It’s super basic but sometimes I like turning the HUD completely off including crosshairs for extra challenge and immersion. Exploring open worlds this way is especially satisfying. You often come across things you never would have with the HUD on.

I've gotta say. Having branched out into nearly every genre of gaming has really made my experiences with new games much better. I look forward to new experiences. Especially in a setting as big and varied as a game can get. One game I can say I was very pleasantly surprised by was Deep Rock Galactic. That team has made a gem and many many more people need to be playing it.

I was more a fps player when I was a teen. I had the chance to be 13yo when Goldeneye64 and later Half-Life were released. Now I'm more a RPG and hardcore sims player, and I only play fps when it has some kind of realism (ArmA II, Sniper Elite...). I think that when we get older, we want some quieter games.

As an old gamer myself, I grew up on bad games and arcades, so I've got these covered. The chances of playing a bad game as a kid in the late 80s and early 90s was fairly high, there wasn't a million and one easy to access user reviews, every game you got you were rolling the dice and then you were stuck playing that until your parents coughed up the cash for another game in a month or two.

One of my favorite challenge runs, outside of mono-type in Pokémon, is to play Borderlands games while only using weapons (and other equipment in BL2) from a specific manufacturer. It’s a challenge run that gets better with friends as you give weapons to each other

Something I feel like you could add to this list is trying out a Randomizer (which I guess is considered a mod but I feel like it could have its own spot). If you want to get some extra mileage out of a favorite, its a good way to go. I probably have just as much time spent in Hollow Knight doing rando runs as I do the vanilla game. It easily doubled my time played. You end up trying out so many different charm combos and figuring out stuff you never knew. Castlevania SOTN is another good example. There are so many weapons in that game that are rare and quite a few can only be gotten from a single enemy that only appears on a single screen with an abysmally low drop rate. With the randomizer you can luck into pretty much any weapon in the game and see things you'd be lucky to see even with the Luck code. Plus they really test your game knowledge and it's really satisfying to figure out the puzzle they make of the game. Or you could really put your knowledge and skills to the test with something like the Super Metroid/Link to the Past Combo Randomizer that combines both games and mixes their items together.

I always appreciate developers that make their games mod-friendly. It seems like some of them try their best to make modding as difficult as possible. Others seem neutral. They don't try to stop modders but also don't try to make it easy. And then there are those that encourage modding and even provide tools to support that.
@jacobmorris16
@jacobmorris16 Жыл бұрын
TaleWorlds is great with that. Warband had so many great mods, and now that Bannerlord is out of EA, the modding community is going wild.
@alhypo
@alhypo Жыл бұрын
And game developers should appreciate modders, too. It gives them direct insight into what players dislike about their games. The most popular mods are a reflection of that. For example, one of the most annoying things in zombie/post-apocalyptic survival games is that they always make the durability of melee weapons way too low. Like you could find a pry bar or a lead pipe that will break after killing just ten or twenty zombies. Which is just so stupid. You could crack thousands of skulls with a pry bar before it even begins to show any wear. But it's fine because most of those games have a mod that increases durability. I've refunded games on Steam because of poorly balanced durability. However, if there is a mod I can apply to fix an annoying imbalance, it's very likely I will keep the game. So it's obvious to me that game developers benefit from an active modding community whether they acknowledge it or not.

I definitely want to eventually buy a VR set. My brother owns PSVR and let me try it, playing TWD Saints and Sinners. The game was awesome, even though I could only play for about 10-20 mins before feeling sick. Since I get motion sickness, VR isn't something I can just jump into for hours. But my brother told me he was the same way, but after time, playing a little longer each time, you slowly get used to it and don't feel sick. So it's definitely on my list of things I'd like to get one day.

These all seem obvious but sometimes we just need a reminder to stop and smell the roses. So thanks for this. Also to whomever edited this, I appreciate the quiet acknowledgement that GoW:Ragnarok is just an okay game and not the masterpiece that all the slobbering shills want us to think it is. I freely admit that I'm a "filthy casual" when it comes to gaming. Most of my collection is RPG's, and a I rarely play above the normal setting. Gaming is my relaxation time, and as I've gotten older, my reflexes aren't what they once were. Back in the day, I could take on some of the most challenging SNES games with skill. These days, not so much. Regardless, I have played Dark Souls and enjoyed it, and even managed to got 100% on a couple of games that require playing on the hardest difficulty to obtain. Gotta agree with Old Man Falcon here. Trying something new is often just the right kick you need.

