I really love this guy, how he almost poetically describes just about any subjects he had experienced while observing the true life in the Philippines, with deep admiration and respect for the people and their cultures.

You're good in observing the people & its culture. I work in BGC, so I'm familiar with the places you show. It's a safe place to work & live in. I hope you have also been to other places (Camiguin, Siargao, etc).

I've lived in the Philippines with my family for the past 6 years. We live in the boonies, so there's no expat 'culture' or community in our vicinity. I am happy here, especially having moved from the cut-throat socio-economic environment of Hong Kong. You are spot on about the Filipino need for rice. We were in Paris a few years ago and my wife was becoming increasingly agitated, angry even, because she was undergoing rice withdrawal. Luckily we found a Vietnamese restaurant in Saint Denis that served rice. I ordered her a bowl immediately before we made our dining choices. Fortunately the restaurant also served suckling pig so she got her lechon ration as well.

Mano, hand in Spanish actually evolved from the original "kissing the hand" of your elders that was practiced during the Spanish times.

I don't follow the concept of 'Filipino time', but I am early because I have to retouch my looks, wipe the sweat, fix the hair, and re-apply a cologne. hehe

Tagalog for the word "THERE" is DOON or YUN. Long time ago, we pronounce it with our lips pointing to that direction. Then we became silent and just point with our lips.

Do be in Manila for NEW YEAR’S EVE. Imagine the intensity of the electricity and vibe concentrated in New York’s Times Square… except that it covers the ENTIRE METRO MANILA AREA plus plus… all surrounding provinces …. Well probably the entire Philippines.

To have rice as part of one's meal is acceptable (just not the white rice)! On the other hand, potatoes would be my go-to side dish for starch!

It's hot and humid in the Philippines. Eating carbs or rice gives you energy all day, lip pointing it when the hand is not available or carrying something, kamayan style pre colonial filipino rarely use utensil, Mano Po is from Colonial era where giving respect to priest and elders to give us the blessing.

"You walk into a Filipino household and suddenly you are the most important guest in the world" This reminds me of an Amway presentation I went to unknowingly in the states decades ago. The difference is In the Philippine household they don't want your soul in order to sell soap.

Rice is life because Filipinos can eat only rice without viand. It's the main dish. And the close family ties. We don't want any loved ones specially the immediate family to be away. So the tendency is children can stay with their parents as long as they want. And parents stay with any of their children to take care of them when they get old.
