“The crane kick was illegal" is a pernicious Internet myth given extra credence in the CK series, when Johnny tells Daniel that the kick wasn't legal; presumably because, like many other people, the CK writers are fuzzy on the actual rules of 1980s point-karate tournaments, which were only "kind of" explained in the original KK movie. Here's the verbatim KK quote when Ali explains the rules to Daniel: "Everything above your waist is a point. You can hit the head, sternum, kidneys, ribs. Got it?" Throughout the preliminary matches shown in KK, several clean points are scored (and one match is won) by kicks to the face, reflecting the reality that face kicks were, in fact, legal techniques, and clearly establishing that they are legal in the KK universe. However, it's never explicitly stated that while kicks to the face of a standing opponent are legal, face punches aren't - which was typical of '80s point-fighting tournaments. That seemingly counter-intuitive rule existed largely to distinguish the sport of point-fighting from kickboxing. To severely confuse the issue, Johnny overtly punches Daniel in the face during their match, but the ref (Pat Johnson) calls it a "clash" and awards no point either way, which is only really explicable as a serious error on his part. Punching to the face is explicitly illegal and should have been grounds for a warning, deduction or even disqualification. The crowd boos Johnny, who follows up with the infamous elbow to the knee shot. Daniel then manages to get up and into the crane stance, lands a perfectly legal crane kick to Johnny's face and wins the tournament. This is from Reddit and I have heard the same thing. Johnny even goes so far to admit it in the series

Just letting you, I didn’t read all of that but I still know you had some reasonable evidence
@MicSec4 жыл бұрын
Another reason why punches to the head aren't legal while kicks are is that in terms of showcasing one's skill as a martial artist, punches to the head aren't technically difficult to achieve, whereas landing a kick to face demonstrates skill and technique. But kicks, if landed correctly, are way more powerful than punches and a single kick can cause real damage including concussions or skull fractures. This is why in WTF Taekwondo matches, they wear headgear, but no foot pads or gloves (and punches to the face aren't allowed as well), and in ITF Taekwondo, you can punch and kick the head, but you're wearing gloves and foot pads.

This illegal kick thing is nonsense. Johnny literally scores with a kick to the face earlier in the fight. Punching to the face is illegal, as it is in many sport karate rules. The crane kick was absolutely legal! You called Johnny's sweep illegal too. It wasnt, that's why he wasnt penalised. It was unsportsman because Daniel had injured his leg fighting Bobby earlier. That was all Kreeses plan. Karate Kid 3 even makes a whole deal of Daniel wanting to learn sweeps for the tournament. It's a disservice to the original writer Robert Kamen and fight choreographer Pat Johnson to think they put the tournament scene together so badly when its nothing short of poetry 🙂

And again, Johnny scores with a kick to the face right before Daniel does in the final. The ref mentions "illegal contact to the face" at one point which was after a punch.. some fans took that to mean all contact to the face, and a meme was born. “It’s clear neither of them have used karate in many years” Dude what. Daniel has a full on private dojo at his house, you honestly think he wasn’t still active with karate when he buys his mansion?
@midnightfury45843 жыл бұрын
He used his dojo as storage. I'm sure he stopped a long time after training Sam when she was a kid.

The only real difference I see is that Johnny at the end of karate kid was actually happy for Danny when he won in the original movie. But yet this show is built off of his resentment of Danny’s success and how that moment made him feel like a failure for the rest of his waking life. I wonder if there’s an explanation for this.
@rfe8nn2 Жыл бұрын
Yes makes perfect sense let me explain!!! 2 fathers train there son's how to fight and only one son gets proper teaching in honor. So when the fight ends with the son with a father like Miyagi wins his opponent shakes his hand and wishes him well. But after that the father of the losing fighter shuns him for losing and now he's lost and it won't be for another 34years until he finds himself again. Until then he see's the success of his opponent and becomes envious and becomes bitter of his former opponent and blames him for all his problems. All it takes for him is realization that its not his opponent he's truly mad at. Its himself and his Sensei or Father who corrupted and abused him, and abandon him after he lost. Bottom line it makes sense that we see him giving Daniel the trophy with the "Your alright Larusso" but still harbor deep resentment for 34 years. If only it wasn't for Larusso I would be still top dog and wouldn't be here a loser.