It's probably a pipe dream, but no matter how long it takes I want to set up a video game arcade that combines the best of both worlds of the 80's and contemporary Japan. Ever since I learned that Japan's arcades still not only exist but are practically _booming,_ with original entries in existing franchises entirely based in such machines, it's made me really jealous and, admittedly, rather sombre about how we don't have that in the West despite being such a great enterprise avenue and a really fun concept for those to just hang out. Now I get there are very likely problems associated with it that are likely the cause of vidya arcades' decline - not least to mention the proliferation of home entertainment systems - but they're still such an important part of video gaming history and worth bringing back that they need to return even if I have to do it myself.

#10 was what I did the first time I played Destiny. I was never an FPS gamer and only played single player, story based games. Several months later, I formed my own clan and started playing with people I've never met in real life. 6 years later, still play online games (mostly cooperative) with the same people I met back then. It opened a new world to games that I thought I never would like.

As someone who has been a gamer since space invaders I have seen the evolution of games and enjoy playing games just for the sake of playing games. I have been paid for testing and competitive gaming but found out that those things took the fun out of gaming. To me gaming is my life and I have spent more time in the pixel world than in the real world. Everyone has a different perspective on what is a good game and how they approach gaming, personally I just play for the fun and escapism that games are really about. I currently have more games than it is possible to compete in a lifetime and being spoilt for choice is the biggest problem I face, which game will I play today and I must go back and finish all the games I have never finished. Have fun life is to short to take it seriously.

What I like is that the people who made dishonored, they know their audience they specifically put in achievements to make people like me (who plays ghost no kills) they force me to at least try a bloody as hell run. Those games including Prey, are such rich lived in worlds that you gain so much from doing everthing at least once. For instance seeing the world be affected by your choices. When I got the murder hobo ending in Dishonored, the disgust in Sam the boatman's voice kinda wounded me.

I just chose the Realistic mode and it was satisfying even though its hard but it pushed me to become more a tactician rather than to shoot enless terrorists, the game is short and it feels great to finished it in that difficulty. Now I started playing Vegas 2. And one more thing, I really like when the screen goes black when I get hit and when I die in one shot, its makes more sense than playing it in Normal mode.

Modding a game can make you love it if you hated it at first. That happened to me with Neverwinter Nights. My first impression was that the game mechanics was too complicated for such a boring story. So, I left it. Years later, I discovered modding. I downloaded a totallt different story for the game (new characters, armors and everything) and It was awesome! After finishing the mod, I decided to give the original story a try (now understanding the game mechanics) and I finally enjoyed it. I even started to like it. One time I found a mod for Jedi Outcast that was a multiplayer arena set in ancient Rome, complete with the proper wardrobe, weapons, and sound effects. That was impressive.

The theme of this list is trying new things, and that’s something I’m definitely guilty of not doing. Usually when there isn’t a new game I want to play, I tend to replay games I like and know are good. But this year, I made a rule for myself to not do that. Instead of re-playing stuff, try new games. Not “new” as in “just came out” but rather “new to me.” And let me say, I’m so glad I did this because I happened to play a game that I knew nothing about going in, but after I finished it - it instantly shot up to my top 5 games I’ve ever played. So going forward, I’m going to try keeping this same rule in the hopes that I’ll discover another great game I never would’ve played otherwise. BTW, the game I played that I fell in love with was Omori. 😍

Couldn't agree more with the multiple play styles approach 100%. Fromsoft really got it right with the whole dark souls/bloodbourne/elden ring games cause they made so many ways to both self impose challenges and discover the most ridiculous ways you could get better. So many games (even good ones) want you to use everything all at once and it can make it feel as if you have no room to reinvent or improve once it was beaten.

