirt with a double-breasted suit, or a three-piece suit. >Mixing plaids & stripes. >Having your undershirt collar showing above your dress shirt or even casual shirt. >Canvas sneakers in the winter leather sneakers in the summer. >Wearing a hoodie under a suit or blazer. >Wearing a hoodie with a dress shirt or dress slacks.

After this video I will definitely follow your tips and boost my confidence. Although I can only afford clothes from second hand stores and Charity shops, I know from now on I’ll be more streetwise. I trust you and thank you !

Here’s a pet peeve of mine. It’s when guys wear a button up shirt buttoned all the way up with no tie. It’s feeling choked with no benefits.

As a lady, absolutely second the v-neck with no undershirt. That bit of chest hair sticking out is just a little gross :/

As far as wearing a parka with dress clothes...I have been in some of the coldest climates in the USA and never thought that a parka was neccesary while dressing up. If a person wears a wool overcoat, suit jacket (possibly wool as well), possibly a vest, a dress shirt, and possibly a t-shirt under that...I am very comfortable when the temperature is down to 30 below or more, when I am dressed up. I honestly wish I could dress up all the time when it gets cold out

Agree with everything apart from v neck sweater, in UK where our summers are cooler a fitted v neck sweater in a summer colour can look good if you have the physique to pull it off.

I have to disagree with the one pointing suit with parka. I love contrast in every form of art such as music, paintings, literature with clothing included. I think it is very stylish if you can pull it off. I always wear trackpants with leather jackets or denim jacket becouse i love the contrast. None of my friends like it, they hate it actually but i still wear it becouse you have to always remeber to wear for yourself and not others.

I wear Nike socks for pretty much everything, lol. I wear them with suits as well I'm a student and I dress up a lot. Top coat with sweater vest and a tie. I wear a backpack as well. Crap. Failed on the belt as well.

I don’t think dress shirts untucked looks horrible at all. I do it all the time with or without a tie but always fasten the top button on my shirt.

Thank you. 😊 I like your video. And I agree with everything on it, but every rules there is an excemption...like the backpack and the winter jacket. Specially for men working abroad, I think the winter jacket is a necessity specially if you are in a very cold country and a backpack if you are in a "shady" country.

I will admit that I am guilty of wearing dress shirts untucked. And I should probably get a more professional looking satchel as mine is looking worn to the point of "designer worn" which is not good.

I disagree with a couple points. In Canada we wear parkas over suits all the time because a peacoat just doesn't cut it. Suits with sneakers are fine granted the legs are very fitted with no break and the sneakers have a clean aesthetic such as the common projects. Dress shoes is a good way to dress up a casual evening attire. Fitted jeans with dress shirt and black sport jacket paired with black dress shoes is perfectly fine. I agree with most of your points but they are more advice than rules. Sartorial style nowadays really tend to blend formal with casual. Take a look at brands like eleventy and thome browne.

As you point out many of the rules are breakable. In my oppinion a well chosen diver’s watch can go very well with a formal attire. I own a Marcello Nettuno Tridente. Quality-wise it is comparable to a Tag Heuer Aquaracer, but it costs much less. It has a case diameter of 40 mm so it wears very well with a suit.

Enjoyed the video and the tips. Only rule I disagree with is the v-neck sweater rule. I like wearing a v-neck with a t-shirt especially in the summer and sometimes year round for really casual situations like going to the mall or quick run to the grocery.

Skinny over tailored suits seem to be the rave for young men these days. Even so with the iconic current James Bond, for whom many consider an up to date male fashion role model. Given, I wore suits in the late 1980's and early 1990's I understand the concept of [drape]. The drape of the garment actually features and demonstrates the quality of the fabric in the manner in which it performs the drape. The higher the quality of fabrics, the more exquisitely it [performs] the drape. Simply said: The way a dress pant and coat may be allowed to [fall] or drape slightly on the body without binding at the limbs and chest or cinching at the waist allows the fabric's expression and an element of understated elegance that a skinny suit will not.