The Crane Kick was legal! What isn't legal is punching your opponent in the face. And for the record, Pat E. Johnson--a highly decorated karate/martial arts expert--choreographed both teams and would have NEVER allowed an illegal move to be glorified. Karate isn't about cheating, and to allow an illegal technique to win a tournament would have made everything Miyagi trained Daniel in, a lie and moot.

@@astrax2426 the screen time is about the same. There is more backstory for Daniel too. Next season, there is going to be huge parts of Miyagi m's backstory which is basically Daniels. You liking Johnny better doesn't mean the show is about him. The reason it is called Cobra zKai is because the opening back up of cobra kai is the catalyst of the whole show.

@@Djblois1 I mean they try to portray Johnny as more likeable and show most things from his perspective. Of course there is no clear lead. It is a show about both Daniel & Johnny. But for the first 2 seasons the writing was a bit more focused on Daniel.

There are no BLURRY lines. You are either good or bad. Sure, you can have bad days, and bad times, but at the end of the day, you DO the right thing if you are good, or you try to make up for it in the end. Johnny was bad, but he did see at the end that he was wrong and came up and gave Daniel the trophy. Johnny was bad, but saw the light and became good. Plain and simple. We all have INFLUENCES in our lives that push us one way or another, but those aren't excuses for being an evil person or on the wrong side. This narrator of course is just one of many in society who wishes to lower the bar on morality and standards, and try to get us to SEE the other side of bad people, and sympathize with them. We all have struggles, and there are times when we aren't on the right side, but if we come back to our senses, we SEE what we've done, and we don't need someone to show how we REALLY weren't bad, but rather we understand we did choose a bad path and therefore WERE NOT the good guy.

You missed on number 5. Daniel states in the trailer "To be fair, I kicked his face..." Also, in response Johnny tells Daniel "It was an illegal kick". This occurred when at the dealership the first time. Clearly he wasn't over it.

He resents his life since the events in KK1 and beginning of kk2, and always feels down on his luck. Imaging see Daniel living the perfect life, from Johnny's prospective, and your own shitty life.

No offense but you guys got your facts wrong Miyagi and Daniel opened a bonsai store together in karate kid 3 so he isn’t using bonsais for that reason he does them in honor of miyagi He is very passionate about car and karate and bonsai’s and miyagi would have 100% supported him he isn’t using his fame of the 84 tournament for clout he isn’t stuck on it he uses karate because he likes it and because miyagi and Johnny was the bully not Daniel and the crane kick wasn’t illegal back than you guys need to get your facts straight it’s sloppy and very unorganized I usually don’t mind your Channel and you guys clearly don’t like my comments because they’ve been deleted more than one but it’s annoying when people say stuff and don’t know what they’re talking about

As an adult even before the Cobra Kai show, on a rewatch of the movie I didn't think Johnny was a true bully. He was a hormone raging teenager and Daniel provoked him on a number of occasions. Soaking Johnny during the dance as an example.

Yes. And it's very clear at the end of KK1 that Johnny did not want to "sweep the leg". He even told Daniel, "You're okay, LaRusso!" after losing the tournament. Johnny is my favorite character in CK.

Misleading title as always. Cobra Kai hasn't changed anything from the original KK movie. Instead this video just basically says, "hey, so here's some other things to consider that may have going on in the background of the original story but were never really shown. And also, teenagers grow up and change as they become adults, and here's how we highlight those changes while juxtaposing it with the original content film".

Okay, so I have to speak on this because its been bugging me sense I first watch the show (which is awesome, don't get me wrong). I like the added detail of Johnny hanging on the "the kick to the face was illegal" as means for him to hold on to some shred of dignity. Its a good character beat and helps move him forward as a character. But it bugs me when videos like this pick it up and take it as fact. Allie says before the tornament that everything above the waste is a point, establishing that the legs are illegal. Go watch the tournament montage. The first guy Johnny fights: he kicks him in the face. When Daniel faces Dutch in the first round: Dutch kicks him in the face. No face kicks may be the norm in real tournaments but here they are clearly fair game.