My problem with difficulty modes in general is that they often just slide up enemy stats or slide down player stats creating longer drawn out fights with HP sponge enemies. Personally I’m trying to play on the mode that’s been dialed in by the devs for that specific game. Every game has a mode that it was meant to be enjoyed in and that mode more often than not is normal mode. Not always, but often. So I want to experience the dev’s intended mode. Except Alien Isolation. Fuck that. I bested normal mode and I know hard or nightmare was the dialed in mode intended by the devs, AND would make sense given that we’re talking about a xenomorph on the prowl, but nope. Not doing it. I made it just past where bald tutorial dude gets bodied at the beginning, while waiting for the tram with the intense music and the terrifying suspense of waiting for that door to finally open. That was it. I don’t remember if the alien comes out there in normal, but it certainly does in hard mode. That I’ll never forget. So whatevs. Great game. But I’m a scaredy cat

I always platinum single player games because i feel that I truly accomplish everything the game has to offer by getting it. Sometimes there is more to it, but with my limited time, I feel I got my moneys worth

I got so good at fight night champion that I not only put the game on the hardest difficulty I also put the sliders up for the cpu. I maxed out its offensive and defensive awareness and turned down my counter punch window a bit. After you do that turn off the HUD as in your health and stamina and the cpu health bars, can't have you knowing how hurt you are or how low your stamina is. So to sum it up, put it on the hardest difficulty, max the cpu offensive and defensive awareness, low your counter punch window, turn off the hud. If you still have fight night champion and never tried this I advise you to, take it a step further and face Mike Tyson on this difficulty with someone in a lower weight class, my favorite warm up is Roy jones vs Mike Tyson. If you don't play to perfection you will lose. Oh and I forgot to add if you want a dark souls run of it try doing it and never even getting stunned by mike and use Joe Calzaghe, have fun with that.

In my second Fallout 4 playthrough I choose all the sarcastic dialogue options. Did not make a difference to the outcome though, but it was hilarious.

The problem with playing "shoddy" games is that, even if cheap/free, there's an investiment in TIME which you'd be better off spending playing something else. I'll watch reviews (like on this channel) to see if there's something I'm not aware of that I might find interesting.

"Well I guess I'm old" XD Having said that, I'm definitely guilty of not trying new genres. I stick to what I know and prefer, and so I tend to play only one particular game for months. But it burns me out and it makes the game boring because I've seen everything a thousand times. I went from playing CoD only, to open worlds like The Division, RDR and AssCreed, and recently I got both Dying Light games. Switching things up is definitely a game changer (pun intended) if you, like me, get stuck in a rut every so often. Now I'm super hyped for Lies of P, despite it not being the type of game I "learnt" playing games with. It's full of doom and misery, rpg-based combat and open world - and I like new things now all because I dared step outside my comfort zone years back.

Nickel Mania in South Jordan Utah is a great arcade full of new and a bunch of old arcade games. Bonus is, they only cost a nickel or two.

I got one: ACTUALLY PLAY the games in your back catalogue that you ALREADY OWN! Whether it be your steam library, digital switch games, etc. At this point, I think I need to implement a rule where if I want to buy a new game, I have to beat (or play to some satisfactory level of completion, depending on the game) a game I already own before purchasing it. I'm a sucker for a good sale, BUT, I'm even more of a sucker for not even playing them...then buying ANOTHER game on sale. I can't afford to "can't afford" to not buy them. When the satisfaction of feeling like you got a great deal becomes more satisfying than PLAYING THE GAME YOU BOUGHT...you gotta tighten up and actually justify your previous purchases before even considering making more. I used to blame my lack of hard drive space for not playing my games. In reality, I'm just an impulsive sucker who leaks money as if it didn't keep a roof over my head and food on the table. You can't eat your steam games, folks...but you can play them.

Arcades are the best. You and I must be around the same age. My buddy’s dad owned a arcade and it was the most magical thing ever. I truly miss being able to go to one! Good choice for number one!

My best memories were the times that I slowed down and just immersed in the game world. Go cut wood in skyrim. Go for a walk and just enjoy nature in horizon forbidden west. Go talk to all the npc's in a large open world. Just to understand the world better. Ignore the main mission, and side missions. Just find something to immerse into, and just do it. I did this a lot as a kid, but it's even better now that I can understand what's actually going on.

Absolutely agree with the very first point. I dont like scary/horror stuff but gave TLOU a chance cuz my friend told me to, it turned out to be my fav game ever. Then theres days gone, which i wouldve never even considered but decided to try it out and had an absolute blast playing it. Didnt play jrpgs, but thought that i should try persona 5 and damn that was fun. Obviously ill always have games i gravitate towards but its great to try out new things from time to time.

Relive some childhood games, see if it's still the same as your remember or worse or maybe even way better, I'm currently doing it with the older Pokémon games, specifically FireRed, Emerald and Platinum and I'm having a great time and reminds of when times were simpler.
